Steel Battalion - Opinions

I walked in to Toys are us and they had two of these bastards on for 80 dollars each. Is this worth getting or no? The price was hard to resist. Is it a great game or a lame game with a great controller? Or somewhere in between?

For $80, I'll buy the other one off you.

From the players I've talked to, it's a good game, but not really worth the inital asking price.

$80 is incredible. That's a steal. It's really quite an immersive simulation. If you get really good at Mech Warrior, all you're good at is playing a robot video game. If you get really good at Steel Battalion, you're qualified to operate at 50 ton vertical tank in a hostile warzone. The online sequel is also pretty great, but there are some serious issues with it at the same time. The interface and engine were polished and control is a lot tighter. The game will do HDTV and 5.1 surround sound. The game plays out in 10-week scenarios where you fight for control of an island hex-by-hex. You get money and trade parts, buy replacement mechs and so on. If you die, and don't eject, your character is deleted. It's pretty hardcore. Now, because of all this, there are only a limited number of people playing. If you know six people who also have the game, you're in heaven. Otherwise you'll have to match up with other people, and unlike something like Halo 2, you will often be thrown against expert pilots who will tear you apart.

As soon as I saw this thread I called the local Toys R Us to see if this was true (I'm in Canada, and alot of the time the deals aren't the same) and it was, so I dashed down and picked up one. The box was in terrible shape, you could tell that this box had been shipped around alot over the last two years, but everything inside was mint so I was happy. I've only played for about 20 minutes because I've got so much schoolwork to do, but I'm excited. It's great.

I know about Line of Contact, but does anyone know anything about possible sequels? If not for xbox, maybe for xbox2 if it's backwards compatible and controller compatible. Even if they never make another game I would be satisfied. It's just that cool. But I can't help but hope. Does anyone know what kind of numbers Steel Battalion sold?

What city? TRU deals seem to vary wildly even within the country.

What the hell am I looking at?

A japanese page with drivers. Scroll down to where it says "Download" and grab the file from the 0.2.1 Binary link. Then, provided you have the necessary hookup, unzip the files and point Windows at those files when you plug in the stick.
