In narrative films color is used to establish character and emotion. I'm not sure how 3D could serve such functions.

I see what you're saying, but it could get really interesting.

Even if, on the one hand, it's just a gimmick designed to make space battles a little more bombastic... even then, enhancing spectacle-movies will still be warmly welcomed by audiences whether we like it or not.

On the other hand it opens up a whole can of film making worms. Lighting and Focus become much more interesting. You can possibly draw attention with 3d film in interesting new ways. I think basic positioning of objects and protagonists in the z-axis could be decided meaningfully too. Combined with 3d sound (gimmick?) it could have quite an impact.

I think we're off base to assume this'll just be seen-it-all-before IMAX type stuff.

Lucas and Cameron seem to be interested to the point of pushing it as a technology, like Lucas has done with various Dolby technologies, touch-up software, special effects, DLP. They're even talking like this might end up in the home. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lucas closely working with the likes of Sony etc again. Speaking of DLP, it sounds like this is just an offshoot of the newest digital projection technology...

if we're talking a projecter that can actually project a perceptually 3d image without the need for 100 foot dome screens, or fancy glasses -- this could be fascinating stuff.

I won't deny that 3D offers great viewing potential that could make the experience at the cinema more profound. However, it is highly unlikely that we will see these benefits in mainstream cinema under the current exhibition model. The most amazing 3D technology could alter films as we know it. Yet the film industry has never been keen to use the most amazing technology, favoring instead cheaper and more practical solutions.

But I would LOVE for Smell-O-Vision to make a glorious return. :D

Star Wars in 3d??!! FUCK YOU LUCAS! Damn bastard making 3-dimension in MY favorite Movies!?? Han Solo doesn't shoot first in 3d, fucker! You won't be changing my vision. He does it on a flat gigantic screen ASS! *pushes glasses up*

There also isn't a narrative function to 3D imagery that justifies its inclusion in films.

While there are plenty of reasons one could site for 3D failing, that does not hold water imo. The amount of non-narrative elements currently included in films, that are popular I might add, should tell you so.

Such as? There is a difference between improving the technology currently in use and adopting new technology altogether. The coming of sound brought considerable changes to film form and narrative development, but the same could not be said for stereo sound or surround sound.

3D could enhance the viewing experience at the theater, but it isn't feasible for home viewing. Because the industry is so dependent on the home audience, it is unlikely that the industry would adopt technology that alienates the home audience.

I'm a little confused - you seem to be citing an obvious example I was going to use for my point. Stereo or surround sound. They aren't really doing all that much for the narrative, but HT seems to be pretty popular.

Do we know enough to say whether it can or can't be effectively used at home. Even if we can't use it at home, how does that alienate anyone? I can't have an IMAX type screen at my house - that doesn't alienate me.

Lilo and stitch? Wouldn't that look like paper mario or parappa the rapper?

as for 3D generally - I don't have a major problem with redoing movies in 3D if they give a good sense of depth.

But dedicated 3D movies are usually shit. Its like "oh look, a big stick on the ground. I'll just pick it up. Ooh, its heavy - whoops its swinging out into the audience....." - repeat to fade.
