STAR TREK ONLINE: The |OT| of Going Where No Gamer Has Gone Before....

No. Nothing.

I've been playing this game since the beta. My system has not changed, at all. Background processes have not changed, nothing has.

The only thing that has changed is the game has been patched.

Oh well. I'll email Cryptic, but if they take a week to get back to me I'm done with the game. The last time I emailed them they took almost a week to get back to me, and when they did they just sent me an automated message that basically said "Did you solve your issue? If not, email us back!"

Having to reinstall to fix fatal errors and launcher crashes 3 times since Wednesday is more than enough to drive me away.

I can't believe this shit.

I reinstalled the game after that fatal error, and it seemed to fix it last night. I didn't have time to play, but the game loaded just fine.

Go to play just a minute ago and the same fatal error is back. What the fuck Cryptic. I pretty much can't play the game any more if not even a fresh reinstall will fix the issue for more than a few hours.

Im assuming you have posted on the support forums with all the necessary details, expect to hear back from them in 2 months time.

Do you change any settings ingame when it starts working?

On another point do you have an ATI graphics card?

Yeah I should change my strategy... I always want to face forward so my most powerful weapons always face target cuz my aft weapons don't do shit. And thus my forward shields weardown hella fast.
Get a bridge officer with the "emergency power to sheilds" power, and level that up as far as it will go. Couple that with shield balancing and you'll be truly surprised how much long you can live for.

With groups of ships your goal is to kill them one at a time. Every kill reduces the damage your shields take. Also, think about getting some phaser turrets rather than arrays or banks for your rear weapons.

I am currently a Lieutenant rank 5, I alternate between two dual heavy disruptors mk ii or dual phaser cannons mk ii, or bring in the torpedos or mix and match. My aft weapon is a disruptor mk ii. I am not sure what purpose the tactical console does for my weapons really...

Fore:
1x Dual Phaser Bank mk2
1x Photon Torpedo mk2
Aft:
1x Phaser Turret mk2

And you will be set. Trust me.

I have a tactical console that has quantum torpedos mkii but I don't think I can launch them yet... but then again I haven't tried. Do I actually need something specifically called Quantom Torpedo launcher?

Yeah - its like having a mine tactical console without equiping any mines - totally useless.
After the inital reaction of the game has worn off, I don't mind it - but I'm not sure this is going to hold my interest past a few months - the quests are already wearing on me pretty hard and I don't really find it much of a challenge. Doing quests solo is incredibly boring but doable, just takes forever to down the 5 groups it requires.

Ship upgrades and customisation is just ace, trying out all the different weapons and styles to them is very interesting and carries it for me.

What I sort of wish is that the bridge crews had personality and story - even if there were only 8 types of story for your bridge officers - some sort of banter etc would be really apriciated to animate them a bit.

Shitty for me to say, but as a lifer, I'm starting to get tired of the grind. :lol

These "Patrol <blah> sector" missions just take way too long and involve pretty much the same thing over and over again.

But then again, I guess I can play a few hours a week and not have to worry about "wasting money" or whatever.

Cannons aren't a good idea unless your in a mid range escort ship with other weapons as a backup, the weapons set sir fragula mentioned is pretty solid for the miranda.

I personally do the expoloration missions over the patrols as you get a much more varied type of mission, I was ghost hunting on an ice planet yesterday for example :D

I kinda know how every one feels, it's basically the same thing over and over killing hordes of enemy ships... it wears thin I am almost wanting some AWAY missions after awhile.

I'm doing it wrong I guess. I go right into the thick of battle when I should be attacking from a distance I guess diverting all power to weapons instead of shields maybe.

Let me guess, you go full impulse directly into the enemy. When you go full impulse, look at your power distribution. It shifts to 100/100 for engines, and only 5/100 for weapons/shields. After coming out of full impulse, it takes like 20 seconds to divert power back to whatever your setting is at. If you drop out of full impulse directly into battle, your damage will be lower, your shields will be weaker, and you'll die right away.

You do get away missions every now and then. They make up maybe 15% of the combat if you do Patrol (repeatable) missions or the main story Episodes.

What's silly is that even the exploration missions end up with a battle against klingons or whatever. I like the combat, but it just happens too often.

Ah yes the standard mistake, going in with 0 power in shield and weapons and you fold like a piece of paper.

My settings are as they always have been since Open Beta. I change the resolution from a fresh install, because it defaults to something low res and ugly.

No on the ATI card. I have an 8800GT.

I emailed Cryptic. I can't post a ticket through the STO website for some reason. Selecting the category does nothing in any browser I try. Like I said, I'm not expecting them to ever get back to me. They couldn't even bother to give me a human response to my first issue.

I deleted a 1734MB file that the error message says is the issue, and the patcher is re-downloading it. I'm hoping that somehow it's just my DVD that is corrupt or something. Though I don't see why it would work for a few days/hours and then go bad if that were the case.

The non-combat missions get boring fast though. It's usually running around scanning a bunch of things, or talking to a bunch of people, and then they're over.

No, I figured that part out for myself awhile back. I can clearly see full impulse overdraws power from everything to engines... I always cut power to full impulse, go on regular thrusters a short distance before firing range to recharge power to weapons to full.

Go to Social -> Grouping Options -> Allow Invite

Default is set to Open Grouping and that sometimes bugs out and causes mission difficulty to scale as if you are in a party even if you're solo. Allow Invite still lets people invite you to a party, but it assumes you are solo otherwise and there is no risk of mission scaling bugging out.

Sounds like an extremly dirty problem, the one thing that this game seems to really struggle with is the resolution, it seems to be the root cause of nearly every problem people have with the game.

My girlfriend was trying to play it on a monitor yesterday and the game refused to play and came up with some 3d graphics error, she plugged it into her HD tv and it ran with no problems what so ever, its a very oddly coded game to say the least.

Yeah, I've found that if you drop out of full impulse about 15km or so away, it gives you enough time to get most of your power back, but the leftover momentum means you don't just crawl into battle.

Same thing goes if you are about 15km away; just activate FI for a fraction of a second; you'll get like a 5 power drain on your systems that comes right back, and a boost that gets you over the distance in a few seconds.

Hmmm fascinating, I'll give that try later, thx.

Someone said that there doesn't seem to be a way to cancel your subscription at the moment. I want the option to cancel after my free 30 days, because I might need to take a break for a while, so this news is concerning.

Even if you cancel it, are you sure they would refund it or let you use it again later?

All MMOs let you come back after a break. Why wouldn't the welcome back customers?

My concern is that they might try to force me to pay for time even if I don't want to. Right now I'm not sure if I want to go past my 30 free days, but if they don't add an option to cancel your subscription before those days are over, it is essentially forcing me to buy something I don't want, which is borderline theft.

Right, so has anyone ordered from Atari's site for the digital copy? How long did it take for the activation key to be mailed?

Gotta get some Dominion action going on.

Should be instant for digital services seeing as the game is out now.

Should be:

We are pleased to confirm your order of Star Trek Online!

Please find your download links for Star Trek Online below!

Your activation code will be sent to you once your order has been cleared.

Please keep this e-mail carefully as it contains useful information about your order.

"Order has been cleared"? As someone heavily involved in eCommerce I'm baffled by how they've done this.

Im guessing they still have to charge your card then and what not.

For D2D I had to click on the download the game link to actually receive my game key, might be the same for them?

That's exactly it. They wait for your card to accept the charge before giving you access to anything. When it clears you should get a notice and the key to activate your product. You can keep an eye on it here, which might get updated before you get the mail about it clearing, in fact.

Man, this is the most fun MMO since Anarchy Online. For me, that is. Glad I choose science and the science vessel - it is a blast.

I bought the digital deluxe preorder - it took them 3 days to deliver the key :(

How much do I need to specialize further down the road? I'm a Science Officer, but as I can see, that only affects ground abilities. That means I'm pretty much free to use any ship I want. I'm wondering if I should just go the escort route for now, or stick with a Science Vessel.

It always depends where you put your skills into. I am a Lt. Commander (science) right now and pumped my skills into Science Vessel and the Starship Operation skills - I am a shield burner!

Your skills also affects your BO skills - I have a Science Lt. on my science vessel and his Lt. skill combined with my science skills will always be better compared to my tactical BO skills. Just because I can not affect him directly.

Oh no I was talking about space only here. The sensor skill for debuffing enemy ships is also only for science captains, as far as I can remeber.

bins.hogg fatal error #3

Right when I hit L. Commander, too.

Time to delete the file and download it from the patcher for the 2nd time today.

What is really strange about this file is the one that is being downloaded now is 1737MB.

The one the patcher downloaded the first time I deleted it was 1734MB.

Why the different file size?

Is it possible your hard-drive is corrupted and you've installed the game on a bad sector? Scandisk might be worth a shot if files keep corrupting on you.

The classes do mainly affect ground stuff. At least, they get unique skill trees for ground stuff. However, they also get bonus skills at certain levels for ground/space combat. In space, Tactical Officers get Attack Pattern Alpha. Science Officers get some kind of Scan, and Engineers get Rotate Shield Frequency. They all get a total of ~5 unique skills, some of which will increase in level once your character hits certain milestone ranks.

Any profession you pick can captain any type of ship, but certain skills seem to synergize with certain ships better. For example, Cruisers are tanks, and the Engineer specific space skills tend to improve survivability. Alternatively, you could be an Engineer with an Escourt, trying to offset its low survivability, but have lower DPS than a Tactical since Attack Pattern Alpha is a good offensive skill.

For your personal skills affecting ground combat skills, I believe that only affects YOUR ground combat skills, not your BOffs, so those skills are rather worthless to invest in. The only skills you have that directly affect the abilities of your BOffs are the first ones around your Captain skills, because they improve Science/Engineering/Tactical Team skills (which can be used on yourself or allies).

Has nothing to do with the game, and everything to do with poor graphics card cooling. The only thing that would make a graphics card heat up in one game more than another is if the game is using more of the graphics card power. High usage is not a bad thing.

Same thing happens to me. My GPU fan goes CRAZY.

It stays cool and quiet with Mass Effect 2, STALKER, Crysis, Age of Conan - all vastly better looking games.
