James Franco gives a revelatory experience, just completely transformed. The girls also are surprisingly good for newcomers to such a type of movie.
Exuded that coolness like Drive, with the mostly midnight neo-noir feel. Korine's naturalistic eye of taking you to another world far from normality (Gummo) worked wonders here. The sunny and dreamy landscape of Florida is right up in your face. Ride that hedonistic neon nightmare or get the fuck off.
Sex and violence go hand in hand as they do here, exemplified by the blowjob scene. The movie's half-cocked for a while much like Drive. It carries that tension for a long time until violence occurs. Brilliant pacing and a great exercise in juxtaposition thanks to the fantastic editing.
Loved how it had two main protagonists with Selena Gomez and James Franco, how their characters had fairly similar philosophies of wanting to live in the moment forever

The Malick comparisons are apt with the spoken word-like narration, flashforwards and flashbacks, philosophising, and ethereal camera. Some of the ethereal electronic score reminded me of Solaris, and lo and behold it was the same composer (Cliff Martinez, who also did Drive).

My girlfriend wanted to see this movie so bad and i finally caved. Didn't like it. The german dub didn't help at all.

I have a US region Blu Ray player and will be in the states for all of July, so i'd like to buy it then.
Hells yeah. After being limited it's finally expanding this week. Two theaters near me playing it. Haven't decided if I'll see it tonight but definitely sometime this weekend. Been a fan since Kids (yeah I know, he only wrote that one and cameo'd, but his paws are all over it). I was too young to see it in theaters but in the later 90s it was on heavy rotation on Cinemax and I must have seen it like 10x. Ain't no getting off this Harmony train.
I went last night at 10 pm. I think I was the only person in the theater who had some idea what they were getting into. Most of my fellow theatergoers were complaining about the movie the moment the credits rolled. I fucking loved it. Can't wait to go see it again. BURR!

it's pretty great. Florescent and violent visual poem set to trap and dub. Look at my shit.
it's like, the complete opposite of thin. thin might be the only wrong description of the movie. I didn't even adore it like a lot of people but it has places to dig in on probably 20 different "big ideas" from how race works in the US to how ideas from subcultures flow into society to the healthiness of escapism.

I thought this movie was fantastic. But then again my favorites always tend towards the extremes. Not that this is TOO out there.
