FFX had the best turn based combat in the series. Go back to that and also drop the medieval settings/modern look and start using more fantasy settings with colorful characters and artstyles like older final fantasy games. They keep wanting to push realism like they did with ff15/ff16 and it's pure shit.

I'd like to see them go back to a setting reminiscent of ff9 or ffx. I wanna see weird looking costumes and designs, and see characters speak in weird languages or with weird dialog like the old days personally. FF15/FF16 had some of the most boring settings imaginable honestly in my opinion and the characters aren't memorable at all.

E33 is a great game in a lot of ways, but the way people are using it to attack Square is honestly baffling. 3m is a number that Square managed to do in 3 days on one platform at $20 more per copy (FF16)! They managed to do similar numbers with DQ3R as well. It's a world shattering success for a new IP and new small studio, but it's peanuts to them.
The Last thing Square needs is to push more into high-cost JRPGs, what they need is further diversification of output, there are a ton of genres they are leaving completely alone with zero competition, especially after they divested their western studios.

Ironically, FFIX, and FFX / FFX-2 are my favorite FF games, yet, somehow I simply love Nomura's modern settings with FF7/FF8 DNA - mix of modern, and fantasy.

It's kinda pointless because they wouldn't be satisfied with the 3m sales that Expedition 33 did unless it's a AA game with a relatively small budget.
They want mainline FF games to sell between 5m and 10m units.
The template they should follow for the future is FF7 Rebirth with less bloat.
They need to rebuild the IP popularity after years of missteps and they should stop changing genre otherwise they just lose and gain users each time with a null if not negative net effect.

I love ff7/ff8 as well and both of the settings for those games but i feel like square enix nowadays would create something like ff15/ff16 all over again if they tried going in that direction artstyle wise sadly. They simply have lost their way art direction wise with the series and i'll even say they've lost their way in terms of cutscenes and cgi, because the older games had some impressive cgi cutscenes for back in the day and i wish they'd utilize them more.

Clair Obscure was a new I.P from a new dev team and you using FF16 from a massive company and beloved series selling 3m quicker is actually less logical. Its not an attack on Square, its reality. Their last number of games have not been received well for the most part. Plus you say its peanuts to them, yet Square are notorious for always complaining about low sales, but if they sold a game for the *budget* of Clair Obscure they would be loving it. It's also not just sales, but the reviews and acclaim it got has people begging for more.
I absolutely prefer turn based for these games and I haven't played 1 single game from Square that switched from turn based to free combat that didn't feel soulless and get boring super quick.
I hope they at least keep Dragon Quest turned based, but I remember rumours on here a while back saying they wanted to try something else, but I hope not as I really enjoyed XI.

That requires more than just effort. Most games that are reviewed as one of the greatest of all time will sell a lot, regardless of gameplay type. Even expedition 33 falls far short of Baldur's Gate 3 numbers.

Weird how people are still desperate for a high quality return to PS1 era FF. Give it up. They chase trends now, they don't make them. I liked FF XV well enough but it'll never match the PS1 era.

The relevant consideration would seem to be not what Exp33 sold but what could Exp33 have sold if it had the advantage of the Final Fantasy / DQ / Square brands and decades of established global awareness.
Square has those advantages either way, the question they have to consider is whether they would be better off attaching them to a game like FF16, or a game like Exp33, or a game like FF7 Rebirth etc. It's not as simple as directly comparing the sales across those games, because they need to consider that Exp33 does not have those advantages represented in its sales, and also that Rebirth has a baked in FF7 nostalgia advantage which presumably is not going to be something they can rely on for 17, 18 etc.
I would like them to learn from the significant improvement in gameplay between Remake and Rebirth that they might be better off picking a direction and committing to it for at least a couple of games, instead of changing direction every game and just going from one first attempt to a different first attempt.

The solution to making more than 3m sales is to make a game that managed to reach the same number in a much longer time span? That makes no sense from a fiscal pov.
The biggest issue facing Square isn't that they aren't making turn-based JRPGs (in fact this past 6 months alone they have released like 3 or even more). Their issue is they are cross-cannibalizing like crazy and they don't have any games that reach audiences that are new to them, every existing FF player is already up to date on the other JRPGs that exist on the market, that audience isn't growing and Square servicing them more won't resolve that issue.
They need things in the more mainstream genres. The issue for them is games like Forspoken or Foamstars flopping means gamers are more hesitant to try any new fare from them in the coming years and they have a mountain to climb.
Me too, but I realized that I don't need Square FF to have a quality JRPG anymore, the options on the market are vast now and I'm actually drowning in quality JRPGs.

The game's banter and animations are also full on anime but is not a good fit with what we see on screen as they chase high fidelity graphics. Its jarring.

They would need something revolutionary to get a turned-based game over the 5 million sales mark at the $70 range they price their new games at.
It's not impossible: see Baldur's Gate III, but BG3 seems to be a lightning-in-a-bottle situatuon, not a game you can build a buisness plan with.
