Well, when $30b (at least!) of that is funneled straight into the offshore bank accounts of Putin and his cronies, of course the end result is going to be shoddy. Nobody actually cares much about the quality of the work - they just care about the bribes, kickbacks, and getting paid.

This picture sums up the whole problem. Shoddy work done by corrupt employees doing half-assed 'work' while the higher-ups line their pockets with the ill-gotten gains. Maybe the IOC will take this into account next time they pick a host city for the Olympics (or maybe not - I'm sure that plenty of that money went to grease the palms of committee members who gave the games to Sochi in the first place).

Reports from the various sports arenas suggests things are in good shape and the athlete village hotels are of the luxurious and new type so I think we can live with some journalists having to share toilets in terms of this as a spectator event.

It's looks fake. They just say "we've been hacked". And they use Wi Fi in Moscow, not Sochi, and public Wi Fi in Moscow is the same as all over the world.
I understand what is happening. I live in Russia, and all i see on TV right know is how everything good in Sochi, everything ready and stuff, but as you can see it's not entirely true.
On the other hand we have western countries, who obviosly don't like Russia very much trying to tell everyone how bad everything in Sochi. How as soon as you get from plane and turn you phone on all of your data will be stolen, double toilets(i hear it's 1 month old news and been taken care of), then when you try to train you'll broke every limb you have. Which in not entirely true either.
I'm not protecting or anything, and i expected this might get ugly, but let's wait for an official start and then judge.

Russia is crazy expensive as a whole. Moscow too of course. I think on New York levels. Just with more expensive food, clothes and all other stuff. And of course with far worse salaries.

So you're basing this based on how it looks, a presumption that the networks in Sochi are fundamentally more secure than those in Moscow (and thus using Moscow as an example is bullshit), and a false equivalency of the security of Wi-Fi in Russia to elsewhere without anything to back that up? Right.

Ok, hold on, that's pretty bullshit. You're projecting some pretty fucking insidious shit onto a huge diverse group of people from "the west." It's baseless, tasteless, and just plain stupid if I'm being honest. I'm pretty sure the reports on social media coming out of Sochi aren't all from westerners with a hate-on for Russia, and implying that is beyond the pale.

If NBC tells there are hackers, it doesn't mean there are hackers. This report doesn't have any real proof to back that up, everything i see here are lines of code, like in every hacking movie and guy telling "hey, you saw that "downloading" message pop-up? We've been hacked."

Unsecured public wifi is always risky, is it not? It's easy for someone to set up an access point, give it a name "Sochi Cafe," and leave it open for anyone to connect to.

This ceiling is used in Europe, not North America. Not all ceilings have to be out of concrete, just because you get used to it.
Different countries, you know.

It's only more expensive for complex, concave ceilings (like swimming pools that need frequent cleaning). For flat, repeating/large rooms it's much, much cheaper than hanging or plastering and painting a ceiling.

GTA VI: Sochi would be pretty great. All of the missions could be corrupt building practices and taking out rival gangs; the Olympics themselves would make for an interesting backdrop, and there's definitely a wide range of environments available given the limited number of competent rooms we've seen pictures of, compared to pillow outlet and floating radiator.

I've been enjoying this thread and not commenting but now i have to. Concrete ceilings? Who has concrete ceilings. Please tell me where you've seen/heard of these, I'd honestly love to know.

Might be confusing sheetrock, or concrete backer board which is used in showers and bathrooms because it is moisture resistant. But ti ain't concrete concrete.

I mentioned this to my SO and he confirmed that concrete ceilings are thing, but rare, hard to do, heavy, and not for residential housing. So...the more you know!

This is not really abnormal in all of europe in houses where the plumbing is old. My grandmother's house toilet also had a bin for that, and she encouraged us to use the bin instead of flusing it down the toilet.
It's not really that common either, but their you have it.

Sorry wrong word, translation issues.
What i meant is ceiling is not supposed to be hard. Well we all used to it, but there are other options. Whole point is, i don't know why they used this kind of ceiling, but it's certainly not because they did it in the last moment. These ceilings just not common in NA where this reporter who found that is from.

Why is it so hard to believe that it might have been done due to inadequate time budgeting? Tarps aren't exactly known for their superior insulating qualities; what other reason could a hotel have for using one?

They have concrete (structural and basically unfinished outside of stain/polish) ceilings in just about every other loft or modern construction architect-house. I would hardly describe it as rare.
