Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XI: Where 90% correct equals 100% wrong

Bill being so good was the surprise.
I remember seeing him play during the E3 stream with the rest of the treehouse. But I can't exactly recall if he was the best one there or not.

The release date for the 3DS is pushed back, the Wii U release date changed to "2015"

Surprise.
Now where did I leave that flipping table...

That was the least surprising thing that happened all afternoon.
I expected as good as E3.
Instead I got a mess.
Horizon is disappointed.

Are you seriously suggesting his name is based on Smash? Because of the word Brawl?

Are you seriously suggesting that it is some kind of wild stretch to see a "Brawl" username posting in an SSB thread (with an SSB avatar even) and assume it is SSB-based?

I'm sad we didn't get to see some cool Rosalina sandwich combos, though.

man the TAS videos with rosalina are going to be fucking ridiculous

I like items (although I generally play with them off), but man it grinds my gears when they have them turned on for these events. I just want to see how the characters work, but before you can deduce any patterns, some screen-clearing explosion interrupts the action. Eh.

At least this tournament had plenty of fights with items turned off.

Atlease there's this awesome exception!

We're probably getting at most 5 more characters before launch.

...Unless there's no unlockables.
Whynotboth?

Really, Sakurai dont like things being spoiled in the Internet..

He will probably show every character before the release, even if there are secret characters

Was that combo video any good? And is there anywhere to watch it yet?

It wasn't a combo video at all, it was an exhibition between Bill and some guy also from Nintendo (I think?) And they both kept trying to use the word "combo" for literally everything they did that was 1 or 2 hits. It was embarrassing. It was just them showing the game off some more than anything else. Not worth your time to watch it.

And, I'm not being a jerk or anything when I say that. It was just... a poor attempt at appealing to people who wanted to see something more from the game than the usual item stuff or whatever.

I can't figure out what happens here exactly?

What's the weird white/red lightning that pops out from the side of the screen and seems to knock Yoshi into Bowser?

The lightning is just to indicate that the hit was lethal or close to lethal. Yoshi just ran into the very end of the hitbox or something...

Maybe. His comments about SSE point in that direction, but Snackurai is very hard to predict.

The lightning effect happens whenever a heavy blow hits someone at a high %. Yoshi just does a dash attack that ends up being out-prioritized by Bowser's attack.

EDIT: Beaten by seconds.

On the other hand, it shows you how items work - think of how much we've learned about the Blue Shell and the Beetle from these streams. I like the way these tournaments have had items on in FFA and off in 1v1. With FFA, there's so much chaos going on anyway that it's hard to really see the finer points of the characters, so why not turn items on? Items are simpler, so it's easier to discern how they work in FFAs than the characters. Then, in 1v1, when you can get a good look at the characters themselves, the items are off. I think that's a good compromise.

Yeah, this is true. I concede you raise good points.

Yeah, it sucks. I really think people want to see the characters more, too and items get in the way of it all. But then again, I also think items "save" those matches from looking terrible as most players in the tournament just seemed to spam one move (aside from players like Westballz and Larry Lurr). So, there's that side to it too in a way.

In general items are bad from a spectator POV, honestly. Too many effects flying off around the screen and players getting KO'd without you realizing it if you don't watch everybody -- I couldn't even keep track of who KO'd who half the time or who was in the lead (obviously the second part of that is because of a lack of the second screen being streamed). FFA is already chaotic enough as it is but at least with items off you can track things better, they're similar enough to teams.

Even ignoring the finer points, the Smash invitational and now the Comic-Con tourney taught me that I can't follow FFA for shit. I try to focus on a single character, but it's still easy to lose track.

Um....YES? The username is simply "Brawl" and you can change your avatar to anything you want. You're jumping on him when you just assumed his username was Super Smash Brothers based.

I need to see people who appreciate Lucina

Does she have a dedicated thread on Smashboards? I'll dip my head in there until I remember why I can't stand Smashboards, and then I'll be back

To people complaining about items being on...you know they are selling this to people besides the 1v1 no items people right? Plus the FFA had items on and the finals did not, I'm pretty sure...but either way the point stands

I'm really glad she's in. I was hoping for her since they started showing characters.
