Woot! Finally, something showing this movie is real.

looks too boss to be Spock. Seems like Benedict Cumberbatch

That's the Cumberbatch, indeed.

Here's my big problem with "INTO DARKNESS." Part of why Star Trek worked as well as it did in 2009 was that it was colorful, and bright, and fun as hell. Why would you want to make it grey and grim and sullen and snarly your next trip out?

I wanted to like J.J. Abrams' Trek, but I couldn't get into it. I don't know, it didn't really do anything for me, and I wouldn't place it as one of my favorite Trek movies in the series. It felt more like a Star Wars inspired adventure movie with thinly layered science fiction elements that took a back seat to the action set pieces. I didn't care for the villain, and the plot had too many "destined to be together by fate" moments in it. I didn't hate it either, but I hope that I enjoy Abrams' second Trek outing more than his first one.

Is that London? 'The Gherkin' is on the right hand side of that cityscape. Probably just a composite futuristic cityscape though.

Maybe the reason that Cumberbatch's character hasn't been revealed yet is because he's playing future evolved Sherlock?

Loved the first one, and this is coming from someone who's never watched or had any prior knowledge of Star Trek as a series aside from obvious pop culture references. Abrams did a great job in providing a ST movie that is appealing to outsiders, however much that may upset fan boys.

Well the first film shamelessly took a beat from Batman Begins' advertising campaign and I see this film is similarly shameless. Surely such a rip off of the TDK poster is going to go over people's heads...., right?

I wonder what happened to all those people who scoffed when I said that Abrams would make Trek 2 his Dark Knight.

Of course I have zero confidence in the trifecta of scripting awfulness (Orci, Kurtzman and Lindeloff) to come up with a script that comes anywhere near TDK in terms of quality.

Hopefully they just invented a new villain even if they use elements from existing lore characters and stories.

Maybe this guy is another augmented Khan-era super human to explain his strength and threat level. That would certainly be more grounded in reality than a god-like being and it would also make him possible to defeat in a grounded way. Maybe in this alternate reality Khan doesn't survive the revival process but one of the other tyrants in his crew does and has been living in a prison for a while. That would give him a reason to "take revenge" on Starfleet.

It would allow a modern movie to put a spotlight on the moral and social issues of the genetic engineering future that we are actually getting close to now so it can be a deeper movie than just an action romp. Actually bringing up a tough issue that could face us in the near future would also make it a more "Star Trek" story since TOS used many stories to shine a spotlight on the current social issues of their era.

Of course, this idea is probably too reasonable and Star Trek for the current creative team to have actually written.

I'm surprised we still don't quite know who Benedict Cumberbatch is playing, Gary Mitchell has seemed like the obvious choice, especially with the name mentioning earlier in the year. But I still have doubts when they have done his story from start to finish in the alternate universe storyline comic run, and usually when a character is going to be used in a sequel they are off limits for other media that goes with the film like games/comics.

I'm kinda hoping that this sequel will re-introduce the Klingon's back into the Trek verse. This would technically be the era where the Klingons aren't allied with the federation yet and would still be a 'threat', and I would like to see what their redesigns would look like under Abrams direction.

The Khan villain thing has been done so many times and has never really managed to replicate the original Khan. Though this could also be a re-introduction of Khan himself, really.

Well I was also hoping for Klingons too but the villain is human so the best case scenario is an augmented human that isn't Khan (since the actor is super white and an Indian name wouldn't make much sense on him). I guess they could still make him Khan in a re-imagined way, where he is a tyrant from the Eugenics Wars who ruled Mongolia and was called "The Khan" as a nickname or something convoluted like that.

Eh, First thing I noticed was the big Star Trek symbol.

If you're in the know, then it's clear what this is, but to the general moviegoer there isn't a lot to signal this is a Star Trek movie.

Looks more like a poster for a disaster/superhero film called Into Darkness.

Boy are these dark knight references annoying. Can't wait for the next treck movie tho, was best movie for me in 09

First thing I thought of was the Borg.

Oh god I'm still a trekkie.

While a Borg movie could be good, there simply is no way for this to be a Borg movie given what we know about it. Also, JJ seems to want to stick to only things that existed in TOS.

Yeah that's true. Khan could be anything from a nickname to a self imposed title in this version. But they could also base this character on the original design for Khan as well:

From Wikipedia:

In "Space Seed" writer Carey Wilber's original plot treatment, the character of Khan was a Nordic superman named Harold Erricsen. The first draft of the script introduced the character as John Ericssen— who is revealed to be a man involved in "the First World Tyranny", named Ragnar Thorwald. The character of Thorwald was more brutal than Khan in the final version, killing guards using a phaser.[4] By the final draft, Khan is of Indian ancestry.[5]

Though Benedict Cumberbatch isn't Nordic either (as far as I know), so...

He could pass as Nordic more than he could pass as Indian. He looks pretty Nordic here.

Just hope the script and the villian this time is a bit better. That and less lens flare, I don't mind it as long it's tone down a bit.

Good point, he could definitely pull that look off. I do like how much they are keeping secret during filming. It's refreshing to not know everything about the movie before the first trailer hits.

yeah, this and this. It's nice that Abrams wants to show us his lens flare trick, but he doesn't need to fit it in every shot. And I didn't find the bruiting villain to be that interesting from the first film either :P

Official site is now up too, although it only has the poster there for now..

Trailer incoming this week? Also today Abrams and the cast are in Japan for a special press conference for the film so we may learn more tonight around 8pm about the film.

I hope all that earth destruction means another departure from the original timeline.

The timeline stuff in the first movie also means Khan can't be reimagined unless they fudge with their timeline some more. So I'm hopeful the villain is brand new.

The first trailer is supposed to come out w/ The Hobbit, and (apparently) trailers for Abrams films come out after (?) they hit theaters.

Don't like the obvious Batman-like poster either, but I hope the final product retains the spirit of the first one.

Pretty sure it's London, the London eye is in the left of the picture on the banks of the Thames if you've a high-res version of the poster.

I'm sure there will be plenty of lens flare and plot holes. It'll be fine.
