I actually like post-Evangelion Gainax better than pre-Evangelion Gainax; pre-Evangelion Gainax is a product of its time, post-Evangelion Gainax is a lot more uniquely Gainax-ish in general. Honneamise and Gunbuster are both impressive and very satisfying, but they're just the kind of stuff you would see produced in the 80's animated and directed in the way in which they did things in the 80's; Evangelion and later Gainax productions, even the trashiest ones, really feel like something only Gainax could have done.

Honestly, it's been a few years since I watched KKnJ, so I'm a bit fuzzy on what's happening in that episode. However, IIRC it starts being a leadup to the cultural festival in the 2nd half of the show, which is a let down because the festival isn't what I'd prefer the show to end on.

Episode 19 is the infamous paper cutout episode.

thank you for those Nostalgia trip, gonna try find the Nadia boxset now :D

AWESOME thread. Wings Of Honneamise FTMFW. I have the OOP Blu-Ray version and it is beautiful. I also have the Gunbuster/Diebuster Blu-Ray and enjoyed the movie version but feel like I need to see the entire series to really appreciate it.

Yeah that whole
attempted rape scene
in Honneamise was just out of place. I mean you can't just stick
rape
into any movie and claim artistic license for doing so. It didn't ruin the film, but it definitely has a 'turd in the punchbowl' effect on my memory of it.

Honneamise is the best thing Gainax has ever made. It was the only piece of work in their entire careers that is a true creative art piece with no constrains of commercialism or marketing. It's an amazing movie, and the only thing Gainax has done which is worthy of actual respect. Everything else they have done is far more successful though, so they don't need respect for that, they have the money. :p
This this this this THIS.

Once Upon A Time In America has a
rape scene
and is one of the best movies of all time IMO.

Looking at this just makes me think...Hideaki Anno needs to drop this Rebuild shit and get working on a brand new series, goddamnit!

Although i hated how the quality of the Animation dropped significantly half way through Nadia. The animation was one of the things that i loved that series.

Also, steam punk setting is just fantastically awsome

I'm not saying keep it out of all movies forever, it just felt way out of place and just kind of took me out of the movie.

Pretty much this.

For anyone who wants to check out the full size pictures from Royal Space Force (I try to avoid giant pictures everywhere)

Are you kidding me?! No way that's a movie from the 80s. That's incredible!

There's no reason to expect hand drawn art looks poor in the 70s or 80s....

Love Honneamise, Evangelion, Gunbuster, Otaku no Video, and Karekano. Mahoromatic was Gainax, wasn't it? Thought that was pretty much shit. I need to borrow Nadia from a friend who has all of it.

I guess that will be debated for a while to come....or it would be if enough people had actually seen the movie!

Personally I was fine with it. Surprisng yes, but so were many other parts of the movie.

I hear this kind of talk quite alot on the internet and frankly it confuses me.

I suppose one might assume that animation goes up in ever increasing quality, like CGI does, over time. But that's simply not the case. I mean, people these days can't even seem to draw cars or planes.

If we're talking about sheer raw detail (realism) the 80's is home to some of the best looking anime ever produced, some of which are unmatched by todays standards.

Akira :

Patlabor Movie :

Gunbuster :

Char's Counterattack :

Bubblegum Crisis

That's not even getting into Studio Ghibli's output like Grave of the Fireflies, and Bausicaa etc etc.

Royal Space Force has an HD release? I really need to keep up with anime and releases again especially my favorite company. Having watched an episode of Shikabane Hime a while back and it looks like Gainax is getting lazy lately.

I'd have you beaten if I wasn't in the single digits of my living for most of the 90s! ):

Nadia is definitely one of the very (VERY) few shows, where I'd actively seek out stuff like a complete LD collection, just to own it, if I were swimming in money.

That's so cool! I love Nadia too. If I were swimming in money I'd be like that with Eva stuff as well.

There was never as much merchandise for Nadia than for Eva. They really went nuts with Eva!

That Daicon IV video almost put a tear in my eye from nostalgic bliss. That was amazing and took me back to the time in anime I like the most.

I also need to find myself a better version of Wings of Honneamise some day. I still only have the shitty original DVD release that came out in the US. It looks atrocious.

If your name is Nonoriri you have to go buy Nanami's tampons.

What, no mention of Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou, aka His and Her Circumstances yet? Freaking awesome show. It's a shame that Anno didn't have more of an involvement after the 15th ep or whatever. Also, the ending is meh. But life is about the journey, right?

It's usually remembered for the spastic and crazy comedy more than anything if you ask me. I always hated the drama in the show and the goddamn introspective wankery that came with it thanks to Anno.

I agree with Duckroll though, Honneamise is the one work Gainax did that utterly demands respect, such an awesome movie.

When I first saw Honneamise, I was so young, and anime was so new and "other" to me in general... I don't think I entirely grasped that it was set on some fantasy alternate earth. I know that's utterly ridiculous considering some of the world building that's in there.. but for all I knew Japan was like that :lol :lol

Gunbuster was ok. It was very awkward how they were trying to incorporate old robot show homeages and a little fanservice into an anime with such a story. The parts about the effects of time dilation were no doubt the best. The rest just didn't bode well with me.

The Wings of Honnêamise was definitely an awesome experience. The visuals are amazing and the story is a really cool alternate earth SF.

FLCL is definitely my favorite of their works though.
