Stellaris - Paradox Dev Studios new sci-fi grand strategy game

You can load a pre-built empire in MP, I believe, but you can also build it from scratch.

That right there sold me. I was contemplating the New Master or Orion, since you get the old games free with it, but it doesn't seem to be getting a lot of love (I know its early acess)

Guess I am putting money here.

MOO 2016 is a solid 4X game, with great production values, but it plays very much like an old school 4X. There isn't anything new or interesting to the gameplay. It's a good game, I'm sure I'll play several campaigns, but Stellaris is in another Galaxy, IMHO.

Agreed.

I bought the new MoO (partially indeed to also get the old games on Steam), and I tried it. It really is not worth investing into just yet. It has a lot of potential, but it needs a lot of ironing out and completion of the features. It's going to be a solid 4X game, just not a very innovative one.
If you want to invest cash in a 4X game now, do it with Stellaris. It's going to blow MoO out of the water regardless.

What's the max right now? Does it kind of go 1 Star System is similar to one EU province?

Large galaxy contains 1000 stars. Can't find the average amount of planets per star right now. Sol system contained 20 objects in the game(planets, moons, asteroids...) in September last year.

While the current max is 1000 solar systems, they have said they are looking to increase this after testing. For some mod testing they had 5000 solar systems and it was still playable, though they suggest they would still need to do some work on it.

Similarly they mentioned going over the current max of 44 AI players (along with all the random aliens around as well). Seems like they will expand it over time

i've been watching the blorg stream, and while the game seems fun, i'm kind of concerned how the ai empires seem to offer very little challenge. it looked way too easy to pump out a big navy, declare war and wipe out your neghbour's navy (even though the neighbour in question was a military junta, and from what i understand more advanced than the player), and then the war was pretty much over.

so does anyone know are there actually meaningful rivalries early in the game, or will you just be surrounded by a bunch of passive empires you can steamroll at will?

More stars means the Trek mod can model the entire galaxy rather than just the Alpha and Beta quadrants. So win!

Alliances will be formed against you if you decide to steamroll or they in any way see you as a threat. Plus there's always the possibility of provoking a Fallen Empire.

I'm not sure where on the stream you are, but they've technically never fought a superior military force, although they were slightly outnumbered the first time they took on the Just League.

Also, they mention at the beginning of each session that they are running hot code on an old save, so there are AI bugs they keep finding as they go along.

but it seemed to be way too easy to avoid fighting a superior force early in the game, and the ai early on seems to be completely unable to counter when you just pump out a bunch of destroyers and launch a sneak attack.

Depending where you are there have been a few bugs making the game easier. The first early on was enemy AI just not building armies to their limit, and more recently there was a bug affecting how quickly and they rebuild armies after losing them. I'm still not sure that combat will be super difficult at release, but the Blorg have been the recipient of a few positive oddities.

hope that is the case. just somewhat alarming that early on they were surrounded by empires who hated them, but not for a second did it feel like they were actually threatened by anything.

It's still pretty early in the blorg game though. The first war they ganged up along with some allies with predictable results. But that early zerg rush caused 3 or 4 empires to immediately unite in order to protect themselves from the Blorg. So that easy victory may in fact have long lasting consequences.

I frankly prefer that a LOT more than the alternative of just making ealy civs impregnable until later in the game.

Then there was the time they pissed off the fallen empire....

That's because they weren't, due to bugs that have since been dealt with. There was bug that prevented the AI's from properly building up their planets and another one that prevented them from doing pretty much anything with their fleets, just of the top of my head. Those are the big reasons the blorg are doing so well.
They keep mentioning that many of the bugs they run into are due to both running on hot builds and the fact that their playthrough has been going on through multiple less than stable versions of the game (which in itself caused a number of odd bugs) and yet people keep acting like what they're showing off is representetive of the full game anyway..

Yeah, the large maps is one of the big things I really appreciate about grand strategy games because even if you end up not interacting with most of the goverments on the map it's still cool that they're out there doing their own thing.
Makes it feel like you're just a small part of it all and that its not all revolving around you, the player, because it doesn't. I think 1k stars is fine and that's what I'm going with on my first game but I'll definitely try larger galaxies at some point

I preordered it because Kabouter promised to play with me. I'm coming from Civ and, skipping around the streams they've got up on youtube, I'm a little concerned that the technology you research doesn't seem to qualitatively change the game much over time, but it looks interesting so I'll try it.

That's my one worry as well but they seem to be actively avoiding some of the potentially gamechanging techs like AI to be fair... And we've seen a ringworld.
I kinda wish wiz had gone with a different alien type, ethos and goverment for todays and tommorows stream just to change stuff up a bit.

I think there are probably a few exceptions, but that's probably purposeful. After all tech changes in EU3/4 tend to be incremental, but they sometimes offer the chance to make social/political decisions that cause more radical changes. This fits in line with how technology has historically worked.

Poor Blorg.

He promised me as well that cheater!

Off the a good start with technical issues. Wouldn't be a paradox stream without them :p
Looking forward to watching that intergalactic war. I have my pc hooked up to my tv so I can comfortably watch them annihilate each other from my couch today.

Stream dying / dead constantly

First one I've been able to view live, typical

It's a pretty common occourance unfortunately. They'll work it out, they always do.

Yep on my TV, have chocolate chip cookies ready for while I watch.

:(

Yeah I'm really suprised by how well it works. I mean they said it would, but still.
I think they only had like 2 or 3 disconnects yesterday?

Alrighties, pre-order done on GMG. I hope I get the pre-order bonuses like it says, since the Steam key gets handed out on release day.

Edit: Asked cknoor on Twitter, apparently it should include pre-order bonuses, so yay.

Yup. This is one of the key reasons I cannot go back to normal 4X/strategy games. I don't want to be 1 of 16 rulers, able to carve out a realm at will. I want to be 1 of 300, struggling and scrabbling over a small corner of the world, before panning out and seeing Sardinia-Piedmont now rules Sweden :D

Pretty cool that she was able to rejoin and play the rebel space foxes after space fox prime were conquered. The multiplayer features seem to be going strong.

God I hate that I can't go home tonight and play this game without sleeping until work on Friday morning.

I WANT TO PLAY THIS SO BADLY RIGHT NOW.

Some afterthoughts from the battle between Quill and TJ taken from twitter.

quill18 @quill18
I'll have to review the VOD to be sure, but I think I only lost about 10% of my fleet over the entire course of the war. #HugeSuccess

The fact that I had such a strong techrate for so long made a massive difference.

I wasn't super far ahead in any one area, but I was slightly ahead in most of the fields. Slightly better weapons. Slightly better shields.

Also, I don't think I actually fought any cruisers -- mostly just destroyer/corvette swarms.

I mean, I only had 5 cruisers myself (and maybe 25 dest, 50 corvettes), but they are beefy and could tank damage.

And finally I always had a slightly bigger fleet. I think the battle with @AsaTJ was something like 6.2k vs 5.6k strength.

T.J. Hafer @AsaTJ
"Slightly" better shields are actually huge. He was one shield tech ahead, but the difference was 2x my shield power

by the way, will there be more colours for empires in the final game? can't tell where one empire begins and another begins at the bottom of the map since it looks like at least three right next to each other seem to be red.
