Starhawk (Closed) Beta Testing thread of impressions and questions.

So I booted this up and closed out of it after a minute. WTF did they do to the camera, I hate it. It really bugs me after the perfect arcadey camera of Warhawk. I think this alone is enough to get me to not buy the game. I also don't like the building stuff. Off to redownload Warhawk!

Finally got to spend some time in a hawk. Transforming was awesome, dog fighting didn't work out too well. This game is definitely a creeper and I like it more with each match.

It seems every capture the flag game I've been in has ended in a stalemate. This might be the first mp game ever where I prefer vanilla death match to any sort of objective mode simply because all the building and craziness adds some nice depth/strategy to the matches.

What sort of modes and how many maps are supposed to be in the final game? The Wikipedia page isn't very helpful.

I'm also curious about the plans for the single player. Is it going ton have the whole build and battle thing/vehicles thing or will it be more of a shoot you way from point a to point b thing?

I'm This close to being sold on it. Yet, it makes me long for the ps1 warhawk where you were flying the whole time...oh well...

Shooting mechanics really aren't clicking with me. I can't really tell if I'm damaging someone with my firing. I think there's some design issues with the basic mechanics, going all the way to basic movement/motion and camera placement. Everything feels a tad off. Got to fly one of the starhawks, it was pretty neat.

Can you not play with the closed beta client?

I haven't been able to play since the last beta. It downloads the updates but then I get a "an error has occurred"

This is the first time I have turned on my PS3 for a month and I noticed something was there...So I guess I got in because I am a plus member?

I bought a PS3 for Warhawk. I sold the PS3 a year later.

Now I wan't to buy a PS3 again for Starhawk... I didn't think this through when I sold my PS3...

Not sure if you follow the industry, but there were quite a few great exclusives between Warhawk and now, just saying.

They finally added the ability to reclaim Pod Beacons (Outposts)! F*CK YEAH!

Next they need to show us player ping times. Lag is a killer in this game. It would be great if they would add an option to auto prune players whose connection gets persistently shitty (say their ping drops below X setting).

Played this game for the 4 days and this game is AMAZING but there's a steep learning curve.

- At first I disliked flying the hawk until I changed the flight options to CLASSIC
- I accepted there is no hover mode in the hawks so get used to holding L2 or transforming
- Didn't know you can gather while creating a spawn point. Lot's of possibilities
- Some of the team work I see, with building creations left me amazed.
- Didn't know you can build while flying the hawk, these hawks were dropping turrets. CRAZY
- building upgrades

Again there is no tutorial and there's a steep learning curve. Had to look all over forums and message boards for help but once it clicked, I had a great time playing online.

Lightbox Character Basics Guide.

My crappy guide.

I may get this game Day One. I was going to wait for a price drop / sale, but man it's just too damned addictive.

Doesn't really matter - Warhawk / Starhawk are unique experiences. There is nothing like them from other developers on PS3 and I couldn't find anything close to it on 360. Wii just doesn't count even though I own one it's not an online multiplayer console. :P

Just tried the demo for the first time and man, this game is just as amazing as I remembered Warhawk was. Except now it's got better art style and balance and weapons and RTS elements :)

So... is the BETA still going or not? oO

Well i played it last night but its the public beta thanks to the key i got from Gamespot, IIRC it even says public beta 1.2.7 at the top left of the screen while playing.

It was alright but i didn't even fly a warhawk since thats the first thing people go for it seems :( , also chillin in the gunner seat while another was driving the jeep really horribly was pretty funny.

Will try it some more so i get a better feel.

So is it a new download or something? Because all I get is "error occurred"

i corrected my post above stating what it really was, so i guess its a new download?

all i did was get the client, downloaded a 300+MB patch, downloaded a 29mb patch, start game, informs me that its updating to latest version and restarts the game, start playing.

I'm absolutely loving this game. I generally like to blow the crap out of the other teams buildings and place a bunch of turrets around their base while blowing everyone up with the rocket launchers or being close range with the shotgun

The more I play this game the more I love it. Warhawk was the best mutiplayer game of the generation for me (next to LittleBigPlanet series) and this just takes it further. The RTS elements do so much for the strategy of the game, holy crap.

How do you place a spawn beacon in a new area? I keep hanging out in those unclaimed territories but I don't know how to claim them lol.

Holy fucking start up time batman, been sitting here for like 5 minutes between updates and load screens.

Gone are the days of just playing games for a couple minutes.

How's the beta? Worth playing?

Did you play Warhawk? Y/N

If Y, then play Starhawk Beta.

If N, then keep playing whatever dookie you play. :\

agreed, its quite annying

THIS BETA SOFTWARE NEEDS TO STOP BEING UPDATED AND REFINED I WANT TO PLAY NAO!

You do realize how silly you're being, right?

Big dick swinging matches tonight. Nothing below 14k points. ^_^

Played this afternoon and had a ball.

On the space map, I dropped a spawn beacon and sniper tower at the center of the map. Fellow teammates spawned there and summoned a launchpad. After sniping fools and eventually piloting a mech to my death several times (sacrificed myself numerous times in enemy territory), I eventually snuck my way into their base, dropped a spawn beacon, laid waste, dropped a laser cannon, laid waste and moved into their last little corner of safety zone and dropped another spawn beacon. Felt evil.

Not your fault the enemy team is wildly incompetent. :P

What I've been doing on the Space map is spawning on top of the bunker, shooting the two RE barrels, jump down - drop jetpack pad. Grab jetpack the sally forth into battle.

The faster I can blow up the enemies stuff, the faster I can get into being a full on jerk.

So, I'm playing this for the first time this evening. I think it's awesome? I've been playing an hour or so, just CTF, and I'm slowly getting into it. I shall definitely be using this thread for GAF tips on strategy and such.

Starhawk Public BETA Update 1.2.9
Overview:
This kind of system is often referred to as "perks" by players and by other first-person shooters. However, the team here at LightBox Interactive is very aware of how "perk" systems can adversely impact the overall balance of a game and we've developed our system to avoid those problems as much as possible while still providing players with some really great incentives and unlockable goals. And to achieve this difficult balance, we've made a few very significant changes to the skills in Starhawk that set it apart from the skill-systems found in other games.

THERE ARE NO SKILLS THAT GIVE YOU MORE HEALTH, OR ACCURACY OR MORE DAMAGE!

You can only have a single skill active at any time and you can only change your skill if you are waiting to respawn. You can changes skills while you are alive however the change will not take effect until you respawn.

There is no "skill-tree". Players never have to unlock skills in order to unlock "higher-level" skills. In Starhawk, we provide players with a flat list of skills. We want players to be able to customize their character to suit their play-style without having to wade through a bunch of skills that they don't care about.

We are working very diligently to make sure that no one skill is significantly better than another. We want them all to be as equal as possible so that the Starhawk skill-system is more about focusing on personal play-style rather than grinding through incremental stages of better and better "buffs".

Unlocking skills in Starhawk still requires, well.... some skill! To unlock a skill you need 2 things: The required number of skill-points, and the required prerequisite.

Skill Points:
Skill points are awarded to the player every time they level-up. Currently in the BETA we have each skill requiring 2 skill-points. This means that you get a skill ever two levels. You can see your skills and how many skill-points you have by selecting the "Skills" screen from your Uplink. The number of skill points you have available is displayed in the upper right corner of the screen.

Why skill points? Well, flexibility really. We wanted to be able to adjust as needed and while we very much want to make sure all skills are as equal as possible and require the same number of skill-points to unlock them, we are just trying to plan ahead just in case we want to try unlocking skill every level, or a skill every 3 levels or experiment with skills that cost different amounts.

Prerequisites:
These are like trophies or achievements. Things you have to do in-game to prove your skill. For example, the pre-req for the Scavenger skill is "Get a kill with every troop weapon in a single game".

When you activate your Skills screen in the Uplink, you will see a list of all your locked skills and then on the right side of the screen, you will see the prerequisites listed for each one. Initially, they will all be displayed in RED because you have yet to perform the required actions. Once you have however, the prerequisite will be displayed in GREEN informing you that the skill is now available for unlock -- given you have enough skill-points, of course!

Hmm, first time I've played since the 1.2.7 patch, not sure how I feel about the pre-installed base structures, takes away from the creativity a bit. Felt a little laggy too, more then I remember, teammates were still idiots though, so at least that was familiar. :\

You can see two new air weapon pick ups, most likely the flak gun and cluster bomb. I'm most excited about seeing how the large map and 32 players compares with the scale from Warhawk. Still not sold on this.

This is maybe my fifth or sixth time playing the beta and man. It's just not clicking. I hate to have to say it, but I don't see this game going anywhere. It's one of those cases where the mechanics sound better on paper than they do in-game. I'll give it another try if they introduce a new and substantial patch, but until then it's a no go.

Absolutely addicted to the beta, been playing it since the private beta and even though its 2 small maps and not all features it is so addictive, so many ways to play.

Looking forward to them adding a new map to see how it plays, especially if they add the jet bikes as the vehicles are good fun.

Has there been any kind of media telling us all of the vehicles or total number of maps etc yet?

May is too far away!

I love Starhawk too. Couldn't get into Warhawk before. I love the building element.

Shooting with regular rifle can be improved though.

When is this new map suppose to drop? Might have to redownload and give it another try, Like many others Loved warhawk but this one just didn't click.

I do understand the rifle issues, but I personally do not have that many issues with it, I just tap fire and the accuracy is pretty good - if anything maybe it takes too many to kill?
