Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Of all the games of this nature, this is the first I've truly enjoyed. Couldn't get into Terraria or Minecraft or any of the other peers but this one is doing it pretty well for me, curious to see where it goes.

One thing that I'd like to see, dont know where (or if?) its present on the road map is that its too easy to bowl over peaceful villages. They don't currently defend themselves at all unless they're hostile. It's hard to resist all that free loot, though...

There is some character progression, in that the schematics you learn will disappear. Although most of them are kind of useless it still sucks to see them gone.

Farewell Sam Fisher, I hardly knew ye.

Saw this on the Steam discussions, reposted from the Starbound forums. In response to all the ridiculous trolls:

Why Starbound is a blatant rip off of Terraria
1. They both have the letters "r" and "a" in their names. - KirasiN
2. They both are 2D.
3. They both have grass.
4. There are humans in both games and you have to be a human to play both games. - Angry Muffin
5. Terraria has fallen stars. Star is in the name of Starbound. Coincidence? I think not.
6. Terraria does have zombies whereas Starbound doesn't ! This is a trick to make us think it is not a ripoff! - Klemar
7. They both have rocks. - Creepwolf
8. They both have spears, guns, and swords. The only shields in Terraria are passive, which is to make us think it's not a ripoff. - The Demon Of Borders
9. In both games you can chop down trees with a chainsaw. - Star and Moon
10. Both games have fish. Starbound has more fish though, meaning it rips it off more then once! - The Demon Of Borders
11. HOW CAN THERE BE MORE THAN ONE COMPUTER GAME AND ONE 2D GAME IN THE ENTIRE WORLD! AND HOW DARE OTHER GAMES USE GRASS, ITS OUTRAGEOUS I TELL YOU! AND NO OTHER GAME IN HISTORY HAS HAD AN R IN ITS NAME BEFORE LIKE DOUBLEYOUTEEEFF! I SUGGEST WE FIND EVERY OTHER GAME OUT THERE THAT MATCHES THESE DESCRIPTIONS AND BURN 'EM, SMASH 'EM, STOP 'EM WHATEVER! THIS IS MAKING ME RAGE ON SO MANY LEVELS IT'S NOT EVEN FUNNY! ARGH SERIOUSLY LET'S SUE ALL GAMING COMPANIES FOR PLAGIARISM OR SOMETHING - Crazy Lady
12. Starbound will come out after Terraria. Coincidence?
13. The artist from Starbound even copied the artist from Terraria's name and life!
14. Have you ever seen Terraria and Starbound in the same room?
15. Both games ripped off another game! (Terraria=Minecraft). As if there wasn't enough scum and deceivery, now they're stealing stealing too!
16. They both ripped off Hello Kitty because of the cats. - Suika Ibuki who is awesome for his/her name
17. They both ripped off Super Mario with the jumping system.
18. Both games were made entirely by people from planet Earth.

A friend of mine told of this..unbelievable...i am stunned how many trolls are doing stupid shit like this.

Finally got to pick this up and download it. It's 4:30 in the morning and I'm launching it for the first time which is probably the stupidest thing I could do since it means I won't be sleeping at all but there's just too many planets that need exploring...

me and Gon, (whoever that was) had a nice long exploration, through slimy caves, poison, enemies falling from the sky, ripoff Frog Merchants, to icy pockets inside the lava core, all the way to the glitchy bottom of the map, stuck for eternity (or until save and quit)

Good. This was terrible at allowing me to study peacefully. A wipe will allow me to finish up my exams and not obsess over beating that damn UFO boss.

I will start fresh later!

Where the fuck is iron ore? I've been looking all over the first planet and can't find any! Is it only in certain areas?

If you're playing on the gaf server then the initial planet has probably been strip mined completely. Otherwise I don't see why it should be hard to find.

Lol even if it was, Terraria is basically Minecraft translated Minecraft into 2D so there's that...
I see it's on point 15 and with point 15 all other points do not really matter.

That's just stupid, why put you on a planet with no iron at the start?
They might have made it too random, but as mentioned, you can use
coal or wood
to get to another planet.

There are a lot of balance changes they are quickly testing. They already did things like making bandages easier to craft, so who knows what sort of easier or more difficult things will get adjusted by the time a few months have gone by. :) Along the way, there will probably be some silly things though.

I thought you were stuck on the planet...!

Nope. Spaceship spoilers:

You can use coal or wood if you find either (cut down trees for wood and use the raw logs) to fuel your spaceship. I think it takes 1000 units to fly to a destination planet. I didn't play around with it much, but I -think- it may take 1000 units no matter how far away the destination is.

Be careful since you may lose your home planet, if you wanted to find it again. You can write down coordinates, or use the mark home planet thing on the map.

If I recall correctly right clicking the map in the spaceship navigation screen will show you a LOT of planets you can visit. Be very careful to zoom in and look at the warning level before you fly, since some of them may be very high level, and you probably want to stick to level 1 or 2 planets or everything will kill you, haha.

Really enjoying this game, filling that minecraft itch that I have had for a while. Sucks about the character wipe though. Here's my grave yard ship.

The furthest away I've traveled took me more than 200 units of fuel, but never 1000. Click on the planet you want to travel to and the fuel gauge will show a section in green. That green amount is the fuel you'll have used up if you do go.

That's really cool!

Speaking of cool things, I hunted down some procedurally generated monstrosity and it dropped a fancy sword that fires bubbly projectiles (crap damage, but it's fun to murder stuff using bubbles). This game keeps surprising.

Okay, just to be clear - if I stash EVERYTHING on my starting planet, it will still be there after the character swipe? And the base I've been building on another planet will also still be there?

Or is this like a hard reset - gg and start over?

That is really hard to know, considering there will be an ore rebalance.

Yeah. We don't actually know for sure that if you stash stuff on your planet (remember ALL the info for your planet by the way. The full name and coordinates. Coordinates can be negative or positive!) that things will actually be there after the update. Stash some of your more important things if you want, and assume they'll be gone unless we get clarification.

Edit: I think I'm going to disregard all my old stuff anyway just to get a fresh take on how the beginning of the game works out with these changes. I have been trying to find out how to mod the matter manipulator to be less shit though in the meantime. Maybe keep the slow mining speed, but make it mine 4x4 blocks - but I can't actually find the item in the assets folder.

Edit again: Someone over on the official forums has already released a working cat-people mod. Not something I'd be into having, but it's really cool that people are already making a new working race.

Edit yet again: And a mod for new matter manipulators instead of pickaxes. I'd guess you can't use this stuff on a server unless the server and everyone else on it has the same mods, but this is still really cool. Also, I learned that the matter manipulator is probably called the beamaxe in the item files. Gonna try to make a quick, ridiculous mining speed and huge radius mod just for fun.

thats pretty cool but for some reason i can never get into mods i always like playing the game as it was intended unelss of course the mod fixes stuff then im cool with that

This was before the last patch, but I've noticed that regarding fuel, it takes 1 unit to move between a planet and its moon (still goes through the entire FTL cutscene unfortunately, probably to mask loading/generation), 100 between planets in the same star system, and 200+ to travel between star systems. Maybe even more for different sectors, but I haven't gotten very far with the impending character wipe coming soon.

I haven't tried it, but is coal more efficient for fueling the ship? Wood is usually plentiful and gives 1:1 unit of ship fuel, coal is harder to come by and has other uses, can't really see a reason to use coal as ship fuel unless I absolutely had to.

Coal gives 2 fuel per 1, but I've always used unrefined wood for fuel, since that way I can use coal for everything else, and wood is easy enough to get that I can just burn that when I go exploring new planets.

Yeah, I can understand that. Not every mod is good for the game how we as individuals want to play it, but I'm glad stuff is already getting made. Options are always nice to have, and it helps show the potential this game has for the future.

I may have gone too far with this. Also has the side-effect of showing the blocks/ores through the ground as you highlight it while aiming.
Aiming at trees requires holding shift, the radius is so big. Radius is 10 now in this dumb, quick mod, instead of 2.
Hey, why is the world all blue? I didn't change that.
Oh, right, because that's the highlight of what the matter manipulator is pointed at. For science! This is at 100, by the way.
And then I died along with all the blocks. My computer almost died with me. Fun stuff.

I use all my coal for fuel, what else can you do with it besides making camp fires/torches?
You also use it to make steel out of iron and coal. It's probably used in the future too, as a similar process.

Glad they're changing the damage/level system, it was way too binary.
Agreed. It became a lot of getting one-shot or one-shotting everything you see. I'd like combat to have some actual length to it. Feel like more of an activity. It'd also be nice to feel more powerful when going back to a previous sector, but not completely outclassing everything you encounter.
