Does anyone else love the fact that each guest character seems to represent a specific part of gaming history?

Pac-Man - early ‘80s “golden age of arcade” era (most of Pac-Man’s attacks are from games released between 1980 and 1984)

Mega Man - late ‘80s NES era (most of Mega Man’s attacks are from the first three games)

Sonic - ‘90s Nintendo vs. Sega era (most of Sonic’s attacks are from the first three games and Sonic the Fighters)

All three happen to be the mascots of different companies, too. I’m not just saying this because we’re stuck with them: if I had to pick three guest characters, I’d have definitely gone with Pac-Man, Mega Man, and Sonic.

Yeah, I really like how they've made Pac-Man basically a rep for arcades. Outside of the hammer item and the 75 m / Mario Bros. stage (there are probably others I'm forgetting), we haven't had a lot of arcade love in Smash and definitely none this significant. They've really knocked it out of the park with Pac-Man.

I don't like that Pac-Man summons those sprites, doesn't feel like it meshes with anything. Same reason why I never played as Game and Watch, lol.

Still having reservations about this game but I'm starting to let go of them the more footage I watch.

So Snake to finish it with late 90s early 00s Sony dominance?

If this game is great I don't need anything else on the wii u. I will be satisfied. I am not good enough to care about proper balance so I have a feeling I'm going to love this one.

As someone that never was into competitive, I think the hype for the game is just unmeasurable. POTD helped a lot on that.

Little Mac's alt and poster came from Punch-Out arcade

Kirby mac!

Gorilla Kirby is best Kirby.

At this point the series at least deserves a stage that's got stronger ties to a specific DK game instead of coming across like a vague hodgepodge of generic jungle tropes and a few series elements loosely related to some kind of DK game (exception of 75M of course).
I mean Melee has two DK stages both set upon a Jungle river with water prowling klaptraps in a series where I can't even recall any instances of jungle rivers nor klaptraps that swam anywhere funnily enough. Basically it's the complete opposite of say Zelda stages which are more closely entwined with the source material.

Fortunately Return's jungle has a rather distinct visual style to it with defined stage elements that other games like Mario Golf have already made use of so hey maybe this time it'll be different, actually I'd also like to not have a jungle for a change but small steps first.
So basically, Donkey Kong has the same situation as Metroid, just with less lava caves and more rivers.

Idk, I feel some people are getting a little to hung up on some characters not having fast canceling air-to ground moves. Yes it's an important tool in the Melee meta game, but not every character needs to have all/most/some of their be less laggy to be viable. The dreaded Brawl "stall" is predicated on many things working together. But to fix it, you don't need to do a 180, you just need to get things past a tipping point. As long as there are a sizable portion (the right portiion) of the cast that CAN do it. that pull from the more offensive players will make the game more offensive. And as long as it isn't some lock down type of aggression, then other characters will find their strengths countering that style.

Pellet and classic characters are the same move, outside of Galaxian which is a fruit. I don't think if the pellet is a different custom variation of the move with Mappy, but they're the same move. Check out where Pacman holds his hands for fruit vs pellet/retro

I could see that.

Slightly different poses, but the beam/pellets come from the same place and the effects don't have the border like the rest of his sprites do.

Truthfully I agree that those three would be my choices, but I think Snake fits in from that perspective too. In a way he represents the Nintendo vs. Sony battle that started in the mid 90's and is still going on today.

I crave new info. Badly. But then again I always do.

Pac-Man hype is reaching max levels. I've always enjoyed and have been interested by Pac-Man, but I also always felt like I sucked at them and didn't know enough about them. So I downloaded this Pac-Man Museum and am getting a serious fix.

Man, Pac-Man is still just like one of the most intense games ever. I dunno at least for me. It's always given this weird I'm completely in control but I'm completely not intensity that's kind of one of a kind. Also why I probably still suck at it.

He's been made into a fucking awesome fighter. I seriously can't wait to play him.

Also yeah, Snake for late 90's all day.

I can see each guest character representing a specific era. Pac-Man has always been really popular though.

People want lower aerial-to-ground lag because it makes aerials better for approaching. More approach options=More offense. Same reason they want crouch out of run.

I'm wondering if Little Mac is based around the current aerial landing lag; if landing lag is reduced, he might need to be buffed accordingly because his aerials suck so much.

But he kinda represents the Sony side of that battle. There's not really a good third-party character to represent Nintendo at that time, though. If only we could get Banjo to rep the N64...

I could see that.

Yeah, especially when you compare it to this one, look at the foot placement.

I'm still not completely sure if those tractor beams are the result of one of the moves, it could also be a grab, with the Galaga ship doing something completely different.

Either way, all of these are pretty different from the fruit/Galaxian move.

I have to wonder at what point in development did they have to start developing the demo, and what build they base it off of? Since it doesn't have all of the characters playable in it, One can only assume that it's a much earlier build and that they've had multiple different builds since beginning work on QAing the demo. Some of the stuff people are worried about might have been completely changed at this point.

Could be wrong though, I only have a basic idea of how demo development works.

Donkey Kong is probably going to have a new stage. It's even hinted at in the Smash Direct with the items montage using the Rocket Barrel music.

For those of you that are in a Pacman hype rush like me, the Championship Edition DX+ All You Can Eat Edition (yes, that's its name; it's a special edition of a special edition of a special edition) is on sale on Steam at 75% off:
http://store.steampowered.com/sub/31161/
For those of you that have played the game on other platforms (note, the DX edition is very NOT the same as the 2007 Championship Edition; the gameplay is very different, based on training tons of ghosts for ridiculous combos) you'll probably know this as the best Pacman game and unadulterated cocaine. This edition includes several new skins including a Dig Dug and Rally X one.

Oh yeah I can rock that shit. DX is so fun. But the original Pac.....Men? They kill me.

What all does the extra stuff include? Because I already have DX on my 360, but I barley play that thing anymore. So I'm thinking about re-buying it on steam to go with this Museum.

NVM, looking at it right now. DAMN tree-fitty? For all the DLC too? Fuck yeah I'm buyin that.

I like how general opinion on Pac-Man has almost completely changed after he was revealed.

I thought everyone was mostly positive about Pac-Man since he was revealed?

Did they buff Kirby? They nerfed him a shiet lot in melee.

Also when is the release date?

Kirby actually got buffed a bit in Brawl, but not enough to be top-tier.

3DS version is out October 3rd in North America and Europe, September 19th in Japan. Wii U version is out "Holiday 2014."

I think he meant before his reveal.

I really dig how they seem to be making Up B specials actually useful as attacks, Has anyone else noticed this?

In other Smash games, usually Up B is just the recovery move. Sure it's an attack most of the time, but usually not a very useful one. And on top of that, the fact that it leaves you defenseless afterwards lead a lot of people to rarely use them in battle. Something I've noticed throughout the videos I've been watching for SSB4 is that it seems like that might not be the case anymore. Many character's Up B moves now seem to be very risk/reward based. Plenty of them seem to have potential as great K.O. moves now.

Specifically, some of the ones I've noticed are...

Samus's added knockback at the end of her Screw Attack

ZZS's up kicks seem to be good and far vertically reaching KO move.

DK's spin on the ground now seems to hit multiple times, and the last hit looks like it will be great for K.O.s.

Little Mac's final hit of his up B easily killed a character that was a bit off of the top of the screen. It also has great vertical reach, so I think it will be his go-to option when people are above him in the air considering his other air moves seem to suck. (This is actually really cool, because it furthers his strange aerial game. He pretty much seems to have 1 air K.O. move, and it's a risk/reward because it's an up B.)

I really like this. I hope that other character's up B's that are mainly focused on recovery but are attacks, (Fox, Mario, Marth, ect), follow this same trend. The only way the defenseless after up B option has ever really been explored is through recovery, so it's about time that it starts to be used for strong risk/reward battle strategies. And just generally working these attacks into character strategies. I think it'll add a nice few extra layers to the gameplay that extend further than this. For instance, thinking about it, it could also make recoveries even more exciting.

I'm just happy the Screw Attack can actually kill things, considering it turns Samus into a whirling blade of death in the Metroid games.

Buy this game people, even if just for the music.

I admit I went from mildly interested to hyped as all hell after its reveal. What Sakurai has done is beyond my very best expectations, so much so that's become my most hyped newcomer (after Megaman).
