Have to say, after finish watching this show, I go around the web to see what other people impression of this show and see how they analyze it. Also, after let it sink it a bit, I will have to say this show might become one of my favourite show I have watch in my collection. They're other great show I have watch as of now but this show take it one step further in my opinion. I guess I will break it down in my small impression about this show.
The story of Wolf Rain takes place in a world where it used to have a very rich society in history and culture. Unfortunately, for some reason, something have happened and this rich society is slowly crumble down to the point where the survivor in this world is just trying to stay alive. They're two type of class in this world, the noble (think of them as the wealthy elite) and the commoner (people who is trying to stay alive in this dark bleak word). They don't push too much about what is happening to the world till quarter way of the show. This help the show quite a bit as it focus more into the characters you will be following in the show. You're following a main character name Kiba, who is a wolf but can change into a human when needed to in disguise. His main mission in the entire show was to find paradise which the wolf can go to and live in peace. Along the way, he got pick up by three other wolf which he meet at the beginning of the show (Hige, Toboe, & Tsume). All have different personality but somehow join together as a pack of wolf to find this new place of paradise. Along the way, they will be secondary characters in the show who will be following range from the wolf hunter who you meet in the 1st episode who hunt down wolf, a female scientist who is interested in the wolf story, a mysterious girl who have the power to show the wolf the paradise, to a nobleman who want to get to paradise as a way to help his lover and his dark past.
For the story, they don't really push the detail on the audience or try to explain it. It make the audience to try to look into the finer detail of the back-story. This back story of why wolves are considered by the nobles are divine. Why the nobles feel like they're different from the common people. Also, what just happened 200 years ago which cause the world from the most technological to just barely struggle to stay alive. The show also cross references religious idea and mythologies to reveal a incorporated theme. The wolves in the story have to face different type of trials like despair, distrust, confusion, and the false paradise which could offer joy for their individuality. While at the same time, the human have to struggle with their own type of trials like denial, preferring comfort than facing the truth of what will happened to them, and many more. In the way, the writer of Wolf Rain did something that you don't see too often in most anime show. It make you think as you watch the show without trying to force all the philosophy and region stuff into your mouth.
One of the bigger strength from Wolf Rain is the character development from almost all the main and secondary characters in this show. At the beginning when you're introduce the four main wolf, they have a very limited personalities on them but just enough so you have an idea of what they are. For Kiba, he have a strong personalities while Hige have a playful tone and know how to function in the human society. For Toboe, a shy who like to help up everyone while Tsume, have a rough self reliant tone and don't give a rat of anyone. As you process during the show, they development start to get complex and detail. You start to understand they past life and see how they personalities change to the point where all start to work together as a pack. Even in trouble time where mistrust is starting to seep into the wolf pack, all still work together as a team and will protect each other. You also feel it during the show which make you wish those pack of wolf will eventually found the paradise they always wanted for.
This isn't stop at the main four characters, the secondary characters also have a much detail and complex personalities. From the wolf hunter who hunt down wolf who eventually accept them, to the female scientist who manage to rekindle the love of her divorce husband as both have change during the show as they realize what will happened to the world. All of this will get very emotional as you start watch the last four episodes as all the characters you follow during the show will have a tragic end even though you wish all of them have a good ending. But this tragic ending and how strong the character development between all the major and secondary character make the ending of the show even more powerful for the audience when they watch it that it will stay in you after you finish watching the show.
The music soundtrack from this show might be one of the best soundtrack I have heard for a long while. Not surprising as it was composed by Yoko Kanno. I guess most fans here know her now as she make quite a bit good music but this show might be one of her best work. Almost all the music used in this show are beautiful and make the emotional scene very powerful when need to be while at the same time, never overwhelms the story when used during the show. Another good things from this show soundtrack is how nice to listening the music outside of the anime. The orchestration score is great to listen to and (in my opinion) sound like a soundtrack from a movie as it doesn't have those anime soundtrack feel you hear from other anime show. Not that it's a bad thing but you can play this at work and most people don't mind the music at all.
Something I don't talk about much in my impression is the dubbing. Most of the time, I watch my anime in Japanese dub as this is how it was shown in Japan. Once a while I will try to rewatch certain show in English dub and well...it always come in mix result like Spice and Wolf have a decent Eng dub while Love Hina should only watch in Japanese dub. For Wolf Rain, the English dub might be one of the best dub I have listen to after Spice and Wolf and got to say, it might be the best way to watch this show. Literally, every voice actors who voices all the main and secondary characters and even characters who are there for five minutes in the show goes one step beyond what is needed when playing their roles.
Overall, I would say this. Wolf Rain is one of the most rewarding show I have watch for a while. Not only it's entrainment to watch but it's have quite a few strong quality trait which push the show better. This strength and how mature the story is make me want to recommend this show to anyone who didn't watch it yet. Also, do try to go in with a clean slate without any expectation as this will help you enjoy the show even more like I did when watching it.
