Hideaki Anno was considered a proper staff member until late 2007 and, in words of Mr. Takeda from The Notenki Memoirs, he was finally promoted to the studio's board of directors in 2002 (long after his involvement with His and Her Circumstances). Additionally, there is also Hiroyuki Yamaga's comments (if you want to believe him) via Carl Horn about Mr. Anno wanting to tackle the production of Rebuild of Evangelion within the structure of GAiNAX at first. Most of his absence time since his last series until RoE could simply be traced to him being fed-up with some aspects of the Japanese animation industry, and patently more interested in making more progress on live-action film projects.Well my understanding was that the show was the splitting point between Old and New Gainax (not current nu-Gainax) resulting in a lot of the old guard eventually leaving to found Khara.
Well, fuck everything. Anime is cruel sometimes. The end to SukaSuka was wonderful, loved the soundtrack, amped up the emotions.
Still, fuck it all, everything SukaSucks
Anno: "I felt my career as an animation director had gone as far as it could, and decided I would like to try a new creative media. I am not complaining about the animation industry, but I felt I couldn't get any more satisfaction from making animation and I needed to try something new to stimulate my creativity. I knew Ayako Fujitani and I loved her book when I read it. So I decide to try and make it into film."
The style of Ritual is not dissimilar to your animated work?
Anno: "Yes, there is some similarity in the two, but it isn't direct copy. Though I used some special-effects, I was trying to make the images in the film look painterly. It's odd that when I used to do animation, I would try hard to realise the characters as if they were in a live-action movie, but when I did Ritual I put a lot of effort in making the image more graphic!"
Why you choose Shunji Iwai to act in the film?
Anno: "Two reasons. First, the profession of the main character in Ritual is a director, so it seemed ideal to get a "real" director to do it. Secondly, I think Shunji Iwai is really cool, so I thought he could capture the quality of the main character."
Anno: "However, if I was to speak just of anime as an artform, I believe it is rapidly declining. I find the anime of twenty or thirty years ago to be overwhelmingly better [than today's]. [...] Of course, even now, although we have skillful people, I feel we have a ways to go before we match the movement of the older anime."
What is the cause of that?
Anno: "It's a problem of the quality of the Japanese people themselves. To express it in the style of Shiba Ryotaro, the voltage of Japan is decreasing. It's not just anime; novels, films, manga, no matter the kind of culture, they are all surely declining, I believe. It's not simply a matter of the old times being good. We[, my generation,] and those after are already a "copy culture", so there's nothing else we can do. As copy piles upon copy, they quickly become distorted and diluted. [...] In this situation, things can hardly be improved. It's difficult, I think. From here, Japan will probably rapidly reach an impasse. Perhaps years from now, or perhaps longer, someone will figure out something, and perhaps things will just keep declining. In Japan as a country, culture has already become "blocked." Korea, China, and South Asia have been able to produce exemplary works, and the day may arrive when they do away with Japanese things. I believe the intention to break down this "blockage" is essential."
Another from 2001 during the release of Spirited Away:
Picked up these two Blu-rays (got Anthem for £12!)
Whenever I see a quote like this from Anno, it's difficult to reconcile with the person who made Rebuild.
Heh. Where'd ya get it?
Is Anonymous Noise a good watch?
Been out of the gane for pretty much the entirety of the season, DB Super nonwithstanding, so now I'm ready to binge.
What say you GAF? What's been the best of this season? That SukaSuka thing seems to be getting some love here.
Unless it's sarcastic love. I can never quite tell :lol

On top of the hot weather, no Owari till August. Summer sucks.
The timeline is such a mess and all those mixed moments in the timeline in Koyo really screwed things up.
SO we will or will not see what happens right after that final episode of Koyo?
Do you refer to The NGE Fan-Geeks Commentary Project? Still easily accessible:I remember an old site/forum whatever that went through the first few episodes of EVA shot by shot and that really helped me to appreciate its storyboarding and direction.
Popping in to say SukaSuka was the first anime since Clannad After Story to make me cry like a bitch at the end. "Scarborough Fair" definitely did not help.
I was not prepared for the feels from this series.
Funnily enough CEX, brand new condition as well! Who traded it in for £5? No idea, but thanks!
I enjoyed karekano but I don't think it makes the top 5 for me...
not when
Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuioku-hen (yes this is a romance series )
Ouran Koukou Host Club
Skip Beat!
School Rumble (ok this might actually be a stretch for a romance series despite all the romance in it lol)
Full Moon wo Sagashite
Nana
Hachimitsu to Clover
Kodomo no Omocha
Nodame Cantabile
Romeo x Juliet
Lovely★Complex
Ookami to Koushinryou (aka spice and wolf)
Kimi ni Todoke
Cross Game
Sakamichi no Apollon (okay more of a bromance but still)
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
Ore Monogatari!!
ReLIFE
Yuri!!! on ICE
Hana yori Dango
Fruits Basket
Tsubasa Chronicle
Paradise Kiss
Marmalade Boy
Maison Ikkoku
Oh! Edo Rocket (okay this is more of a gag than a romance but I like including it when I can because most people haven't watched this great show )
Toradora!
Kaichou wa Maid-sama!
Bakuman (again quite debatable on romance front but it is a main story to the story)
Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai
Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai
exist.
I am sure I am missing some great romance shows from my list as well.
that is also not to say that I consider all of those to be for sure better than karekano but those are the ones I saw that I had rated higher on MAL which while isn't perfect for me, is in general a good indication on how I feel about them compared to karekano. I have a feeling that if karekano got a new adaption with a proper budget that doesn't crap up the ending it would beat out some of those shows, but as it is that ending is just ugh....
again it isn't to say it is a bad show.
it's a good show and I would recommend anyone that enjoys romance anime to watch karekano, just that there are a ton of great romance shows out there lol.
If I had the time, I would seriously deconstruct that list..... No Clannad; c'mon maaaan, lol
I said I likely missed some stuff.
Clannad is not something I missed though
Clannad after story is though.
there is likely a number of shows on that list you haven't seen but would enjoy though corn lol.
It is if you like a drama filled shoujo. It's very shoujo..
Sukasuka
Grimoire of Zero
My Hero Academia S2
Sword of Oratoria
I just can't recomnend Eromanga sensei and Tsugumomo, Bastard Sensei or Armed Girl Mach without serious reservations and/or warnings.
The King's Avatar. It has different production looks than most anime, and it's all on Youtube.

I was about to say. I was about to call you out too. Good thing Cornbread is on it.

Although, as I mentioned, it lacks some specific material from the original website that was mighty interesting.
Watching Utena for the first time right now and I don't know what to think of this show right now...
It's very weird but very fun... Formulaic yet very sophisticated...
Man this director is really talented.
The funny thing is that Genshiken came out around the same time and was a somewhat realistic look at being part of a nerd club in college and how you have to grow up...
Then a decade later, Genshiken Nidaime happens and it turns into the Madarame harem show. lol
Watamote is probably the closest thing to a critique of the culture that I've seen in recent years anyway.
Sabagebu - 2
Get these girls in Spring Tiger W. Sonokawa is the perfect runt for this show.
If I had the time, I would seriously deconstruct that list..... No Clannad; c'mon maaaan, lol
Shokugeki no Soma Episode 21:
That moment Nao is speaking for all of the Erina fanboys.
My Hero Academia 22
Bakugo too OP; nerf pls.
Seriously, it's annoying that Bakugo is so detestable while at the same time being one of the most powerful of the "hero" cast, in contrast to the detestable side characters such as pervy dude who are just jokes. I'm not saying it's a bad narrative decision - it creates some interesting possibilities in a series that is very aware of public perception of heroes - but it's really frustrating to watch when he keeps winning and I keep not wanting him to.
You rang?
Death Parade - 1
I never did pick this series up and the first episode was certainly a trip back and forth over who deserved to be damned. Intriguing series, look forward to watching more.

....why?
God I loved Sabagebu.I haven't posted in awhile, felt the need to interact in SOME way.
You just picked up two very awesome shows. Enjoy!

Iron Blooded Orphans S1 Episode 21
I have never seen a show so blatantly raise so many death flags for a character. Like damn man, way to make it incredibly obvious that someone was about to die. This show does make it pretty damn easy to tell when someone is about to go. Kind of ruins any shock of it. Earlier ones still felt more impactful than this. Still really enjoying it overall and a bit upset to see the character go.
Also glad they did brought back the first ending for it
