SUMMER GAME FEST: Geoff's Hype Trailer

So much Expedition 33 here...

It's going to sweep at the end of the year. Get used to it lol.
You get me wrong friendo - I love Expedition 33, and it absolutely deserves all the game of the year awards it's going to get.

But usually Summer Game Fest is all about new games coming out this summer and beyond, so it's weird seeing it included here because it's already released. For reference, here are all the games announced during last year's Summer Game Fest

Maybe we're getting story DLC?

Whatever happened to that weird Korean game with the little kids roller-skating, flying with umbrellas and all that crazy shit he showed off years ago?

Yeah the trailer as a whole has a lot of footage from games that have come out already. I'm sure they'll have a lot of ne announcements.

I've clocked around 12 hours atm, and the game of course is by no means bad or anything. However, I can't quite understand the hype around it. Yes, it's good, but a masterpiece? No way. I wouldn't even put it in the same tier as a MHW, RE4R or FF7R.
I've Platinum'd the game and done 1 NG+ run. And I get what you're saying. Usual UE5 graphical warts aside though, the game is very competently made. I actually preferred it over FF7Rebirth. It feels more like Final Fantasy than Rebirth.

The hype is what's going to carry it to a lot of wins at award shows.

The part that I think will be undeniable, though, is the music.

This should have had more games that are already announced and coming soon, as a reminder, rather than showcasing a game or two that already released.

Other than that this is a good first try at a hype reel.

The trailer also had:
Doom The Dark Ages - Already out
Kingdom Come 2 - Already out
South of Midnight - Already out

Its just a mix of different cool shit of 2025, no need the hype trailer is what is going to be shown on the night.

Not when Death Stranding 2 is just around the corner. Its not sweeping anything lol
That could be a hit too. I think what Expedition 33 has over Death Stranding 2 is that it's a new experience. DS2, so far at least, looks like more of the same with refined systems. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out at the end of the year though.

Honestly refined systems is all it needed. But yeah we'll see how it plays out

Its probably gonna get a ton of nominations but I dont think it wins as many as people think it will.
Death Stranding 1 didnt even win when it was a "fresh" experience and had Kojima hype behind it.

Best Music, RPG, new IP, art direction and best overall game, among others. It's gonna win in many categories.

I like DS2 a lot but there's no way its beating 33. I'd rather say something like Crimson Desert, which is another beastly game yet to release.

Feels like a completely unnecessary trailer showing either things that were obviously going to be shown or games already released.

Not sure what the point was.

DokeV? Pearl Abyss is making that and they seem to be focusing on Crimson Desert. I haven't seen anything about Dokev since the trailer, only conjecture.

Were people here expecting to see new shit in a trailer for the show? Isn't that what the show is for? Like I get not being confident in it being good, but I don't understand the complaints here.

Like were y'all expecting a Bloodborne 2 logo and action clip in the hype trailer or something?

There are like five games total featured here and the trailer just relentlessly cuts between them for two and a half minutes. If anything I'm less hyped than I was before I watched it.

Death Stranding did have most GOTY wins that year, though.

The hype trailer is mostly games that already came out. So I wonder:

Are any of those coming to new platforms? Like Expedition 33 coming to Switch 2? South of Midnight coming to PS5?

Maybe they are showing them because they'll be on sale during the Summer Game Fest? They usually have a Sale to coincide with the event, so maybe those games are part of that.

Here's my annual "fingers crossed" for Little Devil Inside

As well it should.

With Metroid Prime 4 taking best Adventure Game, of course.

I liked this idea, I agree with your point that he can't show anything secret/new, and I think he can improve it going forward, however the problem isn't specifically with games already shown, it's with games already released. Here was another showcase that happened over a month ago, where they showed a highlight reel of indies that were already revealed, but coming soon.

This accomplishes two things.
  • To remind gamers of what's on the horizon with games that were already revealed
  • To imply that they will have more to show of these games

When comparing this with Geoff's hype trailer, the issue is that this SGF trailer is showing games that are already in stores and playable, when he could be showing quick snippets of games that were revealed last year or during the TGAs, to remind the audience of what's coming up soon.

Is it worth playing before DS2's release at the end of the month?
Yes, if you can get through a meaty open world game of over 60 hours in just a month and want more afterwards. But otherwise? Go ahead to DS2 and play the DS1 recap that will be available on the game's menu, you would also go completely in blind for the gameplay loop, so it will be less tiring compared to playing these two big games back to back.

I dont think we ever gonna see Bloodborne 2 since its clear FROM has moved on from that IP.

Unless Sony give it to other developers to make which at that point I have no interest in it.
