Square Enix's tiny TGS booth... WTF?

Anyone know why Square Enix's booth is so small this year? It looks like it's less than half of last year's, possibly smaller. Lack of games? FFXII isn't even on their official exhibit list :(

I dont care how small their fucking stand is, I just want to see KH2 and FFXII and actually know when both games are going to be released!!!!
 
S-E had their own show so they are probably keeping it small at TGS...makes you wonder, was it worth doing their own show?

Damn, beat me to it.

Sega's is huge, but that has as much to do with merging with Sammy as anything.

Nice that Tecmo is right next to MS - who have a pretty damn big booth themselves.

I didn't go because I thought I could play stuff at TGS :(
 
Interesting. Their booth is oddly small this year. Significantly smaller than several other publishers out there. I wonder why.

Nintendo has never really had a prescence at TGS. They must feel that they don't need to have a prescence there.

Ah, so that's alright then (unless you go on the trade day of course).

I'm surprised that Square and MS/Tecmo have basically pretty much done a swap this year (since the Square Enix stand took up most of the space where MS/Tecmo are now last year). Then again, no DQ (or in fact "major") game to show this year because of the "party" in July. Rubbish.
 
i wonder if FFXI has been moved over to the MS booth? that would clear up some space surely?
 
Mmmm...Namco/Bandai should need 3 or 4 like that if they bring Gundam, Tales, Soul Calibur...

Very nice space for Gravity...but I only remember Ragnarok Online 2 from them...o.o

Yeah, well, now it's Square Enix, Namco Bandai, and Sega Sammy. That's six companies for the price of three!

And you know next year it'll be Square Enix Taito.

I like ESQUAT, it gives Enix the E because it's the majority owner, gives Taito the T because it's almost irrelevant for everything but bubble bobble (what else do they make?), and leaves in the SQUA in the middle, at which is the heart, fame, and probable doom of the company.

It'll be interesting if Nintendo announces and demos the Revolution and has NO show presence whatsoever. Be funny to see Iwata-san say, "and if you'll join us across the street, we have our own little Revolution gaming show you can come to and play the console at."

TGS sounds like pretty slim-pickings this year; I was considering going, but this makes me feel just fine for deciding not to.
 
Good size for the CAPCOM one...I am always amazed at how CAPCOM, being the size it is, pulls certain games that in theory need of MONSTER budgets to be done.
I hope they continue being independent for years.


BTW, Any PS3 showings ?

In 1994 (AFAIK), Nintendo started their own Japanese trade show called "Shoshinkai". It was Nintendo-exclusive, so only "Nintendo games" could be shown there.

Third parties were chomping at the bit wanting to talk about their non-Nintendo projects, but it was Nintendo's party, so they couldn't. Two years later, in 1996 (AFAIK) the Tokyo Game Show stepped up to fill the void. Since TGS was doing exactly what Shoshinkai did, but for Nintendo's competitors, Nintendo had no reason or desire to support them.

Both shows were held at roughly the same time, so Shoshinkai was for Nintendo, and TGS was for "those other guys".

In 1999, after having skipped putting on the previous year's show, Nintendo decided that the entire world was looking to Japan once a year for the show's megatons, just like Japan looked to E3 once a year, and America had become really important, so they changed the show's name to the more Western-friendly "Space World".

For 2002, Nintendo said that hosting an entire trade show was rather expensive, and that they had decided that the money would be better spent putting up game kiosks and having vans drive all over Japan with playable hardware (because hey, it's not like Nintendo has a couple billion dollars in the bank, and can afford both), so they were cancelling that year's Space World.

"Maybe next year" has been Nintendo's motto since then.

And Nintendo has been subbornly maintaining their TGS boycott during this time, for no apparent practical reason.

Since Iwata came to power, it seems as if TGS has been inviting him to make personal appearances and give speeches at TGS as a "special guest speaker". And Iwata has apparently been accepting the invitations. Probably because they're free. Actually, TGS might even be paying Iwata to make these visits.

Don't expect either... at least in any capacity more than a non-gameplay trailer.

FFCC DS might show up though, given it's expected for release fairly soon and should be one of Japan's headlining games for the Nintendo WiFi Connection.
