Starhawk PUBLIC BETA Thread | Available NOW on PSN

What exactly is in this patch?

What we know:

New 32 player dust map (larger map)
Jet Bikes (and maybe other vehicles)
Maybe new melee system
Maybe new weapons - ground and hawk

for me, the large map is enough to get a different feel for it

somebody else maybe able to add to the above?

I made a quick spreadsheet to give people an idea of what the different perks do.

In addition to this:

Rift Gathering- You gather rift anywhere on the map at the same speed you normally gather rift in a base (fills 1 rift slot every 30 seconds). This does NOT stack with normal rift gathering, you will not gather rift any faster in a base then you normally would.

Spawn with Rocket Launcher- You spawn with half the max ammo (in the case of the RL 4 rockets). I assume this works the same for all weapons, I've only unlocked the RL one.

Reccomendations:

Based on what I've used the only 3 perks I would ever consider using are Scavenger, All enemies on Radar, and Rift gathering, in that order. Scavenger is amazing for the increased grenades and rockets mostly, the radar is great for seeing jeeps and people scurrying in their base to plan raids, and rift gathering is great to quickly get a base up.

I keep getting stuck on a screen that says "attempt to index a nil value" this either contuinues on forever or crashes my PS3 after 2 minutes

There's definitely something broken with the server list, it seems like it doesn't update when you refresh. Best option for connecting is picking a server with 10/16 or less people in it...much less chance it'll be full when you try to join rather than a 14 or 15/16 game and the games usually fill up fast.

didn't like it then? :)

Sounds like he didn't know what the f*ck was going on. :P

Looking forward to 1.3 because 1.2.11 is pissing me off.

I wonder if you'll be able to carry the flag on the Sidewinder? The reason being I'm expecting it to be crazy fast, so it could be as unbalanced as flying with flag.

If I was to take a guess, i'd say you can carry on sidewinder, but it is likely very vulnerable to fire power, that's if I was to guess! or, they make it so only a passenger can carry it or something (assuming it can take passengers)

be patient, 1.3 is arriving this week, at least we have a time frame now!

Get Hype.

Someone got the 1.3 update early and took some video footage. A lot of interesting changes and tweaks, for both gameplay and visuals. Plus Dust looks GREAT.

Better visual differences between friendly and enemy buildings. Friendly building have greenish hue.

Enemies are orangish

Notably obsent are the jetbike, and you can see the building limit is still 32

Other things I noticed:

  • Reduced lock on range for RL
  • More rift for kills (1-2 slot per kill?)
  • Less rift in barrels. (2 barrels only gave 1/2 slot)
  • Weapon pickups give full ammo (instead of half ammo)
  • Improved sounds from weapons
  • New hawk weapons (flak cannon and TOW?)
  • New animations for knifing people and turrets.

Looks like they took out the razorback and jetpacks to get people to use the new vehicles.

ah yer, good point - there was me thinking about people carriers and things!

don't know if you are watching the feed - but interesting they mentioned in a later update they will likely add the option to spawn different versions of vehicles - so a jeep with a canon, or a jeep with a rocket on the back etc etc

I am watching and I did hear that.

Auto Turrets have control panels!! Let the era of auto turret span end! :D :D :D

hype meter is rising. I was juiced when starhawk was announced and build and battle + transformers were revealed. But my interest in the game plummeted when I found out there was nothing special about the space part of the game other than it being basically just a reskinned destroyed capital. And also when I learned that beta really had very little to it. Thats now changed, and now I'm excited to see the tank mechanics, and the new starhawk pickups.

I'm still eagerly hoping and patiently waiting for more new-to-the warhawk universe game mechanics to be announced. I might be a gaming snob, but hopefully it's for good reason. I'm getting sick and tired of the standard "COD"-esque franchise business model, of sequel after sequel, with each iteration just a refinement of the previous. My insatiable desire for new experiences derived from new mechanics must be satiated. :) Hopefully starhawk will fill that role.

I've had the beta since it came out, have tried periodically to connect, usting matchingmaking and the server list, never once have i gotten into a game, always errors out.....

Looking great.

Though one thing that is bothering me is the way the Sidewinder handles :/ Looks... stiff

think it looks pretty cool? guess will tell when we play it

new melee is great too - so normal knife is in, then if you are close by you stab in the throat/face and kick them down, pretty cool and kz3 esque

the BnB system looks really improved. He's able to put structures on hilly spots where he probably wouldnt be able to in 1.2 beta.

He said they opened the clan system in 1.3 :D

Looking forward to the patch, there is definitely a great game in here. Something is missing or a few subtle changes here and there could bring everything together.

Dude playing must have been in Godmode that last match. He was wreaking shit, and people were running past him like he was invisible.

So Blitz mode is just starting with pre-built bases?

Yep, but it's not just the shitty random buildings that the game does now, it creates legitimate bases.

I don't think that's snobbish, but don't you think that the ability to instantaneously build bunkers and weapon depots and vehicle hangars on the fly is a huge new mechanic? What about planes that turn into bipedal mechs? Or the ability to drop the aforementioned structures straight on top of the aforementioned mech? All of this, plus the distinct new setting seem like a hefty dose of "new" for the franchise.

The beta is so fun, by the way. I'm eager to try this Dust/tank/jetbike update. Any images available of the jetbikes?

Damn, two hours of Dust gameplay on Gamespot? Very nice. I only caught the last 5 minutes, so I'll catch the archive tomorrow. The bikes look sweet!

Shooting mechanics weren't great. Made me wish I was playing other 3rd person shooters instead. Not to mention the framerates were dipping like hell when things got crazy. There's more, but you get the idea. It's a "decent" game.

Sounds like he didn't know what the f*ck was going on. :P
It's a simple game. Sounds like you didn't know what the f*ck you were saying. :P

Yeah I am excited about the build-n-battle innovation. However, as important as significant new innovative mechanics are, how well they are executed is by far more important. To me its all about the depth added that determines whether a new mechanic is an insignificant gimmick or something worthy of getting excited for. So far the new transformers appear to me as nothing more than just a flashy version of the hover mode, except instead of having the flexibility of hovering anywhere, the mechs are now chained down to the ground. Build-n-battle, on the other hand, shows more promise, but the beta threads have been plagued with testimonies stating how the mechanic in its current form is cumbersome and really bogs down the flow. Now that the beta is public, Im definitely going to give the game a test drive myself to see if my view is founded or unfounded.

Though right now, I can envision games playing out where strategic placement of bases create awesome dynamics and where these bases are valued not only just as resupply points, but instead as fortified keeps to launch attacks from. And inversely, also as key locations that stand as impediments to an enemy victory. Thus requiring the enemy to use the teamwork-protected artillery tanks to wipe the bases in order to be able to achieve their primary objective of safely stealing and returning the flag. If this dreamed up scenario can be realized, I'll cream my pants with my biggest load yet. But this can only work if the build-n-battle mechanics are properly executed with unencumbered designs that are easy to use, aren't too shallow, and are also hard to grief with (don't want anything like in warhawk where a team can effortlessly spawn rape a team with airsuperiority).

Speaking of not knowing what one is saying.

I don't see the point in simulated weapon inaccuracy. It feels as if Lightbox is just overcompensating for the complaints FPS/TPS lodged against Warhawk not being a FPS/TPS game. Warhawk wasn't primarily an aim and shoot game, which is why I enjoyed it so much. It offered the option to with weapons that weren't the machine gun, but you didn't need to rely on it.

Aiming with a game pad f*cking blows ass. It will always blow ass, and it's unfortunate that console gamers have such low standards that they'll embrace a pain in the balls control method instead of just getting a gaming PC.

This is why I'm looking forward to seeing more vehicles. Which is the other thing Warhawk did better than any other console shooter out there. If you were sh*t at shooting, you could always hop in a tank or a Warhawk (I'm completely ignoring how wildly unbalanced the Warhawk was in relation to everything else in the game). Starhawk still offers that option and vehicles aren't a second place addition to the game, they're a core component of playing the game.
