Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Woohoo.

Ok, server is, I believe, back up. Quote this post for the connection info.

Retro, if you're reading this, update the OP for me.

As usual, do not give the server info to non-GAF, and if you'd like someone non-GAF to play on the server, shoot me a PM first and get my permission. (And if you do get permission, make sure you tell your friends not to give out the server info)

I now have to hurry to work, tweet me over at @StarboundGAF (or @HarlanRyudo) if you need anything, or look me up on Steam (Harlan Ryudo), if there's any issues. I can remote access my computer (hopefully).

Anyone found a planet with the Heck Biome? I'd love some..altars for..uh. Study. Ignore the screams from my basement. I wonder if they'll add dynamic biomes similar to Terraria into the game. I'd kind of like having some underground lovecraftian abomination grow out of the planet, similar to the tentacle monster that destroyed Earth

what the fuck is this

is the terraria dev salty over starbounds success?

I am completely stupid. Didn't realize I should be destroying those little white crate things for pixels :/

Slowly progressing. Got silver armor. Working on turning it into the race specific armor. Slowly putting the
robot together
. Coal for steel always seems to be what I have to specifically go out to hunt.

Huh, server crashed, its been a while since the last crash has happened.

If you guys notice anything odd (performance, bugs), do let me know.

Starviper has set up a server and invited GAF to play there. You can find the address by quoting the OT or this post. It's up 24/7 and inside a secured datacenter, with no bandwidth limits either.

This shall not stand! HaRyu the filthy rebels are gearing up for an uprising. Prepare yourself brothers, for today we stand for OG Starbound server...we stand for HaRyu... WE STAND FOR FREEEEEEEEEDOOOOOMMMM!!!!

huehue
Thx to both HaRyu and Starviper for running servers.

Just unlocked the 3rd sector. I feel like I am focusing too much on making the progression items though, my armor feels a little behind and my weapons way behind. I haven't even really spent much time in the second sector yet. Gonna have to just go on a couple material hunt trips.

Hey guys, how is the performance of the game now? Optimized already? And what about wipes, do I need to worry about them anymore? Thanks in advance.

I'm not as well versed as others here, but it has pretty much been promised that there will be no more character wipes. I think world wipes are still possible but unlikely.

Sometimes the server lags but infrequently. Haven't noticed anything else.

One of the Starbound designers must like Commander Keen. If anyone remembers, Fribbilus Xax is the name of the planet from "Aliens Ate My Babysitter!"

Very neat find!

That's awesome!

I want to start playing again, but I kind of want to wait until they put the new progression system into the game, as it sounds so much nicer. Maybe I'll just dabble in it a bit tonight before Cosmos comes on.

I'll just wait for the "final" version of the game. I can't enjoy unfinished products anymore (though the community is very active and I know there are mods out there, but I'd rather play the "intended" experience).

I hope I am not approaching a state of burning myself out on this before the final game. I know that according to the Q & A, the intro of the game and quests will make it feel less aimless.

I pretty much can't play the game because for some reason it still runs at ~10 frames on my PC, which makes no sense considering I play games like DayZ on it with limited issues. My far inferior 5 year old laptop even plays it at a better level than my desktop.(around 25 frames)

Please please please be soon.

Server going back up soon I assume?

Server's been up? I've havent taken it down?

Well, except today, looks like an update hit, rebooting computer, server should be back up in about 10 minutes.

For those of you who took a break from Starbound, I recommend you pick up Craft the World. It's $15 atm, http://steamcommunity.com/app/248390 and comparatively to other games it is a decent price for the content you get. I managed to do all I could on the game with around 28 hours played.

It is not Starbound level of awesomeness but it is pretty good and different enough to make the playthrough feel fresh, while at the same time similar enough that if you liked SB or Terraria you are (imo) very likely to enjoy the experience.

With that said, cant wait for SB to move on to phase 2/3 so I can get back on it!

*protip if you get Craft the World I recommend you play custom game , normal difficulty, medium or large world, high weather occurrences and dig nice, maze-ish ditches around your base to defend against invades.

I just started playing this a few days ago. Are we still unable to set a "home point" (not home planet) and be able to beam directly to it from our ship?

I haven't done much yet, but when would be a good time to start exploring other planets?

Unless a recent update broke something, you should still be able to teleport home from any where using your ships teleporter.

We are about to get a new update today. Source.

Two major things were revealed:
  • We will be able to (finally) expand our ship. Please note that I'm not sure to like the look (it's unknown if each ship will have its own evolutions - the pyramidal look is... OK, I guess, for Avians, but I'd rather not see others ships like this), but at least we will have space to customise it and to put our loots in chests inside it.
  • Better navigation screen, which will allow us to know what to expect on a planet (such as sub-biomes, weather, risk of meteor showers...). Though, I'm not quite sure this feature will be ready for the next update, since they mentioned that it was WIP.

I wonder, will this update have the new progression system too? I'm holding off playing until they re-organize the sectors into one huge galaxy and gate off the higher tier planets with tech, because I think that sounds fantastic.

I may play a bit this week just to goof around, I long to explore new planets while listening to the awesome music.

It won't. Ship upgrades and the new progression system are coming in a bigger update later on.

Not sure what the twitter is but the server is down I believe. Everything okay?

The Twitter for it is @StarboundGAF

The server is down because I was expecting the update, so I shut the server down in preparation. (Because, when the update does hit, you guys wouldn't be able to login to the server anyway until I update) The computer needed a break anyway.

As of this writing, the update hasnt kicked in (the stable one, not the unstable one). So... uhm... I dunno. I'll put the server back up for now.

I thought we were on a new universe. Shit, guess I'll log in tomorrow and see if the wife and I's tree fort / ruined keep are still in there.

I thought we reconfirmed the coordinates anyway after the universe reset?

TBH, I havent stopped by GAFWorld since the reset, but I assumed you guys were building there, because someone confirmed there's constant meteor strikes on the chosen planet in that sector.

Any idea when it is going to be released? As in: no longer beta\early access.

We're still in phase 1 of 3 of the beta. Looooooong way to go.

New Starbound Update

Shameless copy/pasting:

April 17, 2014 in News

Hi,

I’ve seen some requests for information recently and whilst that info is out there I understand that not everyone uses every medium so I’m trying to make it easier to find.

So why have the Starbound updates slowed down a bit? The reason is two fold and it certainly has nothing to do with us taking the money and running.

The first reason is relocating the team. This is a complex and time consuming process that is (thankfully) almost at an end. We hope to have the entire team over here by the end of the month. Making this work has meant going through the visa process, setting up a work space, finding a new home for each person, team members driving for days to get legal documentation. It’s been a challenge.

Some people tell us that its a waste of time and there is no benefit to working in the same office when tools exist to work remotely. These people are grossly mistaken.

Starbound is a collaborative project and its biggest time overhead right now is communication. We have a team spanning multiple timezones. There are times when the expertise or knowledge of someone that won’t be around for another 8 hours is required for another team member to continue their work. Resulting in working days lost waiting for info. Explaining complex programming or architectural issues online is tricky and takes far longer, having to share files online or rebuild your game binary just to see a suggested change because you are unable to physically see another members PC is time consuming. The list of issues working in the same office will solve is very long.

This hasn’t been an easy decision for anyone. After all these are people dedicated enough to be uprooting their entire lives to come to another country, away from family and friends. Given that Starbound is a profit share they won’t be paid any extra and moving is expensive. But they’re doing it to ensure that Starbound is the best it can be.

The other reason updates have slowed down was the community response to faster updates. People like to point out that we said we would deliver near daily small updates and have failed to do so. They do not however point out that we made the decision to go back to more substantial updates because we were criticised heavily for putting out small updates without much substance (though larger updates were ongoing behind the scenes). Critics argued passionately that updates containing one new sub biome, or new guns, or new structures, or new weather was just pointless fluff and they wanted real ‘game changing’ updates. So we listened and that’s what we went back to focusing on. We’ve been working on building a new progression system, new ship upgrade system, new navigation system, new monster and combat systems, all behind the scenes for one bigger update. Bigger updates take time. You simply can’t have it both ways. Daily updates are small because small updates are all that can be produced in a day.

Once we have the team over in the UK we will be focusing on finishing our large game changing, progression update. Whilst providing bug fixes and small changes to the existing version. As well as pushing out updates unrelated to progression such as combat changes.

I hope this gives you an idea of what’s going on.

Saw that posted this morning when I got up, but didn't think it needed to be posted on GAF since there aren't any entitled whiners who don't understand what "early access" entails here. Reddit is packed to the gills with them though, so that's as much a shot across their spoiled little bow as anything.

I asked this question quite some time ago, and I'll ask again to get an update: How is the performance? Also, can I keep my character now, or he/she will be erased again? Thanks in advance.

I'm trying to avoid official forums and reddit personally. The atmosphere is often toxic in those places. Granted, Chucklefish has a bad tendency to not respect their own deadlines and their communication policy tends to change rather often, so I can understand why some people might be upset at how Chucklefish is handling things. Sure, they are some people that are blowing things out of proportion, but I've been following the development of this game for a while, and there are some legitimate concerns to be raised.

Now, they seem to do a concrete effort in bettering themselves and gathering the team in order to work more efficiently, and I respect that and their investment in doing so. I can only hope that from now on they will be able to improve their game and slowly but surely deliver the game in the state they envisioned it in the first place.

Do people really think they took the money and ran? It's only been about a week since the last unstable update! I wonder what they'd say about Cube World.

If you're asking whether it's been improved from initial beta release, it hasn't for me. The game really slows down for me when there's any buildings with furnishings and especially NPCs. I'd guess we won't see major performance improvements until stage 2 of beta at least. Might be a while.
