Steady Growth for NeoGAF

Still my favorite gaming forum out there. Conversations are fair and reasonable instead of being dictated by a bunch of crybabies who refuse to listen to reason.

After my short lived stint over at the other forum and having to deal with its ridiculous gate keeping and forceful and over zealous moderation, I'm glad that I'm here. It's such a breath of fresh air to be able to have an honest and open discussion about gaming without being treated like a child.

Keep up the great work!

What I really hope for GAF is that it doesn't make the same mistakes from the past. I wish that, for the lack of a better word, shitposting never ever grows to unmanageable proportions. That brings about the creation of an echo chamber.

Echo chambers are literally spirit-draining vampiric entities. Most people don't even realize they let such toxic places influence their life. Yett they fester in them. And wonder why depression is such a rampart problem...

For the love of god please never ever let extremely active "prominent" members become the driving moderation force on the forum.
Power corrupts. We've been there and seen where that leads us.

I like your message but take umbrage with your demonisation of shitposting. Shitposts are the lifeblood of a healthy forum that is fun to participate in. I suspect we have different definitions of shitposting though.

You can just say Ree. No need to Voldemort them.

We know NEOGAF got really really ugly in 2018, truth spilling out, forum posters angry, blurting out, it was on fire from there, and probably won't have some members return, the one thing I learned about NEOGAF is it responds well to failure.

Out of curiosity what's a similar snapshot look like from say, 3 years ago? What's the biggest driver of new accounts? Any idea on demographics vs before (any notable difference)? All organic/word of mouth?

I was gonna ask you how the data was looking. I'm seeing a ton of people that I don't recognize so they are coming back. Just hopefully not "them" lol.

Awesome news, glad to be here rocking.

I've been away since the split happened but lately have been playing with the idea of coming back here. I liked ResetEra at first but over time it's just gotten more and more insufferable. I can barely stand reading it anymore, much less actually try to post anything.

I don't think this place is perfect at the moment, but at least I can say as much here without getting my ass blasted apart.

Shitposting only works if it's American. That's HIGH QUALITY SHITPOSTING. However imported Shitposting is terrible. Chinese shitposting or Russian Shitposting are dramatic decreases in quality that bring lameness like Americanized Chinese food.

I'm so glad to be back here after spending a year at shitty retardera. I never should have followed the crowd.
I wasted so much time there, never even posting for fear of getting banned (since I disagreed with 95% of all their bullshit) only to come back here 6 months ago and realise that what I used to love about this place when I found it 10 years ago was still right here, and that I had actually gone and followed all of the bullshit that I had grown to hate about this place in recent years.

This place is so much better now that all those fucking moron SJW cunts have moved to resetera.

I've largely swung back from the other site once I realized its back to its old tricks but worse than ever. I got a few friends to join here in the last week.

Question, is there still a long long account approval process or is it fairly quick these days?

What? What do you want Matt? I got a forum notice from your post... . Clearly said Matt tagged me or something.... (reads post)....Ohhhhh!!!

I don't know how Evilore feels about certain people coming back but i would hope that we are allowed within reason to call them out on their bullshit racism, bullshit censorship, etc.... if they do come back. I just really really really do not want the old Neogaf back, it was such a fucked up hive mind of utter insanity and evil.

That's good to hear. All you hear elsewhere is anger and negativity. People tend to get tired of it quickly. Glad GAF is growing again.

I mean more the mindset and attitudes they bring. If they want to participate and have conversations fine. But this reactionary bullshit they do is not a conversation. There's literal memes of them and I like where this version of Gaf is going. Let's not be a meme lol.

We did it? WE DID IT!™

Happy to be a part of it. Props to you for running a tight ship. We, all of us, can do it. There's nowhere to go but up! Keep up the good threads and good discussion y'all. :messenger_heart:

40k-50k posts per day on average back in 2017. It was a challenge rebuilding from a 500 post per day pile of rubble that was being constantly spammed with gay porn attacks by ResetEra people, probably a lot more difficult than starting from scratch in most respects, but it's not in me to give up on this place.

Demographics shifted a few percent more non-US after the drama, otherwise pretty similar. Registrations are all organic and word of mouth, yeah.

Grats EviLore EviLore ! Having been on the forum since the beginning, I'm really happy to see how it's been doing. This place has really benefited from the enema it got in 2017 and reminds me much more of how the site was decades ago. One thing that really impresses me is that even as the forum activity continues to grow, it's still dominated by intelligent discussion without too much in the way of low effort drive by posts. In the last couple of years, this forum has once again become one of my favorite places to visit on the internet and I'm glad. :)

Activity is awesome, but the tech guys behind the scenes are doing an amazing job of constantly rolling out features that are actually meaningful and add to the overall GAF UX. Cheers to everyone who's been busting their asses to modernize this place!
I second this, I hope Evilore and tech crew have some sort of a patent on the layout of these forums, they are indeed a breeze to browse and interact with others and the whole, like, laugh, Praise the sun, Fire, triggered etc. emojis are great. I want to suggest maybe two more "harsh" and "savage" since some people post such stuff, but I can see people saying shitty things just to get those badges, so maybe it is a terrible idea, and "triggered' will do :p

Again, good job to Evilore and the folks who work hard to make this place a chill, informative, funny and inviting community to share our hobbies and ideas. Believe it or not, I've been a Gafer since 2006, even though I have taken some year long hiatus' as long as I'm still slightly interested in gaming/ community, I know where to stop by.

It's incredible that this place survived, thanks to EviLore, a handful of people who weren't suckered, and the new excellent mod team.

I can't believe how badly I got played in 2017. My frustration towards the moderation had been growing over the preceeding few years. When there was a chance to release that frustration, I didn't consider at all that the hateful moderation and dog piling culture wouldn't be the brainchild of the site owner. So I happily jumped on the promise of a new start, marketed as fair, transparent moderation tolerant of all kinds. It took me a year to finally realise that it was the same deal, but boosted to the max.

I am happy I got to return. This place is so much better now with all that hate gone. People are both cracking jokes and posting meaningful, well articulated answers, both which make the site enjoyable. I think when smart people dare to look past the "gaf is alt-right" FUD, many will come to the same conclusion. The numbers would indicate that.

What went down here has certainly been an eye opener to me. Thanks to everyone who kept the site alive for us suckers to return to.

Is Neogaf still suffering reputational damage from the crazy pre-meltdown era (i.e. are there still lots of people out there who think Gaf is a toxic, social justice hivemind), or has word of its new, chilled incarnation got out there?

I am happy to see NeoGAF doing so well. I am also happy to be here and contributing to the community in a positive manner. You guys rock. This is the ONLY forum I post at and it'll stay that way. I'm exclusive, baby. :messenger_winking_tongue:

Awesome. I think the best part is Politics having its own sub-forum. I find it melding in with OT can be a nightmare. I hope the positive vibes continue!

I watched this place from 2005 to the present as a lurker, and found it amazing the turn the forum did during the 15 primaries. It almost instantly transformed overnight.

You could see some of the undercurrents brewing if you look back, but the primaries really starting bringing out the worst and it was all downhill after there. Once Trump was elected there was no going back, as too many people were entrenched and too many people had been banned for trying to use logic.

I still to this day say internet activism took off in the gaming forums when they got Adam Orth fired.

Had this not happened, they wouldn't believe they have the strength they do and things like "gamergate" wouldn't have existed.

Many people oppose this theory, but it is the 1st internet event that caused these "activists" to see they could force change.

Ever since that day it's been one upmanship on who can be offended first.

In defense to the 10k per week now, the 40k per day back then were people putting single words like "Yikes" or symbols like "^" or a picture that they had on retainer as they were trying to respond as fast as possible. I mean, it still happens now, but it seems to happen more like when I first joined GAF and not like in 2017 when someone posted something about Hillary or Trump and it would be 3 pages before you could see something resembling a discussion.

Edit: And back in 2017 I suspect the 40k per day was largely made up of the usual suspects who had an average of 60 posts per day on their accounts. (I notice you've left out the average now when you click on someone) I remember getting banned around that time for calling out someone for being that. Basically the mod message was that I was rude. To be fair, I was being an asshole.
