Man, I felt like I played Ganondorf pretty alright in Melee, but I do not feel like I'm good with him in Project M at all. He's only got one huge, huge difference (Ganonciding!), but it just changes him so much. Then again, maybe it's just been a while since I played Ganondorf in Melee.

And with that pic, I once again recall there being a similar situation in which a Nintendo employee had to come respond to these kinds of pics being posted for Brawl I think.

Let's not have that happen again guys. Junior, remove that pic if you haven't already done so.

This is the part where I wish everyone would pretend it's not even there and discuss something totally different instead of crowding around it like that's not the most suspicious thing in the world.

So show of hands, how many people here are going to be watching Melee @ EVO this weekend?

I don't usually watch tournaments due to being a filthy casual, but I'll probably take a look at the finals.

...As much as I hate to admit it, it's because I'm kind of expecting an announcement.

Of course. Last year's was awesome.

Do I see what I think I see? ;)

Depends on my work schedule, will watch as much of it as I can, and by it I mean Evo. Smash is usually the 2'd worst game during the main finals day (worst is injustice). Love smash don't enjoy watching it competitively, especially when its next to things like KoF, SF, and MvC

Very excited for Melee at EVO. I want to see Armada take the crown on the greatest stage there is.

Would also love to see some new foreign talent come out of nowhere and surprise everyone. Really enjoyed what Amsa did with such a low tier character at kings of Cali.

C'mon lolpho, there's a huge discussion going on right now about how creepy GAF can be, we don't need you throwing Smash Brothers into it too.

Huh? What do you mean, like here on GAF or are you referring to that one Dojo post by Sakurai?

Absolutely.

Yup. Nate from Nintendo Treehouse. Let me find the post.

Edit: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=10491051&postcount=62356

Hey there. This is Nate from the Treehouse at NOA. You may remember me from such classics as That One Demo In San Francisco and The Screenshot That Angered Smashboards.

Anyway, it’s general policy that we don’t post on message boards, but with the end drawing near for the Dojo, I got some special dispensation. I was going to post this several places, but since all roads lead to GAF anyway—and since this thread is of such legendary size—I decided this might as well be the only spot.

Anyway, as some of you know, we’ve been working on Brawl with Sakurai-san and his team for several years now, and the Dojo itself for almost a year. Needless to say it’s been a ton of work, though nothing compared to what Sora pulled off, obviously. That said, it’s been a labor of love, and its coming end seems sort of sad. I can’t tell you how many nights I stayed up until Japan Time, knowing what morsel of delectable information was about to be served up and relishing every bit of anticipation from you guys. It really made all the work worthwhile, and I wanted to thank you die-hards that have been around for it all.

I also figured this would be a good spot to ask a favor. Now, I don’t know how many of you guys download daily stages and snapshots from the Smash Service, but for those that do… Look, sorting through 10,000 submissions every week is fun and all, but it breaks my heart to have to ditch some amazing stage because it had an extra-raunchy title. There’s some incredible creativity on display that I’d love to share with the rest of the Smash community, but a little restraint in the naming conventions will go a long way. Yes, we all know it’s hilarious when Diddy Kong goes to town on somebody’s face—I feel that the snapshot medium is also ready for some fresh ideas. Spread the word if you can.

So… Yeah. Have fun with the last seven or so updates. And when the gray day of reckoning comes and Sporsk approaches, pillow in hand, to gently smother this thread at last, do not weep! Smile, because Smash endures, and it is good.

Thanks again, guys.

Yeah, I was really surprised how many people have Mario as a main. I never hear people talk much about using him (though Project M has buffed him quite a bit).

It's amazing considering how middle of the road he is in basically every other game, I was pleasantly surprised when I tried him out

People love easy and powerful. *Looks at Melee Sheik*

Project M Mario is like the result of Melee Sheik going to sleep one night praying for a real recovery then waking up and finding out that not only did she get that but she could also be a matador with the sheet she was sleeping under.

So something I've been thinking about that I think a lot of people take for granted, sometimes even myself...

Ridley's boss fights in Brawl were really fucking cool, and very well done.

Ridley

Meta Ridley

Sakurai really did the character justice. I mean look at that shit. That ferocity. Those animations. That theme gloriously redone and just fucking booming. And not to mention, well big an intimidating as shit.

While the debate for him to be playable will probably go until the end of time as long as Smash Bros. still exists and he's not, and I'm still not sure exactly which side I'm on, Ridley has always been defined as a fucking boss, in two senses of the word. It's a big part of his character, and Sakurai really understood that in Brawl. While it does seem like Metroid fans sometimes get screwed in the Smash series, it also seems like that the Metroid love that we do get is sometimes severely overlooked. There really was a lot of care an effort put into making one of Nintendo's most intimidating bosses be just that. If this type of effort is put into his boss fight in Smash 4, I'm really looking forward to it.

Also, I'll never get tired of seeing Pikachu flexin on Ridley. What a little fuckin hard-ass.

Bravo post.

I never understand people saying Metroid is underepresented in Smash.

Wow so many Mario mains. Guess I'm gonna have to break out my Luigi and Pit too. I thought people found Mario boring?
I used to think Mario was boring, but he feels so solid in pm and his recovery is crazy. Wall jumping out of up b feels so good. That said, I still don't find him as interesting as his fellow characters from mushroom kingdom

Wait, everyone plays Mario? I thought I was the only one. Damnit.

Yeah I've used Mario since N64 as he's my favorite videogame character (Mega Man being the other one).

I love Mario, I use him in every game he's playable lol.

If I can be hipster for a moment: I totally liked Mario before he was cool. You guys are just posers!
It's nice for him to be an upper tier character for once

I do agree that Meta Ridley was very well done, but regular Ridley's boss fight was incredibly meh. Literally every move he does, sans the tail scrape perhaps, could be transposed onto any other flying, winged boss and work the exact same way. None of it feels Ridley.

Plus it's combined with the general same-ness of all of Brawl's bosses. Every one, with a few exceptions like the aforementioned Meta Ridley, follows the same pattern - go to one edge of the screen, wait, make an attack. Rinse and repeat. For a game like Smash Bros. it's so... boring. Like, it worked decently enough for Master Hand because he was a special case, but when nearly every boss character does the same thing it just drags on and is... less than exciting.

If they had wanted to make a really compelling Ridley fight, I wish they had pulled more from what makes him exciting in the Metroid games. Make him constantly in motion, make him fly in and out of your reach, make him pelt you with fireballs or grab you - though while you were grabbed you could unleash your own powerful attacks as well. Make him a fight that you can't just stand around and charge up moves, a fight where you have to use quick dodges and tactics or you'll be obliterated.

OR MAKE HIM A PLAYABLE CHARACTER COUGH COUGH

Yea definitely when I'm free from work. I'm rooting for armada to keep beasting with that legendary Peach.

I have fun with Mario every now and then. He's a solid character who is easy to get a hold of imo but that recovery tho sometimes.

Where does Luigi's "boat" pose come from? The pose he's in in the official Brawl 4 art and one of his taunts?

Or...is it just Sakurai being Sakurai.

Just an extension of the weird persona he has in Smash and the Mario & Luigi games.

That's tragic. Can't get no respect.
Yeah, even as a Mario user, I was hoping to see Luigi in the higher tiers. But, whatever, fuck the tiers, make him a badass yourself!

I've never played Project M, so I'm curious about my main: how is Luigi?
His recovery has been buffed, hitbox buffs on several moves like his forward air, his down air is really powerful now, and his side b is changed so you can have guaranteed misfires with some prior set up.

He's still low tier though

Those things you listed would be amazing, but I think that's just an inherent "problem" with Smash's bosses considering the game mechanics. It's can be adjusted here and there with variants like with the Meta-Ridley fight, but considering how Smash works in general and the insane variety of moves that can be used on bosses compared to your average video game boss, the "stand here and let you hit me for a while" part of the fights and the lacking interactivity just seem necessary.

I personally thought his first fight was very well done too. While sure, the moves could've been applied to another flying boss rather easily, the majority of them were still taken from the Metroid games. The tail scrape, jump slams, missile tackles, and screen rushes were all pretty reminiscent of his battles in the games. Definitely would've liked to see some fireballs though, and I do agree that the Meta-Ridley fight was more fun.

Cause I've seen Gulpin KO fighters at 40% health.
Ah, turns out there are a few changes, but none to Gulpin. From the ssbwiki:

Due to issues with slow motion, Timers are removed and replaced with ordinary stickers, even for Training mode. Poké Ball Pokémon are also changed slightly: Latios and Latias deal half their usual damage, and Weavile no longer stuns opponents, instead sending them on a weak upwards trajectory. Other items remain unchanged, though, aside from a few Final Smashes.

I played PM like 2 days ago, and man was I bad. I lost everything that I had lol. I fear I will no longer have much time to get really good at Smash Bros. like I have in the past.

I will participate in Smash U and 3DS tourneys because I love it, and I'm a really competitive person. But I will go in as a more practical player, I've always leaned more towards that anyway. Really good players can usually out tech me, but I rely on my gut and taking lots of risk.

My greatest weakness is probably stubbornness. It takes a lot for me to respect a player and change my game up mid-match.
