Mariah Carey just got engaged to this guy...
James-Packer.jpg

He's a Billionaire.

Now the first thing that springs to mind is "Golddigger", but wait, Mariah Carey is rich isn't she? So money can't be the attraction, can it?? xxx

Can a gun (of any kind) work if wet or submerged in water?

I was playing the Last of Us, Joel swims with all his gear on his backpack including shotguns and rifles. Also there's a cutscene where he is being held underwater and grasps for a pistol which is also under the water. After it's pulled out it's used to save him immediately
Iirc the glock 17 is famous for being waterproof but it's probably like in the video above. Tlou is a game ;)

I was at a running expo the other day, and at one of the booths the subject of carrying credit cards on your run came up. The vendor flashed a compact RFID-blocking hard case that she uses when she runs and travels.

The thing is hers was clear, but all the ones I can find on Amazon are solid colors or tacky prints. Any idea where I might be able to find one like she had?

Here's my stupid question, thanks in advance.
Those power cables that you use to power monitors and power supplies, does it matter if you mix them up?

These
power_20cable_202_original.jpg

I have some that say they are rated to 60C temp, others to 105C, does it matter which I use? I'm trying to figure out if I blew up my 24" monitor by using the wrong type of power cable... I plugged it in and turned it on after it was stored away for a while, and I heard a distinct POP and a burnt smell when I pressed the power button and it shut off, dead. I always thought if the plug fits, I can use it... right?

Short answer: No. The device is going to try to pull the same amount of power regardless of what kind of cable is plugged in. It could be possible under certain circumstances for a cable to melt/burn out/catch fire if you tried to pull more power across it than it's rated for, but you'd never ruin your monitor doing something like that.

So, my GF accidentally deleted a bunch of photos from her Verizon S4 and I'm struggling to find an easy solution to recover them that doesn't cost money and doesn't require rooting.

Why isn't there a recycling bin equivalent on smart phones yet? Why are all avenues of recovery programs that cost money or apps that are actually just scam/malware?

If rooting is the only reliable option, how do I go about doing it for Verizon Galaxy S4. I rooted my S3 years ago, but it was a weekend long affair of nail-biting tension of fear for fucking it up.

I have some old clothes and table/kitchen wares I want to donate away, what's the best place to do so? Redcross? Salvation Army? local homeless shelter?

So I'm looking up Micro SD prices on eBay and notice an absurd discrepancy in prices for 256 GB cards. They range anywhere in between 15 dollars and 300. What's the explanation here? Are the other cards vastly slower to the point of borderline useless, are the 15 dollar ones just scams? Looking to get one for the Surface Pro I just bought.

There's lots of bootleg Micro SD cards on eBay. Some that says that they're a certain size is actually smaller as well, just faked to show a bigger size when inserted into a device. Better off buying from trusted online stores.

Just wanted to get a better sense of the prices, but I did get my 64 GB Vita Memory Card on there and in that case it was both a cheaper and more convenient option to go that route as those cards were never released here so I was partially considering it.

Don't think anybody has bothered making fake PS Vita memory cards though.

How many generations does it take for the human body to adapt and evolve its genetics?

Example: If I come from a long line of people that always lived at sea level and then I decided to move to a mountain in Colorado that is well above sea level then how many generations would it take for my descendants to start being born better predisposed to the higher altitude and thinner air?

There is no fixed number.

Two factors are involved. 1) genetic change (e.g. a random mutation) and 2) selective pressure. Random mutations happen all the time but only changes in eggs/sperm will be transferred to the next generation. There is no strong selective pressure for survival at high altitudes since most humans will do just fine there without any changes to their genome.

Thanks. Can strong selective pressure actually force a mutation over a period of time?

No, it cannot force a mutation to occur but it will help an organism to retain a beneficial mutation. If a mutation is beneficial or not depends on the environment, and environments change over time.

Bacteria acquiring resistance against antibiotics is a common example of how organisms can change when they are introduced to a hostile environment.

Could a professional voice coach teach me to sing sort of like Aaron Neville or Barry Gibb? I can't sing at all currently.

I'm willing to do whatever it takes.

There is only one way to find out. Start with learning the basics. You need to keep up with regular practice. Once you have a solid foundation then can try to imitate other vocalists.

If someone is in a coma and they wake up-do they feel refreshed or tired?
First, there needs to be an understanding that a coma is most likely the result of a traumatic brain injury and therefore, the outcome for coma and vegetative state depends on the cause, location, severity and extent of neurological damage. Following this, if people are to actually wake up from a coma, there is usually extensive damage to their bodies or brains; they may start waking up from a coma for perhaps only minutes a day to a few hours to fully functioning.

Additionally, depending on how long a coma lasts, muscle atrophy is very likely. People who wake up from comas typically need physical therapy when they start to stay awake and become semi-mobile again. If a coma is medically induced, there is usually a time period for the anesthetics to clear out of the body. An article by Pain and Lalou (2009) states that the cognitive dysfunctions observed in patients after anesthesia are due not only to the effects of but also to the surgery, the disease requiring surgery, and post-operative treatment. Initial cognitive recovery from anesthetic agents is usually fast, from several hours to several days, but can be delayed by postoperative treatment (analgesia, for example) that have deleterious cognitive effects. During the initial period after surgery, acute impairment of cognitive functions is seen in some patients at risk (major surgery, aged patients, brain sensitivity, or sepsis), specifically transitory (1-3 days in most cases) postoperative delirium.

Anyone here have the Star Wars Blu-ray steelbooks? Wondering if they're worth it, or at least the original trilogy. My GF has the full collection on DVD but I don't have anything and saw they were on offer, curious if I should bite or if I should just get the steelbook-less Blu-ray collection instead if I want them.

Do Europeans have Kraft American singles to use for grilled cheese? If so, does it have another name? Or is American cheese an American thing?

Is anyone else so lazy that they cant be bothered to clap with both hands so you just slap your thigh instead?

Hah yes, I do that sometimes. Like 95% of the time, I just half ass my claps. I sorta do the motion but really there's very little, if any, sound coming out.

I said yes to attending an interview for a job but only now realised how far away it is. I don't drive so if I was theoretically to get the job I'd have to spend a ridiculous amount of time travelling to and from and I can't do it, but I thought it was closer until I actually had a check. What's the best way to tell the place that I can't attend (and make it clear that I mean the place is too far away), should I just come out with it directly?

Honesty is generally the best approach, although you don't have to admit that you didn't look up the location of the office. You could tell them that you have considered the company, but decided that you don't want to spend that much time commuting.

Thanks, that sounds like a good idea. Still feel like a fool for not checking before but I suppose if you're applying for loads every day you tend to gloss over some stuff.

Apologies for the bump.

I'm heading to Edinburgh tomorrow for the first time for a few days, any suggestions about travelling and places to go? The only time we plan to get a bus is when we head to the zoo on a Lothian bus, are all the fares (regardless of how far you're going) the same? The website suggests that just I'd like to be sure I have it well planned. We're staying about 10 minutes from Haymarket and about 15 from Prices Street so we seem to be at a decent distance from some central areas, just curious about the rest.

Hey guys, I don't really know where else to look so my question is is it possible to have both my headphones and speakers plugged into my motherboard through the back ports? I want to be able to switch between them but I don't want to use my front ports on my computer. When I tried plugging them in I could only get one to work at a time. Is there anyway to get it so my computer recognizes both and allows me to switch between which ones I want for the default?

So looking for the meme picture that gaf uses sometimes but I don't know the name:

3 panel comic:

First panel: 3 colored dots.
2nd panel: 3 lines though those dots
3rd panel: idiot making a graph

And that is it.

Please someone can you find me the meme or the name of it?
Thanks :)

Google image search neogaf making a graph. That brought it up

I've been having Internet connectivity problems for the past week. Some sites load relatively fine, while others just load incredibly slowly or not at all. Same goes for other services. For example, Star Trek Online was practically unplayable, but I could run torrents, albeit not at my typical not-so-fast DSL speeds. I tried downloading some movies to my Google Play account on my phone, and it wouldn't even get past 0.0MB. GAF loads sort of OK. Yahoo and Gmail barely load at all. The Verizon speed test they kept trying to make me use wouldn't load at all tonight.

I've already gone through the annoying tech support gamut of tests tonight, but they constantly told me they're getting a strong signal to my modem, and they're sending a tech out tomorrow (after two hours on the phone). Is there really anything that would cause such issues on my end? I figure if there was an issue with my wiring or network box, it would consistently kill all aspects of my connection. Shouldn't something like that be at the CO or farther out?
