StarCraft: Ghost for GameCube cancelled

Call me crazy, but how does the PS2 have any more of an online structure than the GameCube?

I don't know, with millions of network adapters packed in with old model PS2s, and millions more built into the new model... that could be a start. And an online portfolio consisting of more than Phantasy Star, that might also be worth something.

And that's really the crux of it. Up until recently, Nintendo had an official online policy that basically mirrored Sony's. That is, "Do what you want, we don't care." The critical difference was that Nintendo didn't make the network adapter available en masse, nor did they make any effort to support the device with ready-made network code for developers. The few that did use it had to go out on their own until Nintendo made that token deal with Gamespy.

Things will likely be different for cross-platform online games now that NWC exists.

I just never understood why the PS2 would get networked games and not the Cube if they both had online adapters back then.

Nintendo wasn't serious about online gaming. I remember interviewing NoCanada's pres and his voice changed when we hit that topic. They simply didn't care for it.

Imagine you're a developer. Nintendo's adapter is pretty much only available online through Nintendo.com, meanwhile you're tripping over the Sony counterpart in nearly every store that stocks PS2 accessories.

Ask yourself: Which company is taking online gaming more seriously?

Sony have made a ton of online games themselves for starters. How can 3rd parties believe in it when Nintendo didn't even?

That actually matters less. All Nintendo had to do was make it available and give developers support for the device. With that approach, at the very least a non-Nintendo online game could've been the next must-have title.

No, let me rephrase: At the very least, developers wouldn't scrap GCN projects because of the missing online component, which might be core to the game. Such is the case with Ghost.

Nintendo made this bed, they're sleeping in it. However, they seemed to have learned their lesson.

I had no idea Ghost was going to be so online dependent. I thought it was just an actiony version of MGS. I hope not having a modem for the PS2 wont force me to miss the game.

The plot they have written for this game is really deep(they said so themselves). Like all Blizzard games it will be a blast both in singleplayer and multiplayer.

And I need to say it again: ZERG in multiplayer. :D

Its too bad, but if the Xbox version is backward compatible with the 360 I'll play it there.

It was envisioned on the current gen and Blizzard isn't made of money.

Have you seen the last subscriber tally for WoW? They're not going to have to break into their piggy banks to finish the game, no matter where it goes.

wishful thinking, i think this game has been moved to next gen, if they were smart, they better, casue i lost interesting in this over the many delays the game has received.

fuck you blizzard, this was going to help tide me over till next-gen when PS3 and Rev come out next year. Guess I'll have to play the PS2 version once I get a PS3. Or maybe I'll just boycott the game altogether. I can still enjoy the single player experience on the GC you know!

So where are the legions of nintendo fans proclaiming they didn't want the game anyway? Yeah, ok. :lol

In all fairness... I never cared about the game much at all. If I ever bought it, it would have been at a heavy discount.

I would have bought the cube version of this.

I don't understand why Nintendo can't support BBA owners over the same server infrastructure as Nintendo Wifi connection... they lost Burnout 3 for this same reason, which was a franchise doing well on cube, and they've probably lost many other games. They got lacking modes in cube versions of things like Timesplitters 3 too. They should have had this angle sorted when they were planning Nintendo wifi...

Ah well, I'll pick up the PS2 version (if it ever comes out).
Blizzard seem like a no brainer for making interesting Revolution announcements btw.

It isn't just the matter of Nintendo not supporting any sort of online deal, I recall that Nintendo was actively badmouthing and fighting against going online back when they took a page out of the book of Apple and attempted to push the Gamecube-GBA link thingy beyond the realm of all sanity.

What's the percentage of a game's userbase that goes online?

Of a Blizzard game? Pretty high i imagine.

Metal Arms actually had really good multiplayer but it wasnt online so it got ignored on the whole, so I definitely have hope that the online portion of this will be good.

I just got a look at a Zerg in combat(though, only like 5 secs) thanks to IGNs Blizzcon Tour video.
The video was up at the main page yesterday but I couldn't find it now.

Wow, that thing was fast! It looked awesome in action.

ok the baiting for nfans in this thread is really dumb *cue:kryptonian*

we all know that GC is dead third party vise at this point.
