Is the no flushing toilet paper thing still common in Mexico? It was common in California schools for students from Mexico to throw the shit paper in the corner of the stall or the trash bin. I remember they would issue statements over the intercom telling the students to just flush the paper.

It's like they've never been to Russia before. I don't know if there's a building in the entire country built after 1920 that has evenly spaced stairs.

Reminds me of that time I stayed in Beijing...

Yay communism

Always wondered how awkward it is for the guy in the corner when he has to squeeze by some other dude dropping a super pickle just to start his business.

By the way, the smell was.... pretty bad....

I wonder how the actual event venues are going to hold up. I shudder at the thought of a major power failure during one of the events, or some other construction-related mishap when it's at capacity.

For all the worries of terrorism, I'd be equally as worried of something falling apart on its own.
Fun fact: all the main venues were built on top of a swamp. Stalin planned to built an airport there but bailed out because the whole thing would had sunk sooner or later. That didn't bother Putin though.

I just saw on CBC how the weather info collection stations for the area have been installed for a year, but only operational for a week. Contrast that with Vancouver, they had 40 stations online collecting data for 4 years prior to games.

A neighbour used to have foreign students stay with them in the summer, and one day she was cleaning out one of their rooms and they had placed their turds in small paper cups in a row along the window ledge.

The toiler paper in bins doesn't sound so bad after remembering that.

Reading about how disastrous Delhi was before the commonwealth games has made me feel a bit better that this won't be a disaster somehow. But who knows.

I remember reading about the sewage pipes in Delhi getting clogged by athletes flushing used condoms down the toilet.

I live in Spain. I've never seen anything like that in over 30 years, not even in the most rural parts of the country. I also travel frequently to France. I honestly don't know what are you talking about.

Same here. And I've been to many parts of Spain. From big cities to small villages and that's never happened to me once.

II've also been to 3/4 of European countries and none of them had this issue.

No the 'no TP in the toilet' is pretty typical in many countries in many continents, including Europe. Like Greece.

Some more tweets from journalists arriving. CNN have one of their 11 rooms booked. Think Putin is trying to tell the free press exactly what he thinks of them. http://mobile.bloomberg.com/news/2014-02-04/toilet-trouble-at-the-sochi-olympics.html

But it gets better. A Russian PR rep explained that famous image with the following:

Doesn't really explain why people have found a few more though...

That looks shopped.

Holy shit it's not shopped.

I am so hyped for the olympics! Is there going to be live streams available by then? I wanna watch the horror unfold real time.

Here's a nice Imgur album on some of the more questionable construction work in Sochi.

Place is a mess.

I can see the album is 1 week old, but how long ago were the pictures taken?

Perfectly normal across East Asia.

I still flush the paper in my apartment though. I ain't emptying that bin.

East Asian countries usually have a mini rinserthingie next to the toilet so you can clean with that, and just use the paper to dry off though... And this included all the places I stayed, and that ranges from 4 star hotels in Koh Samui, Thailand to bungalows on Koh Rong, Cambodia, where they didn't even have proper electricity.

Looks like a mess.

The bin for toilet paper is common in many places in the world and it's annoying as hell. But the double toilets is just insane.

If you have an hour, watch this documentary. Explains the reasons behind everything pretty well.

Edit:
And my theory with the double toilet is, that it was originally meant to be a bidet in the original plans, but at some point someone thought "What the hell is that? Let's just put another, cheaper seat here, and be done with it".

double toilets are some what common in Russia, at least in Moscow. I saw them in ice rinks and big malls.

I actually never knew it was okay for toilet paper to be flushed down the toilet.

My family comes from Mexico and I've pretty much lived in the U.S. my whole life.

We still throw toiler paper in its own place here in our home. And it's a fairly new house on a fairly new division from 2005.

Also just recently found that it is safe to drink water out of the faucets or hose here in the U.S. as well. We still purchase water out of the 5 gallon vending machines, been doing it my whole life.( I guess it isn't too different from people purchasing bottled water)

I guess it became a custom.

Hahahaha. Drawers in toilet picture is hilarious. Would have been more plausible if they'd just claimed they thought synchronized pooping is an Olympic sport.

Putin is losing it. Does he think his superhero abilities enable him to somehow enhance Russia's reputation WHILE giving all the money away to his gangster friends?

Our hockey team had problems entering the main hockey arena - security did not let several staff members and players in and locker room was locked. So they had 5 minutes to unpack whole gear. And they even had problems getting out, because security locked them in....
