Stellaris - Paradox Dev Studios new sci-fi grand strategy game

Fanatic Materialist:
Although it hurts, we must grow up and put aside our outdated notions of morality. There is no 'divine spark' granting special value to a living mind. No object has any intrinsic value apart from what we choose to grant it. Let us embrace the freedom of certitude, and achieve maximum efficiency in all things.

Heh..

Yep, going full fanatical materialists on my first playthorugh.

These are voyages of the starship Dawkins... It's mission: to discover new planets and new civilizations, and bring them out of the shadow of ignorance and superstition, one missile at a time!

Sorry for noob question but are these games easy enough to get into?

Only been on PC a year and haven't really touched strategy games yet. But this seems to have a fair amount of hype and I'm looking for something different to play. Thanks :-)

I was fine with the way wormholes and blackholes looked before but I have to admit that they look a lot better now.

Other paradox games can be hard to get into because they throw a lot at you at once, but this game has symmetrical start (you start with one planet, a tiny fleet, a science ship and a construction ship and so does everyone else) which should help you ease into it.

Although this is said to be the most newb friendly paradox game to date, that's not saying much. I'd honestly suggest for a first step into strategy games you start with something like civ V with expansions or Endless Legend. If you have confidence that you won't get frustrated while trying to figure out how the game works, it's a great game system.

To add to what already has been said:
A: How easy will it be to just pick this game up and play?

H: That has been one of our obsessions, accessibility, it’s been hard to get into our games. So we have made everything we possible can to make this our most accessible game ever and I think we have succeeded with that. We have our in-game tutorial, the advisor system, and we have given the GUI a lot of thought to not make it so “overwhelming” but to be easy to use.

A: I spoke with Dan Lind (Hearts of Iron 4 Team Lead) and he said that they failed with that in Hearts of Iron 3, it was too much information and not the greatest GUI.

H: Yes, that’s the thing with most of our games, those who aren’t Paradox fans has a hard time to get into them and that is something we have really been working on improving.

[..]

A: How steep is the learning curve in Stellaris?

H: It's looking good in Stellaris, that’s one of the good things with 4X games, everyone starts small and you get to learn the game while growing. It gives us the advantage to games like EU IV where you can start as an already big nation like the Holy Roman Empire and have a lot to take care off which can be very overwhelming, but here we can introduce the players to one feature at a time. You have rather few technologies and buildings at the beginning, like you usually do in these types of games, and that makes the learning curve much easier to get through.

Just a heads up for Aussies (or anyone who benefits from paying in AUD). If you're not keen on paying the $40USD Steam is asking for the game, Ozgameshop is the cheapest I've seen. Picked up a copy last night -

Their sell price of $39AUD is a couple of dollars cheaper than GMG with 20% off code and there are no currency conversion fees so save a little bit there. I had $2.50 worth of credit (player points) from a previous purchase so got rid of that, and then scored another $3.90 worth of player points for buying the game due to a promotion. If you include the future savings I essentially paid ~$32AUD which I think is a pretty good deal. Not sure what Ozgameshop are like with their delivery of Steam keys but they're good with physical goods so hopefully they deliver on the 9th as expected.

Just picked it up for 25% off at GMG, use DEALZON25 coupon code.
Brings the standard version to $30.00 flat, includes pre-order bonuses.
That's a good price if you can pay with USD. Converts to $38.70AUD + currency conversion fee they're probably about equal with ozgameshop if you're paying with AUD.

For your first strategy games, it might be a hard start. Paradox games are a bit difficult to get into, you need to understand the mechanics and how they work together. You can't just go around attacking everyone and expect people - both your own and others - not to get mad and create trouble for example. There are a lot of systems and mechanics working together in games like this and you need to figure out what everything does and how they relate.

I'd say give it a try, just start slow and go from there. But be prepared for some frustrations and needing to look at Let's Play or some tutorial videos to grasp the workings. Once you do, you'll become addicted.

Martin Anward @Martin_Anward

The special @StellarisGame feature that I promised: I made a new AI personality that will be in official Blorg mod.

This is the first game it almost a decade that I have wanted a box for. Like an old school PC game box with a sweet cover, large cereal sized case and cloth maps. Too bad Paradox doesn't do that sort of thing.

Yeah same here. It would have been the first one for me since Star Craft II Wings of Liberty.

So tempted with this game, as I have been looking for a good 4X space game to play, I want to start a game/franchise from the start then watch it grow, It looks like a good start as although I prefer turn-based games, I don't mind slow paced RTS's with pause functions.

Enjoyed Civ5 and its add-on's to my surprise as its a genre I have never had much experience in. Watched the previews and it seems pretty newbie friendly, compared to their other games.

On the weekend I mentioned Quill18 saying he's going to England to do something with Paradox, it's pretty much confirmed by community manager Escher that there will be four streams total next week on Wednesday and Thursday at an event in London where they will be streaming multiplayer and that there will be familiar faces there (i.e youtubers/streamers that known for playing paradox games and I know Arumba will be there too).

Will probably be mentioned on today's stream as well.

The Blorg stream is the first stream of a game I've watched so I'm not familiar with how these things work with multiplayer. Will the stream just be from one persons perspective like the Blorg or does switch to different people at random?

I've actually refunded my Stellaris purchase on Steam
to change from Nova to Galaxy Edition since there is no upgrade option. Gotta get me that novel, and I'll probably want to read the collectors book too. First time buying a collectors edition in well over 6 years, but I'm confident this is worth it for me

I don't know if this is legit but here you go:

edit: Sorry, I see you were talking about a collectors package, mea culpa!!!

Thanks for the advice guys. Decided to take the plunge... I don't mind a bit of wiki reading if needs be. As long as the game is good!

£19.99 from cdkeys but I think it's just the base game.
