Triple-jump on the platform in front of the pyramid, get the winged cap, fly anywhere you want/manage.
That first star is by far the easiest to get on that map, all you have to do is fly through the bird then go and grab it.

Got there in the end - now have 3 of the 6 stars there. In the end I lured flying red prick chap to the petrol station forecourt so I could bounce on his head and fly onto the roof to get the wing cap. The bird proved as easy as you said, though I took a different route, the path with the boxes moving along, which took me in behind the pillar, from which it was an easy leap up and then as you say just jump through the bird to get the star which was thankfully quite helpfully placed.

Was going for the 2nd star at the top of the pyramid, but couldn’t get high enough but I spotted a door lower down which I thought might give me a route up there. Turned out it took me to an internal area which led to a different star. That bit was actually really fun.

Quite a few levels have areas like that.

I'm really jealous I can't experience SM64 for the first time again. I know all Stars by memory and finished a 120 Star in about 10 hours. Still a great time though.

So in case anyone is having trouble with 100 coins in TTC, absolutely do it with the clock stopped. You have to get through a kind of bullshit blind wall jump to make it, but you obviously get the red coins much easier.

You don’t need the red coins there are some more coins in a ? block at the top. You can simply drop yourself at the middle of the clock hand. That’s said, I failed to do the blind wall jump and couldn’t go up without the moving platforms.

That blind wall is very 50/50, I died once with Mario grabbing the ledge and letting go for whatever reason. That level is filled with fuckery, there's an invisible wall near the first treadmill that has killed me multiple times since I was a kid.

Stand tall on four pillars. What an absolute cunt. That level has caused so many game over screens I can see the Switch going flying before long.

Has this vid been posted here yet? I like this, it's good stuff. I think at some level others may have felt the same, at least at a subconscious level?

I miss Bowser being kinda creepy from Mario 1 to 64. They made him too cuddly later. And his modern voice with the Grr Grumble Grumble talk doesn't work for me. I preferred his "voice" in 64 and MK64.

Plus Mario 64 was going for a hyper, virtual reality thing. Odyssey kinda tried to bring it back with some of the more realistic texturing on things.

And it also goes back to that Beyond The Mind's Eye stuff I posted earlier.

I just love how 3D Mario 64 is. Gameplay was about the analog, moving in a 3D space, etc. Love the look the Gourad shading (or the lighting on the walls?) gave off too. They should bring back that look, it would be so cool.

I love games that are about the technology being advanced/ahead of its time. Unreal, Doom 3, Half Life 2 come to mind as well. They're almost tech demo games!

Edit: Oops forgot to post the vid lol

Bought his for my son the other day, he just told me that it's awesome and he loves it. Referring to Galaxy, which he was playing at the time.

I was just thinking.
I was born in 85 so there are a lot of people out there that played Super Mario Bros originally in 1985 and are still fans now 35 years later.

There are also young kids now that are playing Galaxy for the first time. This game will be their 'nostalgia' in 35 years time! Crazy how far Mario has come and now he will likely live on.

Galaxy is such a drug. Impossible to put down. Everything is so simple, yet so satisfying. Wanted to do a couple galaxies today, ended session with 42 stars and 3 observatories done (albeit not completed).

The motion control levels feel a thousand times better with the Joycon. On the Wii that manta circuit and the ball level took me a while, on Switch I did the former first try and the latter second try. The level with the bubble was also a breeze. No problems with getting starbits, either. The Joycon needs recalibrating quite often, but that’s hardly a nuisance.

I love how 64 and Galaxy give away extra lives quite easily, allowing you to experiment. Sunshine is so stingy with extra lives. Another reason why Sunshine is the black sheep of 3D Mario.

I was just thinking about that yesterday. There are kids who weren't even born when Galaxy came out, who are going to play it on this compilation and be like 'this is amaaaaazzzziiinnnng'

Then they're going to play 64 and wonder why the controls suck.

If they are smart kids they will hopefully appreciate how far things have advanced lol

Well, I don't think the character designs ever creeped me out but I did always wonder as a teenager what that town in the background of Wet-Dry World was. Or what was on the Islands in the distance of Peach's castle. The whole game certainly gave you a feeling of being alone, unlike Sunshine. And yeah, I searched for hours for an enemy resembling the fire level painting in that level, thinking I clearly must have missed something.

I can give you a quasi-answer (that you may know already? Not sure).

Being their first 3D game, Nintendo leaned on asset packs. A few of the textures are apparently real things and places. Check out the Did You Know Gamings on Mario 64, if you ever want to see more of this stuff — it’s really cool.

That Mario 64 Is A Disturbing Game video is silly.

I definitely will admit that things were creepier back then, between the weird visuals, some of Nintendo’s odd decisions (the red and black eyes are creepy), and the age. But this guy sounds like he experienced every second of Super Mario 64 as a Silent Hill game.

The game that really got me was Ocarina. Forest Temple and Shadow Temple. The unsettling music, story cues, that weird early 3D nature, things suddenly grabbing you out of nowhere, etc. etc. etc., made me almost to scared to get through them.

I do like how Nintendo put creepier elements in these children’s games (more an apt description for 64) though. It’s so... not sanitized? Like everything is today. I like that they assumed children could actually handle anything other than smiley goodness, and put all sorts of things in for them to enjoy, even a bit of scariness. Which is how it used to be across all of entertainment.

Forest Temple remains to this day the most unsettling location I've ever played through. It helps that I was a kid lol but the mood of that place is unreal and the song is pitch perfect:

That place legit feels cursed.

100% this. Dear God, that's just the right amount of creepy.

Just going to throw in my port-begging for the 3DS version of OOT on Switch next year. That game does not deserve to be stuck on an uncomfortable portable. Which is also probably why I played about 5 minutes of MM 3D before realizing I can't stand playing that on a cramped handheld.

But those versions are far and away better than the N64 originals.

This would probably never happen, but it would be pretty badass if we got both the N64 originals (with a steadier frame rate) and the 3DS remakes. That would be an awesome package because I don't think the remakes make the originals irrelevant. If we got both version, both would be preserved and we'd get the ultimate package of this awesome duology.

That entire area and level was the perfect next step above the
three dungeons in which Link would gather the three Spiritual Stones. The Forest Temple is the definition of classic

Any version of OOT that isn't the original run with the original Fire Temple music is fucking bastardized in my eyes.

I hate that that entire temple is completely tainted thanks to that shit censor job they did.

Trying to get the red coins from the mushrooms on Tall Tall Mountain. I keep dying but I don’t mind every time I come back I love jumping through this level even more. That level is a master class in platforming.

Imo 64 is the hardest of the three, if we are talking all stars. Thankfully it is almost the most fun to control.

There's a ton of 1-ups lying around that level (including one behind you at the very start.) I died getting the red coins a decent number of times but I grabbed 1-ups before trying the tricky reds so it was a net gain in lives each time I attempted it.

About 30 shines into SMS, and I have a question: Every single time I exit a level the hub world camera focuses in on the Noki Bay entrance (the statue with the light shining down), as if it thinks I need to know about it. I have finished all the shines in that level, and it still doesn't go away. It's really annoying.

Is this a known bug, and can I do anything about it?

(Haven't played SMS in many years, so I don't remember if it was always like this.)

Finally beat Standing Tall On All Four Pillars. I lost a LOT of lives doing that. Horrible level, so I think I’ll skip the 8 coins and go straight to Dire Dire Docks.

Looks like the pins are already out of stock. Bullshit. I've had all the challenges done for two weeks. Been waiting for 9/29 as instructed on NoA customer service, and on the website. It's not even the 29th yet and it's already toast.

Got the 120 stars in Galaxy, too. For at least a week I think I’ll turn on my Switch just for the time it takes to get the daily tickets in Tetris 99, lol.

What a game, what a game! That last galaxy with the lava is great, and the music as well. Too bad those last 15 stars in the post-game kinda suck. It’s like the devs wanted to show that Galaxy also has room for collectathons à la SM64/Sunshine, but I think that about 3 of them were kinda, sorta, fun. Maybe. The rest was just padding, and at least a couple were simply abysmal. Galaxy works best as a ”course clear” 3D Mario.
I also hated that the extra levels weren’t all available at once, but keep switching around when you beat one. At that point in the game that’s just cruel. That’s one bad stain on a game that’s otherwise almost perfect. It did win GOTY, did it?

Yeah, I know that there’s more to Galaxy, but I think I’ve had more than enough of this collection. It’s great to have these 3 games on a single console, and I don’t give a damn if you can make them run even better on PC. Fuck resolution, these look great. And if you have a OLED TV, those starry skies in Galaxy are the best showcase you could find for it.

Happening to me too, although I haven’t beat the world. I think it was always like that? #JustSunshineThings

Hmm I don't really remember but I feel like it stayed focused on Noki Bay a long time until I unlocked other stuff like Yoshi and the turbo nozzle

the levels in 64 are just the best. just so much fun to jump into one and explore, try to get 100 coins, etc. i like being able to just drop in for a star or two, it's very much like an open world game.

it's quite an amazing change from the previous game. Mario World still had linear levels you could beat in a minute or so. 64's style is all about immersion and exploration. for some of the harder stars, i might end up playing the level over and over for half an hour or so. yet it never gets old, due to the controls. yeah all this has been said a million times already but it's true!

also the bits where you cling onto a cage.... AMAZING! this was a cool little thing in Mario World but here in 3D it looks really cool and is just on a whole nother level. the Hazy Maze Cave star where you are climbing across the ceiling was so fun. felt like Mission Impossible.

Mario Galaxy is a wonder. An all time great videogame.
Since the Switch came out I was really questioning if BotW was better or if Mario Odyssey was even better.
Nah. Galaxy is just sitting out there in a class of it's own.

I am glad they didn't remake these.
Glad that there was some effort to preserve them in their original forms.

The whole thing with Demon's Souls on PS5 really has convinced me that classic games should be left alone.
Spruce them up a bit to look OK on modern screens or to work better with modern controllers. Fine.
There is NO need to rework an entire game. Why not just make a completely new game?

Glad to see people just enjoying 64 and Sunshine for what they were.
64 re-made in Odyssey's engine sure would have looked nice but the original has a real pioneering charm that would have been completely lost.

So I never got to play Mario Galaxy 1 or 2 till now. Holy shit, yes the areas seem smaller than other Mario games but all props to level designers. Its bonkers, I cant even comprehend how they made decisions on levels in this game considering you are up,down, upside down etc all the time. But in the end it feels like a Mario game should, addicting. Can I just use this opportunity and say how AWFUL Sunshine is. The most fucked up everything in one game.

so is there a secret to taking out the eyes in Hazy Maze Cave? trying to get 100 coins and i can't defeat these for the life of me. the platforms are so damn small.

can i get 100 coins skipping them? or is there a trick or something?

I didn't kill the eyes, but if you don't you definitely have to get all blue coins in the poison maze part, and kill most/every enemy.
Also, you must NOT reach 100 coins by picking up the ones on the grated ceiling leading to the star above the pit where the rocks fall to; if the star pops on *top* of that ceiling, you won't be able to pick it up. Try to get those 5 coins early.
