Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

The more I think about it the more I think the fact that the universe shares the same seed for every game and every server is a bad idea, knowing the places where finding tech/shops/buildings etc... is guaranteed will be a bad thing in the long run as players will be decrypting everything and building databases of all the planets and possible locations of interest ... even with billions of them, it will just end up killing the discovery feel.

As much as I want to make an awesome house, the fact that progression means leaving your house and moving to another sector puts that idea on ice, unless I want to constantly shuttle back and forth from my home planet and the frontier. If only your character's ship was a little roomier. :/

They actually announced ship upgrades in the blog. I can't find the post, but the image is the one in the wiki page.

Has anyone found anything cool underground? The only thing I've found is a
sewage plant
. Is there more out there?

I found some sort of miniature village, with waist-high houses and streetlamps. They were just money containers, you could destroy them for pixels (but what kind of monster would do that?). As a bonus, I think it was in one of the GAF system moons.

Are you using Maestro or the LOTRO player? I tried converting some .midis to .abc with Maestro and, while they sound fine in the program, they play like crap in Starbound. :/

I'm not converting any midis, but a lot of the .abc's I've found, good ones even, seem to be converted via the LOTRO player (says so in their description). I'm using the LOTRO player for previews, and mostly they sound the same; I filtered the bad ones out and ended up with a list of 10+ good ones once, and every single one played fine in-game.

And now I can't figure out how to cook food with a campfire.

Interact with it (middle click or E).

I'm having serious trouble finding craftable items that I don't have the materials for. Unchecking the materials box doesn't seem to be helping.

You have two inventories; one is a backpack icon that weapons, food, etc. goes into, and the second is a little dirt icon that automatically sorts materials.

I'm hoping they add more of those too, maybe a furniture one or something.

I'm having trouble enjoying Starbound and I'm hoping you guys can provide some advice.

I enjoyed Terraria immensely (171 hours) and Minecraft before that. I enjoy games with similar fighting mechanics (Rogue Legacy, Spelunky, etc) and I enjoy games where you dig for resources and greater challenges (Dwarf Fortress, A Game of Dwarves, Gnomoria).

I'm struggling to enjoy Starbound, though, because I feel like there isn't anything to do that's worthwhile doing. I feel like Starbound is Spore's space mode.

I dug down to the magma core of my starting world with almost no challenge. I then went to another planet and did the same. Again, no challenge.

I spent an hour searching for more difficult planets with no luck. Every system I clicked on had a max difficulty level of 10.

I went exploring on a few planets for surface bases and while I found several, they didn't really do anything but provide me with mountains of pointless stuff to hold onto in case I decide to use it for my own dwelling.

I checked merchants at whatever bases I found, but there was no point. I know I'd have to search for countless dozens of hours to find a decent weapons vendor (with no guarantee of success), or I could spend 30 seconds looking up the coordinates for a top level pirates base and get the best gun that way with zero challenge.

And then what? Now I've got an awesome gun - what am I supposed to do with it? I've got a big gun, a homeworld with chests full of junk, and absolutely nothing to do.

You must still be in Alpha sector if you only see planets up to lv 10. Do some of the quests and find your way to Beta and onwards.

From Twitter:

Yeah but if you read the thread, apparently it'll cost 40% of pixels during the conversion and they're going to increase the pixel loss on death back to 30%. I don't really know how I feel about it but I feel like the penalty for both storage and dying is still too harsh.

I would feel ok with 20-25% for storage and 30% for death. Otherwise you just go prancing around without any repercussions if you die and then it would feel too close to terraria to me.

Well, hopefully the death penalty being back at 30% will make more sense, now that enemies hopefully won't be one-shotting you thanks to armor rating issues.

With 20% penalty: i felt myself being more reckless and taking chances. Dying wasn't a disappointment but rather an inconvenience. With a 30% penalty, I felt the sadness of dying and making mistakes was costly.

They also had adjusted the prices of beginner things making it easier to obtain starter stuff. This is one of those issues that they addressed too quickly too fast. The combination of all the fixes made it too easy. Glad to see one of the changes reverted.

So if you had 1000 pixels and banked them at 40% cost you would end up with 600. If you had 1000 pixels and died once at 30% cost you would have 700, die again and you have 490.

Many of the posts here mention dying a lot, so for many players, especially me, it's more efficient to bank them.

I'd feel like 10-15% for storage and 20-25% on death would be better. Losing a third or more of your pixels really sucks and does not make the game any more fun for me. I understand there should be a penalty for death but there's no easy way to return to your ship without dying if you're particularly far away.

At least the game seems fairly easy to mod, so I'd be more inclined to tweak the penalties to something more sensible.

I think he just meant the mechanic involved, turning pixels into an item that can then be deposited somewhere safe. The associated fees and penalties may be wildly different.

Nevermind, didn't scroll down to see Tiy had actually posted in that thread.

That's awes...

Oh. Can only hope it'll get adjusted down since this is beta.

I dunno, Tiy mentions in the thread that the fee has to be higher than dying because you can die more than once. You're basically giving up 40% of your pixels to guarantee the remaining 60% are safe forever, whereas not banking them means eventually you'll run into an enemy, miss a jump or do something else to get killed and lose a lot more than 40% (in fact, two deaths is already 41%).

I'm grinding leather to make the snow armor. It gives better stats than the silver armor and is warmer.

Yes that is my end goal too. But the snow armor doesn't show up, and I don't seem to have the crafting station for leather available. What is it? Do I only get to work with leather after alpha sector?

The leather should be an enhancement to existing armor. i.e. you can take your copper armor and apply a leather patch. This will add "+1 cold protection" to your copper armor piece without altering its other stats. This way it can provide cold protection at lower levels without creating an overpowered or a weak armor set.

Well, now that I've put some time into it I'll agree there's some things Starbound does better than Terraria but there's an awful lot lacking that Terraria had some time ago. While I understand it's beta, there's still quite a bit Terraria had in its early time period that Starbound does not.

Things like no directional attacks in weapons like spears, the sense of exploring and finding cool items like the Cloud in a Bottle. The emphasis is definitely more on the crafting side, which isn't a bad thing, just makes it a different game (Which is good I guess if that's your thing). The adventure portion isn't quite as high as in Terraria though, IMO. I've dug through various planets for hours with my wife and there's no chests with cool loot, just the equivalent of brown chests in the upper layers in Terraria. Some ore, some pixels, maybe a stimpak.

There's none of those special nifty items that make your character more unique. There's techs, sure, but I've only found pulse jump so far. The only *unique* items I've found are weapons from mini-bosses or in outposts, but those usually have terrible armor penetration and don't compare to craftable weapons even with their procs. I haven't had as much time to play it as some since work and all, but from what bit I put in during the week and this weekend the adventure side of things is lacking. Again, not saying that's bad, just more the type of thing I was wanting.

The mini-biomes within planets are cool, but I haven't seen really any of the underground mini-biomes (guessing those aren't added yet?) By that I mean ones not connected to the top layer, but underground completely.

There's some cool ones, like a sewer with poop golems/mini poos (yes, really) but with no unique item that you can loot there it feels kind of hollow to me. I mean there's some cool items you can grab from there and build into an area you'd make, and I could see someone make some Super Mario type planet with the pipe structures, but I really wish there would be more unique items other than vanity that are available in these areas. I feel it would make them more desirable.

The ABC music thing is cool, but I've only found a (Female) microphone so far. I hope these are craftable at some point in the game.

It's a solid game with a lot of potential, albeit its focus is definitely different than Terraria, but there's a long way to go. Starbound definitely does not feel very Metroidvania, for better or worse, depending on your personal tastes.

All in all I guess that's good, as that means Starbond and Terraria 2 can coexist in peace. Nothing wrong with genre diversity.
