Pic of the day. For the first time ever, I present to you…the main menu for the 3DS version!! The icons are even animated. The design concept may look similar if you've played other games I've worked on. But we had a hard time making this one because…

The bottom screen displays pictures matching each mode! This was quite a task for the UI (User Interface) designers, but they made it happen. Kudos to them! You can tap the screen to look up additional info like how to play--complete with diagrams.

Nice. But that challenge box just seems out of place :/

The inconsistently large amount of white space in the centre makes my eyes bleed

In the spirit of generosity, I hope that he went back and realized his mistakes. Or at the very least, I hope he learned that Captain Falcon isn't from StarFox.
If he ever returns it should be wearing a "That Ain't Falco" shirt

The funny thing is, that all the icons are out of place in some way. The fonts are different for each shape (color, shadow, outline, stretched), the icons on the shapes are different (color, shadow, outline), the shapes forms don't follow any logic and the colors of the shapes are also different. There is a inner logic there, but they also look different from each other. ALMOST LIKE THERE PULLED FROM DIFFERENT GAMES ;)

Would be better and way more cooler if they actually used their respective series fonts.

You will take your pink rectangle and you will like it!
At least make the black outline bigger!

Nice :D

They showcased some at E3 in a quick hightlight reel video. This is probably where Homerun Contest will be.
Ah yes.

Gotta say I appreciate any 3DS game that also puts the time and battery somewhere on the screen, where no doubt the return to home menu button will be disabled a lot in game.

Is there no adventure type mode?

The closest thing is going to be Smash Run, at least in the 3ds version. You run around in a labyrinth fighting against grunts and getting items, then after a set time has to face a battle. It can be played by yourself with CPU opponents, and according to previous comments from Sakurai this mode is the fastest way to unlock content in the game.

That's great update, but I only have a beef with the menu is that I felt that Challenge was weirdly placed right there. Also it's only button that have symmetrical frames comparing to other buttons.

i have zero faith in the online mode. in fact, i pretend it doesn't even exist so i don't even think about it and get frustrated when it works like shit.
Well if the online sucks, I will have to stick with single player only. I am not buying the Wii U version and even then, I was never a big fan of local multi :(
Yea that mode doesn't interest me. Hope I don't need to play it to unlock stuff.
I think there will be multiple ways to unlock stuff. Smash Run will be one of those ways.

I'm guessing Street Pass will let you swap your customized amiibo fighter to random people you walk past so they can challenge them.

That's definitely a great idea. Don't think it will be the thing though, since 3DS amiibo compatibility isn't even coming till next year probably, and even then a minority of people will use them.

If you look at how KI:U used StreetPass functionality, I think it is safe to say you can exchange customization parts/equipment or the egg toss thing or whatever it was. I would check but I don't have the game with me at the moment.

Do you guys think it would be possible to combine equipment to make new equipment kind of like how KI:U let you combine weapons to get new weapons?

A lot of characters need the Melee version of their something back

This should be fun.

Mario needs his melee doc moveset
luigi needs his melee down air
peach needs her melee down smash...sakurai plz
Bowser got an overhaul so yeah lol
Link needs his melee speed
Shiek needs everything
Ganondorf needs his speed.
Falcon needs his knee
Yoshi's melee 64 down air
Marth needs his longer sword
Jigglypuff rest

That's all I can think of.

At the very least we can probably expect something like Melee's Adventure Mode to be back.

As far as that menu goes, I'm not a fan of it really. I didn't really like Brawl's either from an aesthetic standpoint but at least it followed some logic and things were laid out horizontally.

Here, the buttons almost seem placed randomly. I mean, Smash being the biggest button on the screen makes sense but the other things are placed in such odd spots. And then it doesn't help that the Challenges button doesn't match the shape of the other buttons. =\

Obviously I ain't mad at it but it doesn't look that great of a menu. Maybe the Wii U menu will look better (more screen space to work with and all).

It was the former.
I don't think it'd be that much of an addition to the game. In KI:U there were tons and tons of different weapons, with tons and tons and ... (ad infinitum) of special properties. The equipment possibilities seem rather limited if they only give a possible of two stat changes per object.

I'm mostly concerned about where the "staple" modes like Classic and All-Star are going to go. Are they Challenges? Under Games & More? Is there some other menu hidden out of sight for them? Did they just roll them into the Smash menu? Is this thing challenges?

So many questions!

That thing was the solo arcade mode, right?

Edit: It was called Classic mode >.<
