So ... known Mii fighter hats:

- mii force
- purple top hat
- orange sports helmet
- pink flower
- straw hat. (blue lined)
- classic cowboy hat
- flat cowboy hat
- black top hat

Are these all hats that appear in 3DS streetpass plaza?

Actually, that's an interesting question: Is the Mii using the officially currently-set hat, or are there just a few hats available as alt forms within the games (whether they're formally unlocked or otherwise)

I discussed this the other day and from the current batch of screenshots I recognise all hats apart from one, which is the hat worn by the female Mii in this screenshot:
screen-9.jpg

If, however, the cowboy hat is a unique hat that changes appearance based on the gender (I use a male Mii and I haven't bought the cowboy hat to test) then all hats shown are from Streetpass Plaza.

Though it is interesting to note that the tophat in this screenshot is purple when the Plaza hat is black indicating their may be an option to change hat colours or again new hat designs made just for Smash (or is Sakurai accidently revealing hats from a future Streetplaza update :3c):

To assume that hats are linked to the Plaza may be assuming too much especially since the Wii U does not have a Streetpass Plaza. Also note that all hats shown so far are "realistic" headpieces rather than the Nintendo references (i.e. Mario cap) or the odd ones (i.e. pizza) so the selection in Smash could be limited.

But cowboy hat and now the Mii Force helmet do confirm that Sakurai is referencing even the most recent hat selection (for those who haven't played the games, new hats have been added with updates).

All the hats shown so far are in the plaza, yes.

Edit: Except that female miis cowboy hat apparently. I had forgotten about that one.

That one isn't a mii plaza hat?

I've been cross-referencing screenshots and it stands out to me that even stuff like the pink rim on the black top hat perfectly match street pass hats.

Well I tried looking into this stuff (albeit briefly) the other day and there are not many images of the new hats so it was kind of hard to check. All lists I found mentioned cowboy hat but I couldn't see anything that stuck out to indicate the flat one.

Of course I may have made a mistake.

Did anyone notice when they removed the newcomer banners from the site for the E3 characters? I only noticed it while looking at the site today. I hope this means we're getting a veteran reveal soon.

Why wouldn't Miis customization be based on past appearances? They probably reference the Mii Plaza hats, just like Mario can be Fire Mario and Samus can wear her Gravity Suit.

Just references to their own game appearances done through costumes. I don't think the Wii U has a way to unlock Mii hats anyway.

Also, only 2 months until Japan 3DS Release. Information is probably going to ramp up very soon, with only a short while left. Then release we'll see a massive dump of new info as the rest of the world waits through the longest month ever.

One month is nothing. Brawl didn't come out in PAL until June.

Captain Falcon Mii today lol.

Pic of the day. Just like in the original game, the Dark Emperor can cause status changes based on a fighter's color. Red types generally get powered up. On a different subject, the Mii Fighter is wearing a Mii Force Helmet.

Funny since I've discussed this update more than the other recent ones.

The black and red outlines still leave me curious. From previous information black is from free for all whereas red is from team battles so it is odd to see them together.

RE: Mario in PM
I mained him since Melee and consider him the forbidden main in PM. Dude's so cheese in PM. I don't think any of my other characters are consistent as him, but he is probably my least used character that I'm comfortable with in PM.

I want to get Sheik at that level, but man does she suck compared to everyone else in PM. They nerfed her recovery so much. Then there are other characters like Meta Knight and Ivysaur that I think I'm good with.

I'll catch glimpses of Evo, but the world cup and weekend, so it won't be my focus for the weekend.

That's interesting. I wonder how those characters would get different colors, so I presume that it would based on ratio of colors that they are wearing. Female Villager had mostly red, and Mii had mostly grey and black which resulted him to get black outline.

i hope sakurai's wrist or arm or hand is better

me too, me too.

...this is kinda a confusing update. So the Dark Emperor actually helps the fighters rather than hinder them like we expected? And he buffs players "Just like in the original game" (this never happened in Find Mii even slightly) based on their color? But "Red types generally get powered up", does that mean that there are different buffs for different color shades? How many buffs are there? How deep does this crazy Emperor-induced rabbit hole go?!
Count me among those confused by this.

I have played through Find Mii many times (for the record, the Dark Emperor appears at the end of Find Mii 2's Secret Quest) and he does not put status changes on your character. Actually, he does the opposite of that: he nullifies any status alterations. In Find Mii you can use magic from various colors to buff your character or to poison your opponent. If you try to use those spells in the fight with the Dark Emperor, an animation of rain appears and the status change gets 'washed away' before it can take effect.

Actually, he does do one thing like a status change: he reduces your Miis' level by one (unless they are already level 1). You can cancel this effect by buying a potion with 3DS play coins.

On another note, it would be pretty great if your Mii hats could transfer over from the Mii Plaza. I have virtually everyone and it would be pretty fun to use those with the Miis in the game.

They licensed the technology from Microsoft that powers the hover over active taskbar icon colours.

I'm wondering if we're overestimating Mii visual customization and what we've been shown is just an elaborate bunch of alternate colors like every other character (since Miis can't have traditional alternate colors). Like, maybe there isn't a hat adding menu, and these various costumes are just accessed like any other costume or color for any other character.

Or something really basic like clicking their head on the character select screen changes their hat and clicking their body changes their body. Clicking to change colors is already Smash functionality. They could probably just make you hold r or z on a controller while pushing the costume change button to change hats or something fairly basic for button based costume changes.

The website says:
Under custom parts you can also change your fighter's headgear and outfit.
To me that sounds like there is a special menu just for dressing them up.

We've also seen two different outfits with the purple top hat:

My JP 3DS just got a Megaman puzzle in puzzle swap.
It is peculiar to me how much Nintendo has been leveraging the Mega Man IP through eShop and their other services. I'd almost be curious if Nintendo pulled a Bayonetta 2-type deal with Capcom and is funding re-development of Legends 3.
