I'd probably go heavier on Saturn characters, myself, since that would've been more recent and did really well in Japan (which is, presumably, where this game would be developed circa 1999). Probably a Sakurai Tensen character, Dragon Force or Shining character, Fighting Vipers, Virtual-ON, presumably the Hornet would be a fighter character again...

Yeah, I was going with characters in my mind would be the most memorable around that time period, but I guess you have a point...I wonder if Bug or Clockwork Knight would get in, because I remember them the most from the Saturn era.

Sort of sad looking through Sega Franchises and realizing all of them are pretty much dead, and have been for years.

Why do so many people want to get rid of Jigglypuff? For shame.

I'm no hardkore smasher and I'm not a Pokemon fan, so to me, Jigglypuff seems like some completely random character. I know who Pikachu and Mewtwo are, and I understand that Lucario and Geninja are there to promote new(er) games, but Jigglypuff seems like it fits the same category as Pichu. Extraneous Pokemon filler that could just as easily be a pokeball summon.

Those models make me wish Capcom didn't stylise so heavily in their modern Vs. games. Some clean-ass, detailed HD models like these would be lovely. Especially on Marvel characters.

This man knows what's up.

People wanting Jigglypuff cut?

I don't want her cut, but if it comes down between Jiggs and Mewtwo being in the vanilla roster and the other winding up as DLC; I'd prefer Jiggs to come later. I need my Melee main back.

Back in the day, Jiggly was the second top character in popularity. She was also fairly common in the early anime. Also, #TeamNoCuts. Also, leave my main alone.

Jigglypuff's anime appearances are unforgettable.

Not to mention, her Rest is so satisfying. Give Kirby the Rest's properties on his Rock at the very least.

Is there any chance Megaman could be cut from the game at this point? Could Capcom request that?
They could, but why would they pass up on what's basically free money? Presumably they get a cut of the sales income for Mega Man's inclusion, or at the very least a one-time royalty check.

Because Capcom just can't be happy without cancelling something Megaman related per year.

Jigglypuff was never more popular than Mewtwo, Meowth, or the starters. She was included in the first Smash Bros. because Sakurai wanted an intentionally weak "joke" character. With that said, I definitely don't want her gone -- she's appeared in all three installments and has earned her keep as a Smash Bros. mascot. It wouldn't be the same without her.

She's not weak in any of the games, though... Well, maybe in Brawl, comparitively. Still, at least you're talking sense unlike some other people.

People have found ways to use Jigglypuff advantageously (balance isn’t Smash Bros.’ strong suit), but Sakurai wrote on the SSB64 site that he intentionally designed her to be weaker than the other characters. She was meant to be the Dan Hibiki of that game.

Daily reminder that Hawlucha won't be in Smash ;_;

click for webm version!

Is it sad that my first thought on the Greninja reveal was "Damn. There goes Hawlucha's chances?" Because Greninja's cool and all, but I thought Hawlucha was friggin' awesome before seeing this. And now I've seen this.

If Pokken's a thing, I don't care if it's Garbage-Tier, I am maining Hawlucha, even if it DOESN'T have moves like that.

I have hope, but why would they reveal Ness on July 4th?

I'm assuming it's because it's Independence Day in America (Basically America Day). Ness lives in Eagleland, which is a parody of America, people are expecting a Veteran reveal tonight, and the 4th was semi-acknowledged on the Brawl Dojo (Cracker Launcher was revealed that day, and it even had a reminder to be safe and sane when playing with fireworks). Granted, seeing how Mute City is basically future New York City, Captain Falcon works just as well, but honestly, it could be anyone.

Seems pretty tenuous for either of them... why are we expecting a veteran reveal tonight?...

I'm calling it now: there will definitely be some kind of singing-related event match with Jigglypuff and the Chorus Kids.

Quick reminder: Smash E3 t-shirt giveaway is happening in 10 minutes on my Twitter (@ashpaulsen)!

That's actually really fantastic fan art, damn. Not that Inafune has ever outlined his idea of what happens between the Classic and X series, but I could imagine something like that being close to it (sadly).

Im just poking fun lol

Okay, sorry if I made it too real there. You can never tell on GAF. :P

No joke, last week I was listening to a lot of Battle Network/EXE music and I was just thinking about how that series was two generations too early. Could you imagine the idea of the franchise (the world wide interconnectivity with PET characters) in this day and age?

THIS. Battle Network and Star Force with the 3DS's online and StreetPass would be amazing.

Seems pretty tenuous for either of them... why are we expecting a veteran reveal tonight?...

There are (probably) at least a few starters left (in particular, Wario, Ice Climbers, and Meta Knight being past starters that haven't been revealed). Usually, characters are revealed at the end of the week, and there's not really any new games coming out that could warrant a reveal this Summer.

In total there are only 11 weeks left until release. So, assuming that at LEAST those three are going to be revealed before release, that's a 27% chance that one will be revealed this "end of week." Not bad odds! If we expect another newcomer sometime during the August direct, that brings us up to a 37% chance of a reveal this week... and if they have any other characters to reveal (Lucas isn't cut, Ganondorf for Hyrule Warriors, Ness/another character upgraded to starter), that brings us close to 50%.

Numbers don't lie!

Seems pretty tenuous for either of them... why are we expecting a veteran reveal tonight?...

From last August until the Smash Direct, we basically got characters on a biweekly basis, barring a break in March, and we still got Ike in May, sandwiched between the 5 in April and the 3 in June.

It's been over 2 weeks between E3 and now, and usually sub-par weeks like last week end in a character reveal, so people were thinking we'd've got one then. A lot of it's just stir-craziness, but we still don't know about 14-15 veterans (Depends on if you took Mr. G&W's cameo in Pac-Man's trailer as a soft-confirm), and only 5-6 are likely to be gone. Seeing how the game's coming out in Japan in 2 months, people are thinking we'll see 4 more characters or so pre-release.

Plus, for some reason, people got excited over a Falco rumor that he'd be revealed last week, and people were expecting new information from an expo in Japan that happened last week beyond the Steel Diver trophy (Which is all we got).

I have this feeling we aren't getting any character this month.
Then, in August, the last month before release, we're getting a bunch of them one after the other to generate last-minute hype (people like Captain Falcon, Mewtwo, Snake).

We weren't getting excited for Falco over a rumor. It was for the fact of figuring out if it's real or not, since the 'leaker' gave themselves such a small amount of time.

Ah yes, another example in misadventures of the misuse of the word iconic.

I can't wait to see that debate play out on a less civil stage.

SmashGAF actively wanting characters to get cut?! SmashGAF, NEVER CHANGE!

Wanting characters getting cut is pretty stupid and tasteless. Just let it happens naturally.

Jigglypuff should be in before Mewtwo because of Smash Bros. precedent and otherwise the Pokemon roster hangs too much on "cool" designs and not enough on "cute." Jigglypuff better balances that out.

I'd like Mewtwo back but Jigglypuff has to come first.
