I really love how Diebuster has so many similarities with Gunbuster, but it's still very, very different. It's not a matter if it can surpass Gunbuster, it's so unique it doesn't even matter. But I liked Diebuster more.
That's true. I think by itself, Diebuster is a good OVA standalone and in a way, you could just watch this OVA without watching Gunbuster and will like it (whether it's storyline/plot, action scene/ or even fan service is up to the audience who watch it). I think fans who watch Gunbuster and then watch this sequel when it first release in Japan might be a bit disappointed as the tone of the show is much different from the original. It feel a bit on the wacky side like FLCL (not saying it's bad as I love FLCL) even though Gunbuster does have some comedy tone at the beginning of the OVA.
Still, I do love both OVA for what it try to do and would recommend to people watch if they can.
