Now, go spread the word and let everyone know that the Starhawk Multiplayer Beta is open to all PlayStation Network members!

What you need to know:

This is a true beta, not just a demo. So keep in mind that there might be connection problems and balance issues still present. The devs are releasing new patches couple of days to adress the problems. Also keep in mind that there is regularly scheduled maintenance (server down time) every day at 3pm Eastern, so lets keep the "OMG I can't connect posts to a minimum."

The Take Out Bandit Guide:

Here goes. . .

Starhawk BETA Primer

Before you spawn you can choose where on the map you want to be dropped, you can use the left stick to finagle it so you spawn well out of the range of your rift spawn location. As your pod is rocketing to the planet press the stick in the direction you want to head.

You can get an Incoming kill bonus if you drop your pod on an enemy on foot, in a hawk, or in a jeep. Even in a jetpack if you’re that damn good.

You pop out of the pod with a machine gun and three grenades. Not much of a change, but a fighting chance if you choose. Machine gun loses accuracy crazy fast. As it is in Aliens, fire with short controlled bursts to maintain accuracy best.

X jumps
Hold down R2 to sprint
R1 fires the equipped weapon, L1 lobs grenades.
R3 is the melee attack which is presently one hit, one kill. This can be used on hawks if you land on top of them and stab the pilot or against a non-moving jeep passengers.

Three grenades and some machine gun fire is enough to stop a jeep or a Hawk if need be.

Weapons found on the Map:

Weapons on the map are spread out on the map on what look like futuristic manhole covers. On the maps you will find:

- Repair Tool near both faction bases. The repair tool can be used to fix your Build & Battle (B&B) structures and vehicles, or damage enemy structures and vehicles.

On the space map it is to the left of the rift energy generator on the other side of the map, run under the little bridge and you will find it there. On the Acid Sea it is on the right side of the dirt road closest to the actual sea, if you pass the two rift energy (RE) barrels to your right, you have gone past it.

- Land Mines. Land Mines currently always spawn near the Outcast side of the map and they look like a bundle of dynamite.

On the acid sea they are on the protrusion with the ladder leading up on the Outcast base in the dead center of the map. On the Space map the mines can be found to the left of the top of the ramp leading to the center, on the right if you’re approaching from the Rifter base.

- Ammo Packs, these look like metal rectangles. They contain limited ammo for all weapons (except repair tool, I need to confirm this) and one grenade. There are several of these strewn about both maps and they’re seemingly useless if you have no good weapons.

Weapons in the B&B Supply Bunker:

- Shotgun
- Rocket Launcher (x4), dumb fire with R1, hold down L1 to aim and lock on to jetpacks or hawks.
- Grenades (x1 per respawn within the bunker IIRC)

Vehicles

There are three vehicles in the beta which are obtained from the various pads / garages. Each vehicle cost TWO RE to spawn. You do not need to spawn a new pad/garage to obtain a new vehicle! Every B&B structure has a small yellow access panel. For vehicles you approach this, press SQUARE and a vehicle will spawn for you.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT HOLD DOWN SQUARE WHEN SPAWNING A VEHICLE! This will reclaim the bunker and send the rift energy (I don’t believe it’s 1:1) back to the person who spawned it. Holding down square is screwing your teammates.

When you spawn a vehicle pad / garage the first vehicle comes free. If you spawn a Jetpack pad, make sure you run up and grab your jetpack before somebody else or it will then cost you TWO RE to obtain a jetpack. Hawks and jeeps just sit there until you use them.

- Jeep, this is a three seater. Driver, Passenger, and gunner. The passenger can fire whichever normal weapon they have equipped drive by style, or use the repair tool on the jeep while driving.

Controls: R2 gas, L2 brake, press both and you E Brake for tight turns. L3 is the horn. You can hold down X and use the left stick to change seats in the jeep while you’re still in it.

- Hawk, one pilot no passenger. Be careful - unlike warhawk you are exposed here and in mech form you can be knifed by jetpack users or head shot by a sniper.

Mech Controls: X jumps, O transforms. R3 or L3 is the mech stomp to squish humans under foot. L1 dumb fires weapon pickups, and R1 is machine gun.

Flight Controls: R3 is chaff to get rid of missiles or mines attached to you. Chaff regenerates over time. L2 is brake, R2 is thrust when held down, double tap R2 to boost or double tap and hold to boost until you run out of boost. I believe you can still E Brake in a hawk by pressing both brake and thrust. All modes IIRC have canned missile scrubbing by pressing the left stick in a direction and pressing X, this can be changed in the options.

L1 fires weapon pickups, and R1 fires machine gun.

Jetpack - Jump and hold R2 to fly. Feather R2 to float around. holding down L1 to aim while hovering will lock you into position until you deplete the energy or get your shot. Pressing X while flying will boost you vertical and deploy chaff to lose a missile / rocket launch. Pressing O will boost you down and deploy chaff to lose a missile / rocket launch.

Your team starts with nothing at the start of the game. You will need to gather RE by waiting for dole like a 99%er at the rift generator, or you can be a Starhawk 1%er and mine RE by shooting the green barrels on the map.

The space map has 24 barrels, the Acid Sea has 16 barrels. Mining RE allows you to build fortifications faster for your team.

The six crucial structures for a forward base are:

- Pod Beacon so your team mates can spawn there. This will also spew RE.
- Vehicle pad (I prefer jetpack or Hawk for greater mobility).
- Supply Bunker
- Sentry Guns x3 on top of the Supply Bunker. You can mount these on top of the supply bunker for defense of the bunker against attacks. It’s better to put them there as foot soldiers have limited options of approach against them.

It is better to repair a structure than to lose it and need to farm the RE required to spawn it again. Always have a repair tool handy!

Spawn forward! Defend your base and structures. Be mindful of the 32 B&B limit (e.g. on space map you only need three walls in a linked triangle to protect the flag).

Be aware of what is around you when you spawn! You do not need redundant structures in an area. See what is NOT there and build it.

Destroy the enemy structures. Always be destroying the enemy structures. Damn your KDR, get in there and blow their shit up! Do not let these godless sons of whores have anything they can use against you! Prioritize your attack. Take down their vehicle pads first, in order of priority:

- Hawk Pad
- Jetpack Pad
- Garage

Then take down their automated artillery! Beam cannons and Sentry Guns CAN be damaged by a machine gun. Do not forget this. You can take them out at a distance and approach safely. Sentry guns on the ground near you can be one hit killed with a melee attack (R3). Sentry guns can also be shot in the red dot in the front between the guns with a sniper rifle for a one shot kill.

Once you’ve crippled their vehicles and automated defenses, take out their supply bunkers and sniper towers. Never stop kicking your enemies in the balls and teeth! </ePatton>

I felt disappointed for a minute as I ran around looking for vehicles, then I dropped down my first emplacement and immediately fell in love.

Haven't played the beta since Valentine's Day (Twisted Metal!) but gonna hop on now, see they made a lot of changes even in that short time. I just hope not everyone is using the Vulture jetpakcs and the Hawks have returned to dominance (I'm not even a flight player, I just want to be terrorized when I see a hawk come at me like in Warhawk).

great warhawk style fun but the stupid 10 second animation every time you load the game or get kicked back to the main menu after a game crashes ruins it for me.

I am already bored of watching the main character standing up and looking at his future ipad thing... please Lightbox let me mash start to skip that animation please.

I wished more devs looks at the speed of the COD menus instead of ripping everything else from it off.

I should give it another go. Didnt like how the game felt a few months ago.

Same played a few maps and would much rather play Halo 2 multi, sadly I can say that about pretty much any game. I fuckin miss you Halo 2!

edit: reason i say that is cause the look reminds me alot of Halo

I guess I should update the game since I haven't played since closed beta. But my feelings are the same as Warhawk: It's an okay game. But I feel like Warhawk eventually the veterans will be stomping all over newer or "casual" players to the game and I really don't like the build mechanic too much. It's an interesting idea but it slows the game down and while you're building something you're too exposed to fire since there is a certain "limit" in range around you to where you can't really build too safely while near enemy bases to put up walls and the like to stop their advance.

I forgot about the beta and didn't redeem my U3 code, so I'm definitely going to hop on this.

I completely agree. Fluid and fast menu and UI navigation is one of the most overlooked aspects of game design IMO. One of the many reasons Super Stardust HD is a near perfect game is simply because there is essentially zero load time when navigating menus.

Any word on a party system? Is there going to be one in the final game? If not i really don't understand the reasoning there... in fact why isn't there one in the beta?

I will try it again once the 32 player map hits, but I can't say I enjoyed much of the beta at all. Heck I have been in since the Private beta and may have only played 10 matches. I was really looking forward to this game, told all my friends about, was blown away (and still am) by the engagement of Dylan Jobe and LBI, but I just cannot get into the game. I am even OK with it not being a Warhawk clone.

Hopefully something clicks in the 32 player map, because I want to like this game.

Just got a few games in, definitely liking it. Hawks seem kinda weak though, don't know if its just because I'm really bad with them. The building system is great, allows for alot of nice defensive and offensive options.

The low player count makes the maps feel a bit empty at the moment though.

Hmmm, I want to like this game and there are ideas about I love, but it is like I'm bored half the time I'm playing it. I mostly have fun on the Space map with smaller teams. (I was in the private beta, but didn't bother posting in the other thread.)

There are hawk weapons yet to come, which will no doubt increase the strength/survival rate. Things such as cloak, there is a video here there is another video somewhere showing cloak - oh hang on this could be it

Wow, first time seeing the new weapons. Pretty sweet. Not liking how there is no overcharge for the hawk torpedo (meaning if you charge it up too long it doesn't work). Seem like you can just charge it up far away from combat then go into the enemy base and unload.

Is it the same as the private beta ? I have decided to buy the game already, but if the public beta has new stuff, I don't mind toying with it more.

well I wanted to play this last night but after 4 hours of downloading (finally finished) I had to go to bed, will try again tonight but know I still have 2 updates to download for it.

Those that liked Warhawk, are you liking this more or less then that game?

It has had some tweaks since the private beta, it has also had the skills added (where you earn points to spend on a skill)

big update due anytime now, with new 32 player map, hover bikes and more

I loved Warhawk, was never amazing at it but enjoyed it anyhow. I actually prefer Starhawk, just so many options make the game different every single game -and this is from a 2 map limited beta, we are still missing skills, weapons, vehicles and more maps, it's a pre-order for me without a doubt.

the building is fun too, adds a great dynamic to the game and can turn the tide at any point if you work together, great fun.

The closed beta really turned me off. Warhawk is my favorite game this generation and Starhawk just hasn't felt right.

Give the game another chance. I had 270 hours in Warhawk, and I loved every minute of it. When I tried the closed beta of Starhawk, I hated it. Yesterday, I decided to download the beta again, and it has really clicked for me. I don't even know how to explain it.

I just hope the ranking system doesn't give unfair advantages to higher ranks. Have they mentioned anything about ranks?

I played it really drunk one night after a bachelor party. I know I know, not the best way to have my first interaction with the game. I just had no clue what was going on. :) Looks fun though!

Don't think I'm sold on the Build and Battle thing yet.... I think it slows the gameplay pace down compared to Warhawk. And the hawks can't hover, but I suppose the mechs replace that. When I heard of it first I was thinking day one but the public beta will have to really convince me if that's going to happen now

I only played a couple of rounds but I liked it. One thing I did notice is that all the environments look kind of similar so I'm hoping I will see more variety as I play.

It's interesting.

Good, but different.

The most unfortunate aspect of the game presently is the dogfighting. Swarm missiles suck, homing missiles suck, it's too damn easy to shake locks. You're more likely to be bored to death dogfighting than shot down.

Dogfighting really lacks the skill and finesse of Warhawk. :(

Er, when's the last time you played? The last patch actually decreased the power of the swarms and increased the ease of scrubbing because it was far too easy to get A2A kills.

It's a beta so hopefully that will be fixed in the main game, but yeah totally with you on this, would prefer if it were fixed in the next update. Hate waiting for the 10 sec animation every time i fail to connect to a game..just wanna go back to the server selection screen and don't want to watch a whole movie to get through to the server selection screen again .

Also, they need to add in the option to filter games by type and after you select a server and it's screen comes up right where it says join game…there should be an option to refresh the game room to see if it's filled up or not all of a sudden..I'll be trying to join a game with 12-13 players and when I click on it just before it goes to the load screen it will show room full and I won't be able to cancel join and have to wait for the fail to connect message and then watch the movie again before I can get to the server selection screen..having worked in UI design and QA, stuff like this really bothers me. User experience should be high on the list of any developer because it can put of people..first impression last impression..most of the time…and before many people actually get to the play the game they will rage quit..so yeah if anyone from lightbox is reading this please fix this as soon as possible..shouldn't have been left for the public to experience in the first place..your QA team should have picked up on this..I wonder how many people who experienced it here in the beta were put off by it and won't ever return to the star hawk universe..which would be a crying shame because...

Warhawk has been my fav game this gen. One of the best most fun games I've ever played. The action is just so fluid and seamless. The more I play this game the more I think it is the true successor to warhawk. Didn't like it at first but they made some good changes like pre-placed structures that brought back the idea of jumping into the action straight away, just like in war hawk. Just about everything is improved in star hawk from war hawk..I would not put war hawk down every time I turned my ps3 on and because of it I have a huge back log of games that I haven't played like uncharted 3, resistance 3, midnight club los angeles..etc.but ever since I've really gotten into star hawk, have not gone back to war hawk even once..amazing. Imagine the possibilities with star hawk because of it's improved engine..map packs..dlc..plus all the stuff lightbox hasn't shown us still..exciting times.

I would really love to see epic space battles with cruisers where you can take off and land into from..maybe in the single player..

finally played a few rounds today, ground combat is much improved over what I played of Warhawk, flight im not a fan of so far..like Warhawk much better in that aspect

i must have played close to 300 hours of warhawk and this game has given me the feeling its going to have me hooked all over again.

loveeee it, love the building element of the game.

preordered it.

Fantastic, isn't it. Can't wait for the Dust map update to arrive. Have you seen the video showing all the Hawk's weapons/abilities?

Er, when's the last time you played? The last patch actually decreased the power of the swarms and increased the ease of scrubbing because it was far too easy to get A2A kills.

This afternoon. I play the beta almost every night.

Air combat just isn't as awesome as it was in Warhawk.

I don't think the solution is in making all locks (rockets, missiles) easier to scrub. Nor is it in adding / reducing the damage, and/or lock on time of your 64 Swarm Missiles.

I really think they need to reduce the overall quantity of swarms and then go from there. Having 64 of the damned things feels like it's at the foundation of why the A2A game is constantly being tweaked.

I also think maintaining a lock briefly when the enemy flies off screen is plain bullshit.

Don't get me wrong here, I realize it's a beta and this is why we're playing it; and there's a lot I like about the game, but right now dogfighting is not as thrilling as it was in Warhawk. You just kind of lope around like a big fat carpenter bee lobbing shots at your enemies ass. Warhawks were more like those crazy ass Japanese hornets. :P

I've played quite a bit of the beta and while it's fun in some aspects, it really needs work in others. Primarily they need to change the way the assault rifle feels, the reticule bloom really kills any of the fun using it. Snipers also need to have their aim assist and rate of fire reduced, it's much too easy to dominate spawn camp from a far away vantage point, especially in the space map.

Overall though, I'm just waiting for more new stuff before I jump back in. I've grown a little tired of the limited content that's currently in the beta. That and I've picked up Skyrim again.

I think they missed a great opportunity with Starhawk, there is nothing that made Warhawk fun to be found here.
Sorry Dylan, you are one of my fav devs but you guys dropped the ball here. I hope I'm really wrong and the game sells well, but as it is I can't see myself getting onboard.

Couldn't get a feel for the Hawk, but I never played Warhawk. The building was cool, some people really had a sense of what they were doing with it.

I disagree. I think Starhawk gets flying right more then Warhawk ever did. The flying in Warhawk was broken, plain and simple. They were too, powerful, had too many weapons, the chaff and health pickups regenerated too quickly, and hovermode was bullshit. The only thing better was how tightly they turned, and that Starhawk automatically boosting when you hit something is annoying too. They're still overpowered, and this is without most of the weapons, so LBI really needs to add them to the beta to get the balance right.
