Howdy folks. I'm here to spread the good word: Subrosa's new album comes out on 8/26, and everyone should check it out.
Subrosa is a doom metal band from Salt Lake City that features two electric violins as well as the typical dramatic guitar, bass, and drums. They're often described as a mix of chamber music and doom metal, which is fairly accurate I guess - they play long, movement-based pieces that layer and build and change from quiet, moody violin to booming, grandiose metal. The singer has a very commanding voice and her vocals are always put front and center. If you want to hear some of their previous work, check these tracks out:
The Usher
Beneath the Crown
Cosey Mo
Sold? Cool! Their new album builds on this sound. It's loosely based on a Russian dystopian sci fi novel called We, by Yevgeny Zamayatin. The tracks are even longer, denser, and full of more discrete movements, and the songwriting has evolved to more of an operatic, narrative style that shifts perspectives. A couple of pieces here practically sound like villain monologues (like Wound of the Warden). Weird connection to make, but fans of the Protomen might dig this.
Anyway, I just wanted to evangelize about one of my favorite bands. Here's the tracklist and some of the released tracks.
1. Despair is a Siren
2. Wound of the Warden
3. Black Majesty
4. Il Cappio
5. Killing Rapture
6. Troubled Cells
