Yes, I've noticed that watching the videos of the game, but it's more likely that the game is simply not finished yet and knockback is still being refined. There are also more sensible alternative theories presented in that first post, such as knockback thresholds (which is a really interesting concept, honestly) or bad DI.

So does F.L.U.D.D. cause damage with scalding customisation and have higher knockback with high-pressure customisation? That's pretty nifty.

We don't know yet. But if that's true with the high-pressure one, why would you ever bother using regular F.L.U.D.D.? lol

Could also be that Bowser's bodyslam does more damage/knockback the higher it's executed/further it travels before hitting the ground.

Smaller range, requires more precision, whereas the regular F.L.U.D.D. would have a wider range and require less skill/accuracy to use.

You could say that about a lot of the customisable moves, I reckon, but the fact they're not allowed when playing with strangers/tournaments means you can't get too comfortable with using your own customisations.

How much survival DI is there? I was under the impression it was nearing Smash 64 levels. There's definitely almost no smash DI.

Pic of the day. Here's Donkey Kong's third standard special attack, Storm Punch!! Thanks to the customization options, each fighter is stocked with 12 different special moves. The number of attacks is pretty appalling.

Appalling? Are you sure you used the correct word here, nintendo?

ap·pall·ing adjective -informal
awful; terrible.

You think the number of attacks is terrible? What?

That said - Custom moves/fighters are going to be FANTASTIC for single player. Anything to make unlocking all the trophies more fun/easier.

We've made it so that customization options, including special attacks, will be disabled when you're playing online in With Anyone mode. After all, we have to think about game balance, and it's crucial for anonymous players to be able to use reliable tactics against one another. When you're playing in single player, battling with friends online, or playing locally, you're free to play however you want--with or without customization.

I don't see them getting much use outside of single player except for when we're bored and start playing all random stuff.

Wait, so all characters have 12 special attacks now, not just the Mii Fighters? That's awesome. Sounds like a nightmare for tourny people though.

Palutena and Mii have all different moves, everyone else (so far) has variations on existing moves.

<--------------------- Can not WAIT to see what the new falcon punches are. Will he still say falcon punch for all of them? Will one be electrical? Will one have a tornado coming off of it, like DK? I can't wait!

That looks strong.

Why can't sakurai put if different speed modes like Mario kart.. No I don't mean the two modes from barwl or the many speed options from melee.. Like two official speed mode melee fast or the new fast

Speed wouldn't change as much as you think. There are literally dozens of global variable differences and hundreds, if not thousands of different character-specific variables with regards to gameplay physics/attributes. To make the game play like melee would require almost all of those variables to be changed. It's not a simple change.

I think he's being playful here; like when you're watching someone play, they do a great job, and you call it disgusting.

It also makes sense as a light-hearted jab at how much work it must be to develop and debug so many attacks.

pretty much this, if it was really that simple he would have probably added it in

needless to say a smaller audience isn't worth appealing to if you have to do that much work

Really? One essentially doesn't matter, and the other is only in one version of the game.

It may be blocked off for online play, but the thought of customizing characters I've played for years like Falco and Luigi sounds really awesome. I plan to use customized characters locally as much as I can. Personalize the veterans I've used for years along side the newcomers.

As for Smash Run, I'm a huge fan of City Trial from Air Ride. To this day, I still frequently play it with my brother and friends. Personally, bringing it back for Smash Bros is literally the best news I've heard for this game.

I think that until we have our hands on the game, we won't really know how prevalent the custom moves are. We assume that since you can't use them online and they're likely be unusable in tournaments that they'll go unused. That may not be the case. It may turn a bad character into a good one with one simple change. It could totally change the popularity of some characters when playing online or locally w/ friends.

I DEFINITELY see it being used to exploit the single player content, but it could still be very fun multiplayer.

Customized characters seems like a fun way to have "surprise" matches against friends.

Customize characters without informing eachother on the changes, then duking it out with these surprise adjustments to see who has the best customized character.

I'd play it more than coin matches, that's for sure.

So

how many games have you guys become aware of first through smash?

my answer is: pretty much all of them aside from pokemon and mario, I think. I was a youngin' when I played smash64

Smash 64: F-Zero, Earthbound.

Smash melee Fire Emblem, Ice climbers, Game & Watch

I knew every new franchise added in brawl & in ssb4 so far, character-wise.

Pretty cool move.

I think he's said that second part before in the Digital Event but good that he emphasizes it again.

Smash 64 introduced me to Earthbound, in a round-about way it also taught me about F-Zero too because I didn't know there were actual characters involved in that game.

And Melee introduced us all to Fire Emblem, huh?

Fire Emblem is the big one and I owe it for introducing the series to me. Metroid in 64 was also a big deal; I thought Samus was pretty much the coolest thing ever as a kid. I actually first learned that Samus was a girl from her 64 ending!

F-Zero and Earthbound stand out for me as well, but I regret to say that I didn't really understand the appeal until the internet.

Melee introduced the west to fire emblem more or less

Yep. I remember playing with a friend, and we saw on a magazine the ways to unlock different characters (it only stated the name of the character, and how to unlock, no images or anything)
Well, once we saw Mr Game and Watch, we thought the name in the list Roy, was some kind of giant GameBoy or something, only becuase it rhymes, so we started calling that character Roy Gameboy. Until we unlocked him of course.
Mmmm, another cool looking character, and the trophy says Fire Emblem. I wonder what game is that.
So we went to the internet to look for info about that game. Good times.

hmmm... in SSB I wasn't familiar with Samus, Capt Falcon, and Ness

in Melee, add Marth and Roy (obviously) and Ice Climbers

in Brawl, just Pit! (although I didn't know who Lucas was either)

Fire Emblem, Ice Climbers and Earthbound. The rest I always knew about or heard of even though I may not have played the games.

The game doesn't have to play like Melee. Simply allowing dashes to be cancelled is a start towards more offensive options, and that's a simple thing because Bowser can already do it (for whatever reason).

And you speak as if Sakurai isn't tweaking thousands of variables every day already. That's what testing and polishing a game entails.

Earthbound, Metroid, F-Zero, Ice Climbers, Fire Emblem, and Game & Watch.

I remember thinking Samus was a robot at first.

Let's see...

Mother
Metroid
Ice climber
Fire emblem(duh)
Kid icarus

I think that's it.

Smash 64: The Legend of Zelda, F-Zero, Earthbound

Melee: Nintendo Puzzle League (Dr. Mario), Fire Emblem, Kid Icarus, Mach Rider, Shin Onigashima, Balloon Fighter, Panel De Pon

Brawl (Including pre-hype): Mother 3 and the distinction between Mother & Earthbound, Elite Beat Agents, Jam With The Band, Ouendan, The Mysterious Murasame Castle, Sin & Punishment, Starfy

Same here, more or less.

When I heard about Smash for the first time in Nintendo Power, I thought it was pretty much my dream game. Actually getting it though, I didn't know who half the people were. I knew Mario, Luigi, DK, Link, the Pokemon, and Yoshi. Of them I loved Pokemon and Zelda, but was kind of indifferent to the others until years later.

I always remember my brother going through classic mode when I brought the game home, getting to Samus, and saying "She scares me". Partially memorable because I was so surprised she was a girl. But her being scary definitely shaped my impression of her, and made me that much more excited to eventually play the Metroid games.

I had seen Earthbound before, but had no idea until I read Ness's description in game. Definitely a nostalgia blast when I realized he was from that one game that I just barely did remember.

Captain Falcon seemed really mysterious, and I never did figure out what F-Zero was until the Gamecube days. Star Fox seemed like just another character I never gave much thought to... but Falco in Melee really made me want to try Star Fox games.

Melee also made me want to play Ice Climber (which was a huge disappointment) and Game and Watch stuff (which was pretty fun). Even the trophies made me seek out Kid Icarus, Animal Crossing, Custom Robo, and wish Donshin had been localized here. Not to mention Fire Emblem, which is probably now among my favorite Nintendo series.

When Brawl came out, I was already pretty savvy to most Nintendo games and characters that could possibly be in. But yeah, I don't think I'd be as big of a fan of games or Nintendo without Smash. I guess from Brawl hype I ended up wishing I could play Takamaru and Sukapon's games, so there's something. Oh yeah, Starfy too, as mentioned below.

I'm unsure about what I picked up from 64 and what came from other sources due to how young I was when I played it; but I can say with certainty that Smash later introduced me to Fire Emblem, Starfy, Rhythm Heaven, Earthbound, Electroplankton, Sin & Punishment, Panel de Pon and Golden Sun.

64: F-Zero, Kirby, Earthbound, Metroid. (I had an SNES growing up, but I wasn't really the person making the buying decisions and we only had Mario, Zelda, and StarFox.)

Melee: Fire Emblem, Game and Watch, Ice Climbers.

Brawl: I knew everyone.

Marvel 3 does it is with X-Factor just fine. Totally doable.

For me that'd be...
Kirby, Fire Emblem, Earthbound, Animal Crossing (stage/trophy), Kid Icarus, Metal Gear Solid, Ice Climbers, Game and Watch, F-Zero, Starfox,... and I'm probably forgetting a few.
So yes, it's quite good promotion for a lot of series.
