Summer Anime 2015 |OT2| !? Love Live is not real!

Has there ever been a modern anime with colourful moe character designs that's actually had a really good, compelling story?

Like, the only thing that comes to mind when I think of something like that is Madoka Magica. It can't be only one, can it?

Well first you need to define what the hell "colourful moe character designs" are. Good luck with finding something that isn't completely arbitrary.

Once you got past the excruciating first 20 minutes of School Live Ep 1, I thought everything I had seen of the show so far (through episode 4 or 5 I don't quite recall) was legit good. I had been meaning to pick it back up but everything I'm reading is depressing me :(

Charapedia (10,000 readers in Japan) listed their favorite busty characters. Most of the voters were older males.

Aggregate:

Male:

Female:

http://www.crunchyroll.com/anime-news/2015/09/03/japanese-fans-name-their-favorite-busty-anime-girls

I don't recognize half+ the women on that list and I know its still wrong. Fujiko and Hancock are way too low for example and that chick with no spine from Haruhi is way too high (among other massive errors on the list - fucking LOL at Leafa). I feel Nami deserves a high spot but I dunno if Id' put her as high as others. Mami is cool but mostly because she's a good character in a good show and not because her design is really something to be celebrated. I know next to shit about Love Live but I can at least concede Nozomi because he has a character design that is cute without delving too close into uber moe/creep town that many of these other characters fall into. Also way too many high school aged characters and not enough actual grown ass women. Needs more the Major, Balsa, Yoko (flawed but still better than many on that list), etc.

I mean it does a brilliant job of delivering physics defying breasts to your TV screen does it not? I don't think most are going to that show expecting a nuanced and elaborate critique of the human condition and what we do and become during our darkest hours.

I'm talking about the kind of character design that you normally find in slice-of-life shows that comprise of a mostly female cast. Like Love Live!, Hidamari Sketch, and Kiniro Mosaic to name a few.

As for "good, compelling story", I mean well, exactly that. Something where you care about what the characters are going through. Something that leaves you on the edge of your seat to find out what happens next. That sort of thing.

Ez. Shirobako. Next!

Yeah, something like that!

Does Non Non Biyori count? It doesnt really have a story but I get really invested into each of the characters and the event-of-the-moment.

Yeeeeeeesss

Well. Umi's bitchslap in Love Live left me on the edge of my seat so that counts!

Sore ga Seiyu is kinda like Shirobako so that probably counts, whether it's good is a bit debatable though.

Hibike Euphonium would be my best answer.

The OVA will make you appreciate the original series more once you get to it.

I watched Umaru this week and it had four good/compelling stories in one episode. This is better than almost all novels that only have one good/compelling story. 4>1. Mathematics favor Umaru.

It's true!

My friends and I made a drinking game out of that anime once.

The night did not end well.

All this talk of High School of the Dead makes me sad that the manga seems to be on eternal hiatus. The anime also makes me sad, because it ignored few of the things that elevates the manga to higher levels that it might appear at a first glance.

And instead we get the matrix boobs. I do admit that the scene in question is funny as hell if taken just as it is.

I still haven't actually watched Shirobako.

You monster.

Most slice of life shows don't usually try and go for a huge overarching story or anything of the sort so that's kind of pointless.

Does Non Non Biyori count? It doesnt really have a story but I get really invested into each of the characters and the event-of-the-moment.

Nonononono. I'm not talking about shows that are specifically slice of life.

I'm talking about the kind of shows that have themes, character arcs, and world-building. I mean, you can still have that in a slice of life show, but what about genres other than that?

The point is, can a show have those female character designs you'd normally find in those specific slice of life shows, and still tell a meaningful story that has themes, character arcs, world-building, etc that can be taken seriously?

Shows like Madoka Magica and Shirobako say yes.

Catching up on - The Six Braves

Adelt & Hans broship/bromance was great in action <3 Kind of disappointed at how easily Maura seems to be browbeating Hans back to her side though. She's basically shouting "I'm right because reasons" and he's folding like a bad hand at a poker table. Also disappointed that Charmot didn't get a better/more thorough beatdown. She has like no reading qualities as a character. Also obligatory complaints about shitty CGI, Flemy should get over herself and Bunny & her Butler Knight haven't really been doing much of all lately.

Catching up on - Food Wars

It is very easy to binge watch this show and I consider that a good thing. Spice Guy is probably the best rival Soma has had yet after his own father. Left a great impression already and he's only been around for a short bit. Suave, smart, threatening but not an unjustifiable douchey asshole with a stick up his own ass like some others (*cough* Erina *cough*) nor a "joke" character with joke attributes (*cough* Isami and Miku *cough*).

I'm also liking that Hinako is coming into her own as a real character and not just some empty roadie. She stepped the fuck up. She still needs more time to further remove her lips from Erina's "lips" though - I'm hoping she "breaks free" at some point. Not sure what to make of Ringu girl. Is her bit over or does she come back into play later in the manga? Also hard to imagine something smelling so bad but tasting so good given how strongly the senses of smell and taste are linked.

Megumi is in a weird place because it looked like she was slipping back into her bad habits but then she stepped up to the plate in the recent prelims. Is that going to be her "thing" moving forward? An endless cycle of moments of growth followed by falling back into crippling insecurity and so on or does she actually have a forward trajectory with regards to her confidence and skills moving forward?

Finally Hojo fells like a character the author wasn't sure what to do with. It's hard to take miss "I don't need no man, I'm a strong independent woman" seriously whilst the camera is glued to her large, bouncing breasts and her firm, shapely ass. At least with Miku it seems "in character" (though I REALLY wish she would drop the tsundere act. Either woman up and try to make a move on Soma because you think he's hot or ignore him if you don't care about him. Anime needs more confident women and it seems that should be the write way to write Miku). With Hojo, it feels conflicting. Like I'm not saying she can't be a babe but the character design and her personality and motivations as discerned so far seem at odds with each other enough that it hurts my suspension of disbelief.

Sora no Woto?

Not watched it though so I dunno :p

Future spoilers -
The smelly cooking girl doesn't disappear completely. Neither does Hojo but they are sidelined.

This is sufficiently vague enough to be meaningless. I suppose moe, just like porn, is something "I know it when I see it."
Or it's a useless buzzword.

Maybe I should give Umaru another chance.

The OVA is the only thing I watched of AO and I can vouch for its quality.

Big Hero 6

Was there anything in this storyline that had anything to do with Japanese culture? I mean, there were a few things in the setting that showed that they did at least the tiniest bit of location scouting, but nothing that said to me that there was any 'real' Japanese influence on this movie. I mean, I suppose you could make the Super Sentai connection, but even then there's nothing much that separates this from just being like Teen Titans.

I know the whole source material thing prevents it from just being set in straight up San Francisco, but if you say the movie is taking place in a blend of San Francisco and Tokyo, then the least they could have done was make it more than just a few shout-outs to a few Japanese-y things.

I dunno. Maybe I've watched too much anime. But nothing about this movie really said to me that the blended setting was needed.

Maybe if it had been done in traditional animation I wouldn't be so huffy about it.

5/10

Yeah think I might give Umaru another chance too. Watched 2 episodes and read about 20 chapters of the manga and didn't really like either but people seem to like it a lot.

Boobs dodging a bullet was brilliant, nothing will ever top THAT.
I was planning to watch the show for stupid shit like that, but I couldn't stand the pantyshots during burtal deathscene in the first episode.

Anyway, I watch Adolescence of Utena.
After watching this movie I have 1 question
How expansive is an Utena car insurance?
Ok,now seriously: The movie was really good.
Apperently the movie is supposted to be a lose retellling of the orginal story.
Well, this got to be the losest retelling I have ever seen, because the plots of both series are nothing alike.Having said that, the themes are very similar
Just like the series is there is tons of symbolism and quite a few things require interpretation inorder to understand what's going on.
Personaily I didn't really have too much trouble to understand what was going on.
Although, you should probably watch the series before the movie, otherwise you might be a bit lost at certain points of the movie.

The animation is this movie is amazing. For instance it's has tons of beautiful and/or interesting shots.
The music is just as good. Most songs are new version of songs from the TV series, which is fine, because they are stil awesome.

Also, while watching the latest episode Snow White with the Red Hair , I just realised how much I'm in the mood for a romance anime right now.
Guess that means it's finally time to watch Clannad: After Story.

Eureka 7 ep. 3-6:
Lots of happenings really quick that puts him with that fishy non government agency. These types of companies always have something dubious going one behind the scenes... MC is really young, but a pretty good overall with his strenght and resolve. The action sequences they show are pretty good, but that flashback at eht beginning of ep.6 really felt out of place, but as was mentioned above, I'm sure that crazy woman and that scene will all make sense much later. Good stuff overall so far..

Wait a minute... I don't remember this, are you sure you're watching the right one?

E7 was my very first complete thinpak collection purchase. The 50 episodes were quite a ride, and the music was amazing at the right moments. I'm amazed you've never seen this before given how you sped through a lot of shows lol.

The dub was perfect. Lots of good, lots of OMG get outta here, pretty much almost everyone fit their characters.

The OVA will make you appreciate the original series more once you get to it.

What OVA?

Maturity, bitches.
Thread could use more memes.

The Japanese animated cartoon that you are most fond of is of the same quality as human faeces. You heard me correctly, it is poop, turd, crap, dung, the very excrement of society itself.

Free!, Tsuritama, Kimi to Boku, if we use my definition of colorful moe character designs.

Oh I guess Id also include Il Sole Penetra le Illusioni - Day Break Illusion, the superior take on the Madoka Magica ideal.

Just finish episode 9 for Ghost Stories and yea, the famous scene of the rabbit. I am starting to like the show a bit more now than in the beginning.

AO is dumb and doesn't spoil anything huge about the original, at least not until later on, and even then it's not huge, and also it's dumb.

So just watch the original, knowing that you've been saved.

AO fixed many of the problems with E7. Characters didnt make really dumb decisions in the midst of action
I still dont understand why one would choose to get pregnant in the middle of a war or run away from their duties or babysit kids taking them to the theater of war
, the antagonists of AO was really well defined and actually believable instead of being over the top and inhuman like in E7, and lastly we didnt have a really annoying romantic interest that kept getting in the way of good storytelling.

Additionally, AO had a very fantastic OST. I still listen to it these days as its just the memorable and great to work to.

And who could say no to Hemenway?

Just finished binge watching this on crunchyroll after seeing this recommended in this thread. Aside from a few minor grips, it's really solid.
They go back to the well on the ol' accidental boob grab gag a bit too much and some of the mid-series episodes, like the cultural festival were kinda filler-ish. But the core ghost story was well done. I'm a sucker for ghost stories where the ghost is not inherently evil or malevolent, and they address this wonderfully well with Yuuko's shadow. The last episode was beautifully done with her fading away after the mystery is solves, which is what I would want out of a tragic ghost romance. However, the last minute runback of having her remain because of her love for him is the one other point that doesn't work for me. I thought it was a nice parallel that he needed to accept that she would fade away just as she had to accept her dark side and would have preferred if in the end he would remember her but would move on with his life (and get with one of the other girls).
Aside from that, it was really satisfying.

Your avatar makes this perfect.

I watched some of AO and dropped it somewhere in the middle. I tried multiple times to continue but I still haven't finished it. And I can't remember ANYTHING besides the name of the main character being Ao, he has a childhoof friend and there is a blonde girl. And it has mechs.
I think I watched the movie of the original Eureka 7 as well, but I can't remember anything of it either.
I think I'm safe.
