So what's about an "announcement" after Smash at EVO? It's shown up on their schedule:
evo2014_stream_schedule.png

It's not tied to Nintendo specifically, and there's another generic "announcement" event immediately after Marvel, so I highly doubt it's anything important, but...

From what it looks like, I'm assuming it's just an award ceremony, but after the backlash regarding Melee being pulled last year, even if it ended up being a terrible mistake on one lower-level employee's part that was cleared up in a few
frenzy-filled
hours, maybe Nintendo really does want to use EVO to announce something this year, even if it'll likely be something small, like Captain Falcon, a new demo build they'll have running nearby, or Battlefield/Not Banned-style stages in For Glory instead of Little Mac & Fox Destination.

And, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't they announce Heihachi Mishima & Toro Inoue (His/Her fighting style borrowed from Tekken, SF, KoF, and more, plus (s)he was in SFxT) for PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale at EVO a few years back, too?

If Ridley is indeed a no-go, I think that a simple Space Pirate would be a nice addition for a Metroid rep. Zebesian or the ones from Prime Trilogy, I don't know, or maybe a composite character. They could be pretty cool.

I would much rather Ridley just be a yes-go, but I can easily see a generic composite Space Pirate playable, too. We seriously need more than just Samus, and although I could legitimately see Anthony Higgs being playable if he was in more Metroids than the worst one, that just isn't the case. Ridley's the best bet, but behind him, a Space Pirate will suffice. Them or SSE's Primids are the the only generic mooks I'd want as playable, and believe me, I want them.
The R.O.B. variants from SSE don't count for me

A random Space Pirate would be such a cop-out. Ridley or nothing, I say. Anthony is in a total of one game, and it's not even a good one. Hell, a frickin' Chozo would be better than those two. Come to think of it, that might be cool.

Anthony is the worst suggestion ever. He's a minor character from one horrible game and his design is just a boring space marine with a gun.
Look again, there's Samus and Zero Suit Samus now. Both are from Metroid, and share the same symbol.
It was a joke.

Eh... not really. Metroid isn't a very character-focuses series (like Mario, Pokemon, Star Fox, Kid Icarus, etc), it's mainly just about Samus and how she interacts with her environment (avoiding Other M). It's like Pikmin and Animal Crossing in that the protagonist of the series is pretty much all you'd ever need. Of course, apparently Sakurai thought that Metroid was an important enough series to get two characters even though it doesn't really need one, so he added Zero Suit Samus.

Unless the next Metroid has Adam/Anthony again or Dark Samus shows up in a different game, I think we're pretty much set for Metroid reps. The creatures and bosses (which are iconic in their own right) still need representation, but that's why we have Ridley, Mother Brain, and Metroids.

I guess the generic Space Pirates could be an AT too, but I think Ridley/Mother Brain fills that role, since Space Pirates can't function without Mother Brain to tell them what to do, and Ridley himself if a Space Pirate.

Even Japan did it better, and they clearly didn't care about Prime.

...but not that much better.
LOL, that cover art is even worse. It looks like an intern got happy with the copy+paste tool; they even used the stock art the Prime 3 Space Pirate.

The Metroid Prime 2 Japanese cover is pretty stellar though.

Dark Samus was in three games as the main villain and is the main villain overall of the Prime trilogy. She's up there with Mother Brain and Ridley.

She's probably not going to show up again unless we get a Metroid Prime 4, since she's directly tied to Phazon.

Also, the Other M Space Pirate shit directly contradicts Zero Mission and the Prime trilogy (actual good games), so fuck that.

Oh definitely, and she's an AT too! She's not going to be playable though because Prime doesn't seem to be a focus in Smash. And I agree, but it happened.

Sure, but it's better than Samus standing pose, dark tinted Samus standing pose, and random stock Dark Samus artwork at 20% opacity.

Moral of the story, Corruption's got shitty boxart.

You know, I never thought about it, but I would easily buy into that pretty quickly. A Playable Chozo would be pretty cool.

Too bad there isn't a specific Chozo character, though.

No it's still worse lol

There's Samus's dad, but I think he was basically erased, like most of the manga (outside of Samus's parents getting killed by Ridley).

I can understand where he's coming from even though I like ZSS.
"hmm metroid has a hardcore fanbase, how should we expand that games roster in smash?"
"More samus"
"ok"

"Oh so you mean Dark Samus right? That bad-ass villain? We don't have too many villains, and Metroid's kind of all about that."

"No I mean the Samus that is the same character but exists only as artwork to reward hard working players with a bit of sexy closure."

"Ok"

And I was just using the Space Pirate as an example. Dammit now you're all talking about it and making me want it even more and making me even more confused why it hasn't happened yet.

Anyone else notice the potrait backgrounds start white and then radiate out and turn orange in a circular pattern?

I just noticed it now with all this Samus talk. Kind of a neat little effect. Please tell me someone has used this already to predict the roster size? I would be ashamed of the smash community if it hasn't lol!

All of the backgrounds are actually animated. They have flames that appear and reappeare, but they're box-specific as far as I'm aware.

Man, Japan's Super Metroid box art is so much better.

And I have no clue what Nintendo was thinking with Other M. Japan gets this neat one...

And everywhere else gets this shit.

Wow non-JPN Other M looks absolutely awful! What's with the bottom there? Why does her chest just cut off and turn into space?

Nope you can still use the no-homebrew options. Not sure why it froze though... Also it might be a good idea to ask smash questions here. We talk about everything smash related (or not related during the weekends...). That thread is dead anyways

Cool, didn't want to derail the thread with my STUPID questions.
