Didn't know about that Thunderbolt show. I might check it out after seeing that webm on the other page lol. Have there been any other puppet/stop motion anime?
There was a show in the 80's called X-Bomber, which was contemporary with Gerry Andersons Terrahawks and used similar rod-puppets to what was used on that show. That series claim-to-fame was that Go Nagai was involved in the project, and did a bunch of design work for it.
The show itself was a SF space opera giant robot show, so aside from the puppets it also occasionally had some guy-in-a-suit-smashing-stuff action. Also, the model for the X-Bomber was really cool. Plot is kind of a Yamato knock-off, to be honest.
The show itself actually ended up getting dubbed for UK TV, under the title Star Fleet, where it ended up being surprisingly popular (and is also the version I've seen - its out on DVD here now, and Discotek announced they are releasing it in the US). Another weird claim-to-fame is that Queen guitarist Brian May put together a
supergroup to record a cover of it's UK ending theme after his kids got him into the show.
The shows great, though the dubs pronunciation of Shiro as "Shy-Row" will probably drive people insane.
