Super Mario Run announced for iOS (Android later), Dec 2016, Screens/Info in OP

No one expected or wanted that, but no one (or at least next to no one) wanted this either. There's plenty of other things they could've done with Mario that would translate well to phones with minimal retooling. Dr. Mario for one.
No (Nintendo and Mario fans) wanted this. Many hundreds of thousands will be happy to see Mario on a platform they enjoy. Many will be excited to play Mario for the first time

Rematching the presentation, Miyamoto clearly specifies that the "hurdling" over enemies is only for specific enemies. So, goombas and such. I imagine later ones like Bullet Bills and Piranha Plants have to be avoided. Low-level enemies are more for building up combos, as seen when he bounces on multiple goombas and gets a coin multiplier.

Considering I don't want to be banned again, I will refrain from making explicit what I think of this and how much luck I wish Nintendo in that endeavour, but I hope it is fine to say that I wouold appreciate if Nintendo offered the option to play this game on their own upcoming system, code named NX, as well.

They really aren't though. In subsequent Super Mario games, sure.

I guess we simply define runner differently. For me, the primary mechanic is non-controlled forward momentum. Dodging, collecting, whatever the remaining mechanics are I consider secondary. While you can run through a Mario level without stopping, you still have the option to. Doing it in a straight shot is user choice.

This look bloody terrible.
"Y'know how we refined Mario's controls to make them as best as we can. One of the defining elements of the series? Yeah, we'll take them away"

Oh man am I bored of the NSMBWii Castle theme. I like the new cave remix though

What do you expect from an iOS game? It's finicky as fuck to play a platformer like Mario on these systems.

Actually Donkey Kong Crash Course might work decently on a phone.

You won't be able to see the entire course though on a phone. That games works by allowing you to see what is right around you on the gamepad and what is coming up on the TV so you can act correctly. Or the other way around not sure if you could switch them. Been a while. You could do it without the bigger screen and view but then the frustration level would go through the roof I think. Not to mention a higher chance of broken phones.

The og NES controller is about the entry level of player control for fast reaction games that I could give two shits about.

The only thing to be excited for here is the possibility of the Nintendo level designers eking out some compelling gameplay from the often mundane experience that is a single-tap game.

I think Rhythm Heaven is the only thing I can think of that made such a setup engaging. With Mario we're just actively watching regression of game design.

After playing those New Super Mario Bros 2 warp stages, Ive been wanting a Mario runner for a while, so I'm getting this for sure.

The best news for me though, is NO FUCKING MICROTRANSACTIONS!

Man this reminds me, maybe I should finally get that Rayman runner...

I think some people need some serious reminders that the auto runner thing is already a thing they did in NSMB2.

Another segment of this demographic are people who haven't played Mario since the original NES or arcade.

Exactly. Like with the success of Pokemon GO, it's not about faithfully recreating Mario's gameplay, it's about the IP and having a close enough approximation of what people think Mario is available on their phone in two minute bursts.

Left to right with some jumps? That's Mario alright. Print money.

People arguing about gameplay needs to be reminded that this game is not made specifically for platformer experts like you. This is for the general mobile gaming public that plays games to simply burn time at any place at any time. The success stories of mobile games never depended on complex controls or deep gameplay. Actually, the simpler, the better.

Still being developed by Nintendo and Miyamoto has a hand in it. They are literally the best at making deep but accessible games. There's hope that there'll be nuances to it for the platforming enthusiasts. Double, Triple Jumping, Block Vaulting, Twirling, and Battling all seem to be signs that point to there being optimized more nuanced routes to discover and perfect.

Boiling it down to a button press is probably doing it a disservice.

I don't really want Ninty to go third party... but I kinda want Ninty to go 3rd party.

Cool to see them doing something new. Wish we got this after learning about the NX though!

It seems like the level layouts have a bit more to them then your typical runner.

It should do really well. I think this is the perfect way to put Mario on mobile.

A simplistic traditional 2D Mario with courses that have enough leeway to account for the inaccuracy of touch screen buttons.

Touch controls emulating actual buttons are indeed inaccurate. The only way I could see Nintendo going that route, would be when Apple introduces a successful controller attachment for their devices. I know they exist already, but in order to capture such a small market they'd be sacrificing a large audience for really no good reason. Miamoto himself always believed you should design your experiences to your platform's strengths. So, for me, this is actually what I expected from Nintendo as its actually the smartest move they could have made; design wise.

I think that is your area of concern. All the other elements are in this title. Doing it in a straight shot only enhances the chance you will get a high score on your next run.

Have you played the Hitman/Lara Croft GO games? Or the Rayman games?

Have you tried playing the Deus Ex: The Fall game?

One works, one doesn't.

Because just like adapting stories from one medium to another, altering and modifying things to better suit that medium is smart. Distilling the core aspects of a franchise to a format that works well on mobile is smart

It's not as deep as your typical Mario games, but we've seen Mario do wall jumps, flips and wall crawling in the previews so it's more than just your typical run and jump.

The profit margins on this game are going to be insane, it's 90% old art assets. It's probably going to make more money than the last 5 Mario games put together.

Today is already one of those days. I can feel it in the air.

This is, indeed, a megaton. Interested to see the stats upon release, and also whatever else they are working on.

When everyone debated back and forth about Nintendo putting its franchises on mobile I always imagined games like this as apposed to the full on games we're used to getting on the dedicated Nintendo hardware.

This is the way to do things and if Pokemon Go is any indication it will actually help the sales of Mario games.

All I need now is Yoshi's Touch and Go on my phone so I have a jillion people to play against with online leader boards.

The original SMB was the very first auto run game, come on you know that's exactly how you played the entire first world.

Man, this looks perfect. Glad it's one of the 'level-based' runners along the line of the Rayman games. And a one-time purchase to unlock everything? Yesss.

The entire point of their mobile presence is to get people to buy their main games. They won't put full games on mobile.

The mobile market has a different expectation for a game. Fast, fun, and accessible. Nintendo's goal is to make money and promote their dedicated gaming platform in the process.
