"Study: Ads in Video Games Can Be Enticing"

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051205/ap_on_bi_ge/ads_in_games

...But a new study released Monday shows that when ads are on screen long enough and are highly integrated in the game, they can make players feel more positive about a product.

"There's a whole new variable here," Nielsen Senior Vice President Michael Dowling said about the persuasive aspect of in-game advertising.

Game publishers have been trying to find a standard measurement of awareness so they can charge in the same way that television and other advertising is sold.

"Here is this medium that has more consumption by males 18-34 than television today," said Robert A. Kotick, chairman and chief executive of Activision, based in Santa Monica. "So if you just measure awareness, we can do better."

Oh boy...

I really hope legislation is put in place to prevent ads for mcdonalds and toys etc being present in childrens games.

That covers Nintendo, what about the Microsoft and Sony. ZING

I only like advertising in games when it fits the game. (Banners in sports/racing games, for example).

Actually adds a bit of realism.

Ads during loading times? NO.

I'm a big fan of the toyota truck thingymagjiby in NBA 2K6, it makes me feel like I'm really participating in something worthwhile. MORE ADS PLZ

And who's leading the charge and probably footing the bill for this study? None other than Activision, I guess they didn't make enough money selling collector editions of Tony hawk and True crime for $60. Forget EA, if anyone is going to kill this industry with greed, it's Activision.

I can tolerate ads when they fit the game, such as little billboards with some company on it in a racing game... But if they start putting ads in during loading times or some dumbass gets the idea to sort of put 'commercials' in games where the game stops for a while and shows the ad, then I'm quitting gaming altogether. I know the last option seems far-fetched, but when it comes to money, you never know. Paying $50 is enough for a game. If I have to tolerate obtrusive advertising, I'm giving a farewell to the hobby. Don't be fucking greedy!

I love the unbiased source of this study. Reminds of the "New MS study reveals MS makes the best server OS!" kinda BS.

Actually Nielsen bases its whole existence on correctly tracking the impact/dollar worth of advertising, so this study IS troubling...

why do I have a sick feeling that somewhere in the echelons of EA there's a meeting going on right now about this study...

There's a difference between ads and product placement. If you're playing a Rally game and it says Castrol on your car, okay. If you're playing a horror game and come across a fridge with Pepsi in it, no problem. If you're playing a GTA clone and there are "real" ads on billboards or the radio, so be it.

That's totally different than "Loading...drink Mtn Dew!" or "You're signed in to Xbox Live...and here's a picture of the new Incubus album cover. Buy it now!"
