Star Fox Assault has a really, REALLY underrated OST.

Nintendo has a lot of classic game soundtracks, and when there's talk of the best osts in gaming, games like Mario Galaxy, Skyward Sword and Xenoblade are always at the top. However, I don't think I've ever seen Star Fox Assault's soundtrack even mentioned, and that's just a crime.

Goddamn, this game has one amazing soundtrack. I mean, listen to this shit:

If Nintendo ever decides to make a new Star Fox game, I really hope they bring back the orchestra who did Assault's ost.

Yeah the soundtrack did quite a bit to elevate what was a pretty mediocre game.

Would love to take it and apply it to a better SF title.

Amazing version of the Star Wolf theme. Loved the main menu theme too.

This OST approach and the multiplayer need to be used in any future installments.

Lol, I was going to use it in this weeks VG music quiz here on gaf, now i have to get another track...

so yeah, it's that good.

It's a bit of an underrated game in general, really. The on foot sections were sucky, but the flying/landmaster levels were great, and the whole switching between different vehicles mid-mission was a fun idea. The multiplayer was fucking awesome too.

Indeed. Star Fox Assault is criminally underrated. If the ground missions/controls were better, this could have been the best entry in the series.

Yeah, SFAssault has a very nice soundtrack, however, you can't appreciate it while playing because the sound effects drown the already muted music.

I loved Star Fox Assault when it came out. Fantastic soundtrack and fun flight missions. The only negative was the on foot levels. Not as good as the classic Star Fox and Star Fox 64, but far from being bad.

I think this is actually my 2nd favourite SF title, which is almost like damning with faint praise considering the state of the series but i'm sure the soundtrack plays a role in pushing it that high up alongside the local multiplayer.
But yes the soundtrack is very underrated, i'd say around half of it is made up of themes from SF 64 but now in glorious orchestration.

The credits theme is like a pure nostalgia grab, a combination of the SF64 mission accomplished theme (one of the best damn stage complete themes ever i'm telling you!) and the series main theme all on a grander scale.

Sargasso Hideout uses the theme from 64's Solar and Sector Y stages, the orchestration really gives it a huge leap up over the original, now much more moodier.
The same stage also plays host to that almost Spanish styled Star Wolf theme which i'm convinced everyone loves, I mean how can you not?

Other old themes that got revamped include Katina, Fortuna (now named Fichina) and Meteos off the top of my head.

Then you've got the various new stuff, i'd choose to rate...
Space Battleground: great opening stage music and it comes back later on for the orbital gate, suitably flashy and grand sounding, I was pleased as punch to see this one put in SSBB.

Sauria: Which is their fancy way of saying Dinosaur Planet which was always a bland name.
And while that one is a more classical take on things then there was the Sauria Vs stage music which went and funked things up considerably, no really listen to it.

Menu theme: Everyone knows that the way to make the process of setting up multiplayer matches better is to use catchy ear worming music.

Cheers for the thread OP, I forgot how much I liked this soundtrack and that boss music you used to kick off the thread.

So surprised to see so many people saying this game is underrated. I would have thought the general consensus was that it was a terrible game. Pleasantly surprised, I really enjoyed the game and yes the OST is awesome. Hopefully Nintendo makes good use of the IP and some good tunes on the Wii U.

Multiplayer on Star Fox Assault was easily one of my favorite experiences on the Gamecube. I absolutely loved the game and was probably one of the titles that I played the most along with Super Smash Bros. Melee.

I admit the OST is a bit too orchestral in a few songs for my tastes, but I did like the game for the most part. The land segments weren't the greatest but they weren't too bad, but the Arwing stuff is decent and fun.

This game was such a cocktease. The first level was AMAZING. I was like "oh shit, this is what I'm talkin' about!" Then the game went on and the crew left their Arwings and it was a piece of crap. The soundtrack was the only thing that kept me playing. Even still, I have a love/hate relationship with this OST. More love than hate, but...

The original music is awesome, like the Aparoid Blitz, Heroic Pursuit, and Space Battleground, "Aparoid City", etc.

I loved that Hajime Wakai got some love and many of his pieces from Starfox 64 were fully orchestrated too. He deserved it because that was one of the best soundtracks on the N64. The only problem is that the orchestra's performance on the Starfox 64 tracks vs. the original tracks were almost night and day - they messed up a few times on the 64 tracks. And they slowed down the tempo of all the Starfox 64 songs!! Why? That was so fucking annoying! Here's one of my favorite songs from Starfox 64 that also appeared in Starfox Assault. Listen to the difference in tempo. The orchestra version just loses it's excitement:

Starfox 64 "FICHINA and SECTOR Z" vs Starfox Assault "Break Through the Ice Field"

The only time this slowed tempo worked for me was with the romanticized, mariachi-esque "Star Wolf Theme", that was a nice track! It works better OUTSIDE the game than INSIDE the game though. I don't want to dogfight with Starwolf to that! I want it to be a little more intense. Like this sped up version, which is a bit more dogfight worthy!

I remember getting the game on the day of its PAL release and I personally loved it, despite the general consensus regarding it. I've always held the soundtrack in high regard, but I had forgotten quite how epic it was until I saw this thread.

The multiplayer in this game has to potential to be really fantastic for online gaming if Nintendo decides to give it another shot, which I hope they do.

The orchesteral remix of the Katina theme is mind blowing. I used to replay that level just to hear it.

Also, this game has one of the most epic first levels of all time. Where you fly through a huge armarda of exploding ships. If only the rest of the game was as good :(

Yes, Star Fox Assault had a great OST.

It also had the best multiplayer in the series and I would really love to see it make a come back in the next game (especially with online).

This game's main failing was its very weak single player, which has kind of been the focus of the series. All those diverted resources to multiplayer did make that aspect amazing but the single player was just so lackluster. It didn't help that of the few levels that are actually there only about a third of them are any good and/or fun.

I think the first encounter with Star Wolf tops the first level quite easily. Dat entrance, with the epic SW theme.

Holy Crap! This is great stuff! The music is done by Yoshie Arakawa and Yoshinori Kawamoto, so now I'm looking for more of their work.

Thanks for bringing this up OP.

Be still my heart, both of the song in Brawl (the last two in the OP) are masterful.

MobyGames says that Tomotake Ishikawa composed the game, but MG only shows SA as the only game this person worked on. O_o

No telling if it's a Namco, Nintendo (likely not), or a freelancer.

I really liked this game too (sans land sections of course -- that last one in the Aparoid homeworld was just infuriating). And the soundtrack was phenomenal. Aside from the ones mentioned here, I gotta give a shoutout to the final boss theme. Love the heroic breakdown.
