Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

New stable =/= 1.0

I'd imagine there's a fair amount left to do on the overall progression front before they're going to be comfortable in saying that Starbound is "released."

Ah, my mistake. I must have misread something, I could have sworn they were considering the next stable release as 1.0.

No complaints here, I've got a Guild Wars 2 OT5 to work on in about 200p posts (and there's a big announcement tomorrow so that'll probably fly by).

Supernorn, does this mean Starbound is officially "released" and out of Beta then? Because if so... i have an Official Thread to put together pretty quickly here.

Nah Retro, this isn't 1.0 release but it's most likely very close to what 1.0 will be.

Whew man, if the update comes out next week then I'll be playing Starbound soon like a maniac on RedBull!!!

Once a new stable comes out I'll be loading this game up again.

Been so long since I played it but it's nice taking this long of a time off. Everything will feel somewhat new again.

Not 1.0 yet. There's still lots more we want to do before we reach that point. This stable update should mark a shift in development though. Now a whole bunch of system reworking and tinkering is done with this build we'll hopefully be able to do more, regular updates to stable branch, that focus intensely on specific features or goals etc.

This is going to be a real huge build, there's a few highly demanded features that we haven't talked about that might make it into this one too. If not, then likely soon after. The next update after this one is likely to be heavily based on vehicles, among other things. And the plan is to make them proper objects in the world. It's going to be really cool!

I want to ask you one thing

Monsters. Right now monsters seem really poorly characterized and randomly placed on planet. In Terraria every place has his particular monster placed who reflected the biome, i dont see this in Starbound. There is some kind of plan to change that?

Tweeted earlier today, but looks like they're gonna release one more unstable update to work out any final bugs before they release the next stable one.

With that being said, I'm PROBABLY going to put up GAF server tonight, just to see how everything works out. I've got a spare computer lying around, so I'm trying to get it to run just as a Starbound server.

Please note: this is just to stress test the actual MP connection (and to see how many people I can get at the same time). Everything will be wiped when actual stable update releases.

Excite! Can't wait to go back into the game, always did feel a tad barebones, excited to see all the changes and added content.

I'm glad they took their time to create a truly huge patch.

Edit: Also, Supernorn, just what is the deal with those dastardly Agarans?

Nice to see Chucklefish still working hard on this game. I haven't touched it since early beta release. How does the game fare compared to pre-beta visions of where it was going?

They changed up a lot of stuff. If anything hold out a bit until the next stable releases.

A lot has changed. The starting quests are different, after that it will seem similar to you but as you play you'll notice tons of stuff that have been changed / added.

Can't wait to delve into this again soon. I think I'll uninstall the unstable version tonight and reinstall the normal version so I'm ready when the stable update hits.

Where can I read the release notes for the new unstable update?

I think the new unstable update went up about 10 minutes ago? Steam is telling me that my Starbound game it just auto-updated around 9:17pm.

I'll try and look for some release notes... unless Supernorn pops up and provides them first or something... :p

I opened Steam and it start downloading the update. I did search for the release notes on CF forums and on Steam Community and U had no luck finding, anyway I can wait because I need to sleep.

what exactly did today's unstable change?

Essentially, everything that they've added during the nightlies since the last unstable was suppose to be in. And apparently some other stuff they didn't talk about.

Yeaaah... sorry, that's really vague, but the good news is that the actual stable update is suppose to be this week, so just hold out till then. I'm sure they'll post release notes when that one hits.

I have a Starbound server running -- if the Stable has been updated already, I am then running the current stable with all the new stuff.

From the looks of it the actual stable update will be later today, i'll keep an eye on it and will update when it's available.

Hide that info, quick.

Based on the tweets, I'm going to assume the new stable hits at the same time when the game is discounted today, so essentially when Steam updates its store page, which is around 1pm EST (another 3 hours)

Wow, so today's the day, eh? Sooner than I expected. Welp, I guess I know what I'll be playing tonight!

And for the next few weeks....

Here's the new server info for GAF server. The info listed in the OP is out of date, and won't work. (Quote to see)

While this is the info, the actual server wont be up until later. I'll make another post when its actually up.

Also, they must be doing some last minute changes, because it looks like they also updated the unstable branch earlier today.

WOO!

Can't wait for everyone to start playing!
You and the rest of Chucklefish are welcome to stop by the server anytime.

So should I opt out of the unstable build?
You'll need to, in order to get back on the stable build.

so i just opted out of my unstable build. is there save compatibility?
No, stable and unstable saves are considered two different things. They made it that way so people wouldn't complain if they wanted to mess with the unstable/nightly builds.

Played like 7-8 hours of the game during the initial release, liked what was there but decided to hold back until it was closer to release. Think this is gonna pull me back in, I can't wait to see all the changes.

If it's up by the time I get on tonight, I'll be playing on the Gaf server!

The wait for the update is so painful! I keep alttabbing out of FFXIV every 2-3 minutes just to check if Steam's downloading the update.

With the newest stable update coming out today, is now a good time to jump into this game for the first time? And is there anything a complete newbie like me should know before playing?

You can make picks that destroy blocks faster than your Matter Manipulator but they don't last long. You can also upgrade the MM in your ship, to make it stronger, capable to absorb liquids and destroy more blocks.

So I should focus on upgrading the MM instead of relying on picks (or at least only rely on picks early on)?

HYPE for stable update. I haven't tried any of the nightly builds, so this is going to be a whole new ballpark for me.

I put about 40-50 hours in already, gotten to the final tier worlds and stuff, but apart from building epic bases on planets, I've been really gagging for new content. Can't wait.

Sorry about the wait guys! it's just hit midnight and people are still in the office working hard to fix the steam issues. Should have it up soon hopefully!
