Stupid MS - why is the 'Start' program menu so damn hard to organize?!

Seriously.
Maybe I'm missing something, but this thing is designed really badly.

Some of the program-shortcuts are placed in "C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Start Menu\Programs" while others are placed in "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs". But BOTH are displayed in the actual menu.

I'm sure there's a logical explanation, but couldn't they make organising this thing as easily as um, Mozilla makes organizing bookmarks.

Does this bug anyone else? Are there workarounds? I know you can drag-and-drop from the actual menu itself, but that's tedious.

Supposedly, it's to differentiate between "programs shared by all users" and "only this user can use this"...
but i've found that the line is easily blurred.

also... Download Judi Wong's album!!! :D

Hah. I did! Listening to it now.
It is very good - hard to describe, but she's um different - I really like the very 1st song =)
edit: some songs are almost faye wong-ish, though not as opera-y.

It doesn't bug me as I tend to use multiple users and having access to common programs with all is a godsend

here are a few suggestions:

right click > sort by name
right click > delete
start > control panel > Add or Remove Programs > Uninstall Unused Programs

I like the Mandarin version (song 9)... the production makes it seem like a Taiwanese song.

personally she reminds me of Faye Wong + Amanda Marshall or something :)

urr... on-topic: windows sucks!

Um, can't you just right click on the start menu button and pick "Explore" and "Explore All Users" and then just drag and drop however you want?

Doesn't work for me because not all the displayed programs are in the "all users" directory. Some are in the "admin" directory...then Windows somehow merges the 2 directories to form the actual start menu.
They really should've created another view layer above these 2 directories that you could modify easily - preferably modify like Firefox bookmarks (with the ability to add separators - sweet!!). Crappy MS - I'm not a big fan of the Start menu anyway - I hope they refine it in Longhorn.

gg: heh, I mentioned Faye before I saw your post ^_^

?? I don't understand what's so hard?

Choosing "Explore" will show you all the programs in your personal Start Menu. If you're logged in as "Admin" then it will be in the Admin folder.

Choosing "Explore All Users" will show you all the programs every user on your computer will see in their Start Menu.

Just open up both the start menus and drag and drop away.

Firefox doesn't have the notion of shared bookmarks for all users on your computer, which is why this distinction is in Windows, and not in Firefox.

If you don't want any personal items, just drag and drop all the icons to the "All Users" start menu, and forget about the personal Start Menu. (You have to go back and clean out your personal start menu every once in a while though, cause some programs won't install to "All Users" even if you tell them to, which is kinda dumb, but out of the OS's control.)

Yeah. Seperators would have been nice, also being able to edit to order from the explorer would be nice too (to change the order you have to drag and drop directly on the start menu -- which does suck).

But no big deal for me, I just sort everything in alphabetical order.
