Underrated: Jesper Kyd’s work on the Borderlands 2 OST

Batman & Robin, Assassins Creed, Darksiders II, Hitman…dude has quite the resume.

I was listening to a podcast earlier and they brought up the Borderlands series and my mind got going, recalling that even though I consider the first game still the best, the OST for part 2 always stuck out in my mind.

Sounds like Massive Attack ^ 😎

Checked up on Spotify and sho nuff.

Had no idea Kyd had a part in a bunch of these songs. And they're straight 🔥 I don't remember his name ever being mentioned during release.

And this my friends, is what we call underrated

And now I feel like playing some Borderlands.

What happened with him, did he just stop doing games at some point? Or is he stuck in a specific franchise? Him stepping down from Hitman was a loss, it's one of the few weak areas of the WOA Trilogy.

Still working. Did the OST for Warhammer 40K Darktide back in 2022.

What Kyd accomplished on Genesis with Batman is pretty special. There aren't many themes from games I haven't played much in 25+ years that have stuck with me, but this one did.

His music for Borderlands 2? I would call it competent, it's ambient'ish and works with the action without being very memorable.

He's one of my favorite game composers, if not my favorite. He puts a lot of love and care and into his music. I remember reading an interview with him many years ago talking about the Assassin's Creed 2 soundtrack where he mentioned that since the game takes place in a simulation and you are reliving memories, he ran it through certain audio filters and plugins to give it a bit of glitch sound. AC2 score is the top five all time for me and I can't imagine it ever being bumped out of that position.

But yeah, he's done great work with Borderlands as well.

I just skipped through about 30 of the BL2 tracks and you'd think I played with BGM off. I recognise none of it. The tracks sound fine, just, I don't know... generic, I guess. Not memorable to me.

His name always reminds me of Jasper Carrott, so he's got that going for him.

His work on AC2 is one of the best in gaming history imho. So iconic and forever ingrained in my memory from November 2009 till now.

Had no idea he worked on BL2 or the others tbh.
