Steam Controller trailer, $50

Steam link & controller pre-ordered!
I only ordered the 1 controlled for now so does anyone know if I'll be able to use my wireless X360 pad on top of the Steam controller, or is it just one or the other?

You can use an Xbox 360 pad and Steam controller at the same time.

The Xbox 360 pad becomes player 1, though.

I'm looking forward to trying this out. Let's see if my hands remember when I used to use a 360 controller.

You must be really bad at using analogue sticks, because they are perfectly fine for someone like me.

I know because I've played a bunch of online shooters, competitive and non competitive. They have always been perfectly suited on consoles. I can even be the top player in games like Titanfall or Call of Duty on PC, while everybody else is on a M+KB.

The fact that they've lasted this long is a testament of how much of a staple they are.

The steam controller looks way harder to use and maintain precision. I've seen impressions myself, but I won't agree or disagree until I get my hands on them. A friend of mine ordered so I'll get to see what they do. I've got bets that they still won't be suited for precision aiming like in FPS, competitively. The analogue will still be king, but I won't make the final call until I use it.

Is this a joke? The analog isn't king of anything, it is not even suited to the current most popular genre on the consoles it is made for. And BTW the only reason it is even usable at all is because of coded in artificial assistance.

One word for AA battery needs: Monoprice. Their batteries are actually extremely high quality for low prices.

Alkaline batteries? HAHAHAHAHA.

yup. I loved Microsofts internal tests of "Pro" players using controllers, vs mediocre players using KB+M.
The Pros didn't win

Don't think Voodoo PC owner would make up shit out of nowhere

It looks great but I'm still hesitant on it, so no pre-order from me. That said, after we have hands on reviews come late October, if Valve has really and truly pulled this off, I'll be buying one before Halloween. I'd love for it to work just as well as it looks like it does.

Right? So aim assist solves all the problems for me. I really don't see anything else that can mimic the precision of a mouse to a T, but a mouse. I wouldn't even be surprised to see the Steam controller needing aim assist for fast paced shooters like COD for better precision as well.

Anyone know how typing works on it? The demo is way too quick.

each touchpad is represented by a floating cursor that maps 1:1 with the keyboard. So the top left portion of a touchpad is the top left portion of the keyboard. It's like moving a mouse around an on-screen keyboard, except you can do two at once independently of each other (one with each thumb). To select your character, you press down on the button beneath the touchpad itself. Thats why they compared it to "texting" - because it feels quite a bit like texting on an old flip phone.

Man, that nasty matte finish in the video gives the controller a real workman-like quality.

I won't be able to resist the first go-round, but there's no way the second revision of that controller isn't going to look a million times better.

This semi-prophetic comment from that page posted 5 years ago stuck out to me.

The ultimate problem with Console gaming is the right analog stick. Microsoft needs to do some research on how they can replace it to make for a faster and more accurate alternative. My thought: a touch pad. Much like one on a laptop, it would allow precise aim, and if they did something like make it more sensitive the further from the center you touch, they could keep up the sustained speed of the joystick!

Can anyone remind me what Steam link is again?

lets you stream steam from a PC to a TV so long as they are both on the same network. Meaning, you have your PC in your office in the back of the house, and you have your steam link in the living room in the front of the house. You can turn your PC on in the back office, and turn on your steam link in your front living room, and you can play your PC games on your living room TV like the PC was there. Provided both the PC and steam link are on the same router/network.

When you stream, you get to use big picture mode on your TV:

Anything you launch from steam can be streamed, and any PC application can be launched through steam. In other words, it's a device that let's you stream your PC to your TV with a nice, console-style interface. You can, as an example, install XBMC on your PC:

And turn your steam link into an HTPC that can play any file format or webstream.

I bought an Xbox One controller for my PC, but I'm really not liking it (the bumpers suck), so I'm actually in the market for another controller to replace it. Seriously considering one of these.

Nice features. The only issue which I believe to be true because there's no other information on it is that you won't get 5.1 surround sound when streaming. Only stereo.

I think steam links are going to be huge. What people just don't seem to get about the steam universe initiative is that it's not all one single product. It's not like "steam machines" are a singular item that can fail. Valve isn't pushing "steam machines" or "steam links" or "steam controllers." It's not about forcing everybody to leave windows and go to SteamOS, it's not about abandoning keyboard and mouse or conventional gamepads.

It's about putting steam everywhere, in the easiest ways possible. You the "build your own PC" crowd with the problem of desktop tower aesthetics killing your entertainment center? Grab a steam link.

Can't play your game with an xbox controller and can't use a keyboard on your couch? Grab a steam controller.

Complete newbie to PC gaming, don't even know what a GPU is, want something that is literally purchase-and-plug-in and idiot-proof? Buy a steam machine.

Can't afford windows in your build? You don't even need windows anymore to run steam.

Before people blink, steam is going to be everywhere and people are going to be wondering how it became such a big force. Again. Because a lot of the barriers to PC gaming that have traditionally stood tall are falling. You don't ever need to see windows again, Steam Big Picture Mode is basically a total shell replacement for windows itself. Console-style UI with a no-compromise PC ecosystem.

I mean I love the idea of the Link and the controller looks neat, but I wish you didn't have to "pre-purchase". I'll just get one in the fall.

Early adopters take a risk. Waiting to see functionality and reception is the prudent course of action.

I cannot understand how that typing worked... How do you type without a cursor??

But I definitely like the look of this, I hope I can use it and that it feels nice to me because I truly would like to play fps games with something other than a mouse and keyboard and from the couch... Aiming with joysticks is terrible.
