I Scraped the Entire Steam Catalog, Here's the Data

I was in a rabbit hole dive on YouTube and came across this little gem of a video. Ever wonder what the totality of Steam looks like from orbit. This guy created a database and crunched some numbers looking at genre metrics, like/dislike, popularity, and developer bias. A 12m video showing some interesting takeaways.

I know his data is a bit old (mid-October), but I calculated ~52 games released per day in 2024 and his data is showing ~70.

Looks like the trend line has been broken and they are on the decline, not rising thankfully.

Yeah, we call those streamer bait.

Shit sucks because it makes many indie devs to think that they'll be more successful making one of those rather than an actual good videogame. And in many cases they aren't wrong.

Too soon to say for sure but it looks like it peaked in 2022

This is actually incredibly useful data for prospective indies. I already came up with a cross genre game from these stats that should theoretically bring in quite a lot of interest across demographics, based on the amount of games available across these genres.
