Stellaris - Paradox Dev Studios new sci-fi grand strategy game

Just pre-ordered Stellaris myself. Ive broken my long standing rule of never pre-ordering a game just to support Paradox, because this looks amazing

Today's @StellarisGame fact: You can look, but it's NOT a good idea to touch...

It angers the Fallen Empire that consider it holy.

[Gaia Worlds are] Quite rare... except around the space of Spiritualist Fallen Empires.
They're always 100% habitable so you might want to tempt faith.

Ethos
:
Materialist
Xenophobe
Collectivist

Government :
Science Directorate

Traits :
Natural Sociologists
Quick Learners
Nonadaptive

I need a Foundation mod. Start on a mineral deprived Terminus in an Empire freying at the edges, guide your people to the creation of a new empire.

Arumba is saying that he and I would guess other youtubers are going to a press event for stellaris in a couple of weeks.

He expects to have prerelease footage from the event. He is also speculating that they might give him access to a prerelease build of the game leading to the event.

Of course he doesnt know if thattwillactually happen or even if it does if he will be allowed to show gameplay.

But cool nonetheless, would love it if we could get early lets plays from arumba and quill and others.

I wonder if people will be able to easily mod in animated portraits or if player portraits are all just going to be stills like in Gal Civ III

I don't think anyone knows how the portraits are composited, but I'd wager it's just a simple sprite image, perhaps with a manifest file spelling out the details (portrait type, frame rate,e tc).

Then modders will just have to create the animation sprites. Mind you, I think static portraits will probably rule the day, since it takes talent and time to make those animations.

The dev diaries are such a good read.

My main takeaway: I love the focus on politics Stellaris seems to have, with pops, factions, and other nations. A complex web of ethics, governments, and strategic desires, with some RNG events thrown in there, too. It really sounds like the ultimate space game, 4X or otherwise, with everything I could possibly want. And there's so much room for potential expansions.

The big question is if you can save the Space Constantinople from Space Ottoman Empire. You know someone will mod that in stat.

So in Dev Diary #21 (Administrative Sectors) the dev mentions that he'd like to explore revolts in an expansion...
Henrik Fåhraeus (Doomdark) said:
While Sectors and Sector Governors cannot demand more autonomy, or directly rise up in revolt (things I’d love to explore in an expansion), over time their population tends to diverge ideologically from that of the regime, and create their own identity. Like-minded Pops will tend to migrate there if allowed to. In the same way, aliens of the same species will also tend to coalesce in the same Sectors. Thus, when Factions form, they will often tend to have their main seat of power in a specific Sector. And Factions can demand autonomy and achieve independence. However, this is something that warrants its own dev diary...

...which makes me wonder if the first expansion will essentially be their Battlestar Galactica xpac, expanding sector features and adding playable robots. Maybe even a "revolt start," somehow. Throw in another pair of ethics about genetic engineering/transhumanism and it'll be all set. They'll call it Stellaris: Age of Ascension.

This is already sort of covered by materialism/spiritualism. I think materialism gets AI research and spiritualism gets psi-power research.

Today's @StellarisGame fact: Liberate Planet wargoal ended up creating a robot empire. Unfortunately it's a bug :(

Unfortunately current mechanics can't handle it and release is too close. Would be awesome to add in future tho!

(Plus, in this particular case it was the simplest type of robots. Basically an empire of kitchen appliances)

Unfortunately, indeed. Would've loved to see an army of toasters take on the Blorg Empire.

I would buy it for sure, I just don't wait to wait too much to play as a robot empire :)

The problem is that sentient robots are an endgame disaster right? How would they balance that without undoing the threat of the endgame robots.

Well, if it's open it at least leaves a possibility that some animated portraits will be made/adapted by modders in the future.

They are a potential endgame disaster. Sentient AI is a tech you can research, so it's not like there's an automatic robot rebellion when it shows up.

I get that much, but if they're an endgame disaster and they're a huge threat, somebody starting as one of them would be OP as hell.

I think the endgame disaster part is they 1. will totally disrupt the empire they start in, making it difficult to crush the uprising, and 2. can hijack AI in other empires to spread the uprising throughout the galaxy.

Maybe it could be hard-mode, where everyone who meets you immediately tries to kill you to stop you from corrupting their toasters and washing machines. It's not like you'll be an unstoppable, mechanical wave of doom when you only have a couple of planets in the beginning.

Looks like you can now share the species you've created via the URL! Also, I think some of the traits were modified/added.

And here's the portraits available; not sure if it's all of them.

Not too long now...

I just noticed there aren't any aquatic species there. Where are the fish and amphibious races?

Granted, it'd be difficult for an aquatic species to achieve spaceflight. It's possible for them to make computers with water, but electricity... Still. I want a dolphin race, dammit!

Any interesting stuff shown on Thursday's stream?

Not sure how I like this solution. Search option is nice, but I prefer the "classic" way of separating them into appropriate categories.
We should definitely organize a gaf mp game as soon as this is released.

Might be an idea to set up a Discord channel given the interest shown in this thread (and in the EUIV MP thread). Makes communication a lot easier/faster.

It was pretty much the war with the Just League. Someone at PDX did build a model of Mercedes Romero though.
Wiz added the filter in your image afterwards because he had to keep scrolling to find the planets he wanted and it sometimes took a while.

We'll probably get many a cosmetic DLC.

I swear that one reptile portrait is a Tyranid in a robe...

One of the most exciting things about Stellaris is knowing Paradox will be supporting it well. I can't wait to see how they add to it and develop it further

CK2 had an absurd amount of DLC, most of it good. I don't really see much emphasis on economic trade (beyond swaps) in the game yet, hope they do something with that, especially with space trading focused governments.

I imagine that it's to keep things manageable in the late game. A war between two federations that cover the bulk of the galaxy could end up with about a hundred different war goals to choose from, so being able to search for planets you want ceded to you probably speeds things up quite a bit.

Cheers. Will see if I have time to catch up before next week's stream.

Search could still work with the other interface.

Just pre-ordered the regular edition from Paradox store. EUIV was my first grand strategy game and once I learned the basics I was instantly hooked. Can't wait for this and HOI IV.

It'll also be interesting to see how crazy Paradox will go with DLC/expansions since they aren't limited by historical events this time around. DLC in EUIV was already top notch.

I've been watching Quill18's stream on Twitch for the past hour (he's playing Dwarf Fortress) and he just mentioned that he's attending a multiplayer event of Stellaris in England with Paradox on 3, 4, and 5 May but he's not 100% sure what will come out of it yet (i.e not sure if it's going to be streamed or people attending like him and Arumba making recordings etc.)

Ok guys, what is a decent resource to help me get into EUIV? I'll never do it without help. I really want to crack it and then move onto Stellaris.

I mean, the 5th of May is only 4 days from release, so I'd hope whatever they do get is able to get put out there pretty quickly. I'm guessing they'll be able to stream a mp game live on those dates.

Think I might get in on the multiplayer with either this race:

The Protoss

tumblr_miiybmDC3V1rawb5do1_250.gif

Millitarist, Collectivist, Spritual, Divine Mandate

With the following stats:

Summary
  • Can build a mausoleum, which grants -10% ethics divergence on the planet on which it is built
  • +50% Alliance cost
  • +10% Army damage
  • +10% Engineering output
  • -5% Food requirement
  • +15% Growth time
  • +10% Happiness
  • +10% Physics output
  • +25% Rivalry influence gain
  • +100% Slavery tolerance
  • +10% Society output
  • +5% War happiness
  • +100% War tolerance

Or

The Zerg:

Fanatic Collectivist Depostic Empire(no government really fits the zerg, unfortunately).

With the following stats:

  • Can build an oversized military station
  • +50% Alliance cost
  • +10% Army damage
  • -15% Building cost
  • -10% Food requirement
  • -10% Growth time
  • +10% Habitability
  • -1% Other species happiness per POP
  • +25% Rivalry influence gain
  • +10% Slavery food output
  • +10% Slavery mineral output
  • +100% Slavery tolerance
  • +5% War happiness
  • +50% War tolerance

I'm up in the air on which one to choose.

I really hope that the race-building options will get a lot more extended during the lifespan of Stellaris.
There needs to be a LOT more traits, and a lot more government types as well. I'm disappointed we don't have a proper Collective, for instance.
