Star Wars DS Screens! AHHHH!!

evilromero said:
You can't play the Ridge Racer card in this case. At least RRDS looked like the N64 version and took advantage of the DS hardware in some way. Episode III is just a cluster fuck of shit.

Please plug back your N64 to play Ridge Racer and to discover that Ridge Racer DS look even worse than some PS1 Ridge Racer game.

you know meeting like this were going on when the DS was announced:

Team Lead:"Nintendo just announced the DS, the new gameboy."

Dev1:"It's the the third pillar!"

Team Lead's eyes flash for a moment and Dev1 is gone in a puff of smoke.

Dev2:"Did you kill him?"

Team Lead:"He wishes, i teleported him to EA's human resources inside mount doom. We have no time for PR bullshit. Cancel all gba projects and port them to the DS, this i command!!!!"

Dev2:"What about the second screen?"

Team Lead:"Toss a map on there and minigames, they love the minigames. And they will never know the difference. Now begone minion, I must take my Trouble Bubble to be detailed."

Even though the picks are fake. Those picks still make me sick. If a developer can't make a late N64 looking game on the Ds, the developer should then just make it 2d.

...haha...ha...ha...

nope. Nothing funny about this at all really.
Turns out they're real. Fucking DISGRACE.

Ubisoft have got some fucking nerve. This is a direct port of the GBA game, cheaply converted to DS taking little to no advantage of the touch screen or other DS exclusive features. All it does is add a few asstastic flying moments... -- the only way anyone can justify paying for this is if they're either totally brain dead (clinically), or if the game comes out dirt cheap when compared to real DS offerings. To single out one region, it's clear DS fans in Europe can start looking to Yoshi Touch & Go, NFSU2 and other titles in the month of May instead.

In the event that anyone at the company reads at GAF and would like to forward an internal email of some feedback, try this:

"Fuck you LucasArts/Lucas-lisencing, fuck you Ubisoft, fuck whoever else is to blame.
Where the fuck do you get the sack to palm this off onto consumers, you insultingly arrogant, degenerate low-life hacks. Despite the graphics having already been bettered by Flight of the Falcon on GBA, and the fact that looking at screens makes me want to gouge out my eyes and anally retro-ingest them, there isn't even anything to indicate the gameplay will have any other redeeming factor that makes it worthy of publishing on DS. The game looks like TOTAL shit. From the sheer amount of fucking effort being put in, I'm sure it'll play as such too."

I hope the other versions of the game bomb. There should be no silver lining that lets them get away with this shit.

Why did people think it's fake? Booker already confirmed it to be real. I guess N-fans are in denial :lol

Well this was a pretty good observation.

Thanks to someone at IGN boards for pointing this out.

Now for some further observations:

Tie Fighters don't feature in the film. Tri-Fighters do. The Millennium Falcon doesn't feature in the film. In the supposed DS shot above it says "Mustafar Balconies", yet he's clearly on a Trade Federation Ship or Star Destroyer -- probably The Invisible Hand, a ship right at the beginning of the film.

I think these are fake folks.

But now we do know these are real screens.

^ uh yeah, see the first post from me above yours. I know.

Whys that?

People are in denial cos they didn't think someone would have the balls to port a GBA game to DS like this? I know it happened with The Urbz and Tiger Woods but I thought we had passed that phase now... we certainly should have by now. Its a fucking outrage. Especially for a DS owning Star Wars fan.

I can understand the tie fighter/falcon explanation, but Booker already said it's just the GBA game with dual screens

Nope, it's not a direct port of the GBA version. The GBA version is better because of the two-player mode that lets you play new missions set during the clone wars.

GBA > DS. OH TEH NOES!!!

+1 for GBA.

Where the fuck is my hi-res PSP version, Ubi/Lucasarts you bastiches?!?!

I'd expect more of these cheapo GBA portovers, especially those based on licenses. We've already got The Urbz, Robots, Star Wars & Madagascar... I'm afraid for what THQ has planned. Thank goodness DS Splinter Cell CT is probably going to be based off the NGage version (like Asphalt GT).

In other news, I wonder if Ubi's PSP version will be another GBA port? Or will they actually fund a new console level handgame instead?

jarrod, can you confirm there even is a PSP version in the works? In the press release where they announced their titles, it only showed up as a GBA/DS version. Hmm....

Is N-Gage Splinter Cell actually decent? I know X-Men Legends turned out surprisingly well.
It's fully 3D for one, looks pretty decent. I'd expect the DS version to run faster and feature more geometry/effects.

Retail listings show a PSP list from UniSoft in the summer. UbiSoft themselves haven't said a word though... I'm a bit perplexed as to what to expect. I don't think they could get away with a GBA port on PSP but then I don't see UbiSoft investing the resources in something original on PSP either. :/

wait. So the pics are real. Nintendo seriously needs to stop being so friendly to developers in the handheld area. The Nintendo seal of quality should mean that the game is not going to suck and look like horse shit. If ubisoft is willing to release crappy ports then i only can hope that EA does indeed buy them out.

If you screw the consumers, you deserve to get screwed yourself.

Oh give me a break. No one believes the whole "SEAL OF QUALITY = GOOD GAME " crap anymore.

And the LAST thing Nintendo needs to do is to become less friendly to developers. You think that went over well for Nintendo in the NES/ SNES era? It didn't, and when the playstaion came around, companies saw the higher storage capacity, lower costs, and, in general, friendlier treatment by Sony and jumped ship.

If Nintendo tries to regulate what developerse can and can not release on the DS, they'll lose support. Just don't buy these games.

And I STILL do not understand why people are blaming NINTENDO for this. I mean, it's one thing to get angry at them for porting old NES and SNES titles to the GBA and charging 20-30 dollars a pop for them. It's another to blame Nintendo when another developer decides to port a GBA game to the DS.

Are you guys going to blame Nintendo when half-assed versions of connectivity show up in Sony's games? Probably.

Are you guys going to cheer Sony for using connectivity if they provide an experience like Pac Man Vs. , Zelda Four Swords Adventures, or FF:CC ? Probably.

Man, Ubisoft fucks up, Nintendo gets the blame.

The explosion smoke in the pix looks cel-shaded. Is NDS capable drawing cel-shaded graphics?

Any hardware that can display shaded, textured polygons can do cel-shading.

Cel-shading isn't some sort of special hardware feature. It's a simple hack.

True, but its not "simple", and it does help immensely to have some pre-programmed features for it. For example, N64 would not have been able to handle cel-shaded graphics well, if at all, wheres the DS is more than capable, without a performance decrease.

That's true.

I'm just pointing out that it really isn't something along the lines of bump mapping or texture antialiasing.

The Quake 3 engine can 100% do cel-shading without typing a single line of code, and it wasn't written with cel-shading in mind, anywhere.

I'm disappointed by Ubisoft, especially after looking at the flight mission screens (namely the millennium falcon one).

Why are they doing this to us?

Probably because Ubisoft feels that they can simply ride the hype of Revenge of the Sith with really cheap DS development kits and licenses.

I hope it backfires on them big time.

Wing Commander Prophecy on the GBA looks cleaner and better than this! Perhaps not QUITE as technically "advanced", but certainly better!

*spew*

Looks about on par with Lylat Wars. Bad idea to texture the Millennium Falcon that way though; that's just asking for people to blow up in your face. Do what you can to hide the inadequacies with style! That's what it's all about.

UbiSoft's capable of great stuff though, that's why these subpar DS ports of Star Wars or Rayman are so aggrivating. They should just let Gameloft handle all their DS games now, Asphalt Urban GT was great looking given the time constraints on it.

It's the underpowered DS, wtf do you expect? And why am I reading people mentioning cel-shading? There's no cel-shaded anything. There are, however, multiple layers of suck in every scene. Those explosions are just sprites, that's why they look like that. At least, IMO, they're sprites. I can't imagine them being anything else. PEACE.

The DS Instruction Set has hardware accelerated cell-shading fwiw. Though Ubi clearly hasn't used it here... hardware wise DS is capable of blowing away PSone but this looks like a 3DO game. :/

ugh WTF is with the Celda style explosions. It Looks so fucking out of place. Games like these are made in sweatshops. I just know it.
