I recently stumbled across the open source software Millennium, which is designed to modify the Steam client in Windows and Linux.

There is a small but powerful library of plugins and themes available.
I recommend the plugin called Extendium, which lets you install Chrome extensions to be used in Steam's built in browser - then using it to install Augmented Steam
