After noticing a lack of tournament-style stages, I felt like going through all of them and seeing how they might play out. I'd be very interested in feedback for what other players think. I'm assuming there's no boss toggle.

3DS Neutral
Battlefield
Final Destination
Tomodachi Life

3DS Counterpick
Arena Ferox (transformations)
Prism Tower (shifting/traveling stage; one formation has walkoffs, so it may be banned)
Reset Bomb (transformation)

3DS #Banned
Balloon Fight (fish hazard; depending on the hazard, this could be an interesting Counterpick)
Boxing Ring (walkoffs)
Find Mii (appears to have a boss or ghost hazard)
Gerudo Valley (walkoffs and damaging ice and fire hazards)
Jungle Japes (easy to camp small platforms with certain death below)
Living Room/Nintendogs (walkoffs and falling block hazards)
Rainbow Road (kart hazards)
Spirit Train (bomb train hazards and random shifting)
Tortimer Island (trees randomly grow bomb fruit and healing fruit)
3D Land (scrolling with hazards)
New Super Mario Bros 2 (scrolling with walkoffs)
Wily's Castle (Yellow Devil hazard)

Wii U Neutral
Battlefield
Final Destination
Garden of Hope
Town and City/Animal Crossing

Wii U Counterpick
Skyloft (shifting/traveling stage)
Windy Hill (curvature; potential windmill camping?)
Pilotwings (shifting platforms when moving plane to plane)

Wii U #Banned
Palutena's Temple (huge; can run away and camp)
Pyrosphere (Ridley boss)
Wily's Castle (Yellow Devil boss)
Boxing Ring (walkoffs)
Mario Galaxy (walkoffs)
Wii Fit Studio (walkoffs)

I like items (although I generally play with them off), but man it grinds my gears when they have them turned on for these events. I just want to see how the characters work, but before you can deduce any patterns, some screen-clearing explosion interrupts the action. Eh.

At least this tournament had plenty of fights with items turned off.

That's why I also don't play with items! They're so strong, it gets in the way of the characters being themselves.

I'll protect you!

Don't worry, I'm just kidding

It's really just me
Staring straight into our souls.

Did Anthony win
Let's just say if he picked Bowser he would've won.
both of our gaffers didn't win :(

I think Balloon Fight having a frigging wrap-around border is the biggest detriment in its tournament playability...I still don't understand how that's gonna play out? Guess you can only KO by falling into the water or off the top. Does the Pac-Maze have that too?

If you smash them around the sides they keep flying and wraparound. Eventually, your gravity would pull you into the water or you'd be set up for a combo to go off the top. I don't think that should be immediately banned unless the fish is completely random when it pulls people into the water. I'd say it should be a Counterpick until it's proven broken.

I forgot about Pac-Maze. Is that for Wii U or 3DS? Does it have hazards?

They havent revealed them yet, hell, they didnt even specifically say they were smash surprises, but just surprises in general.
edit:

Wait when was this?

1v1 matches....? Well okay.

They were in the middle of the tournament. Bill Trinen, Toph, Scar, and JC (treehouse guy) played a few matches and had some 1v1. They were pretty entertaining. Also, during a lot of the stream Toph and Scar were dropping some competitive Smash info for JC which was pretty good for anybody that doesn't follow it I thought.

Oh man I was super busy today, something that I missed?
Something relevant? I'm watching the archive but... is not the same

BOWSER TOO STRONK!

You know, I always wondered if Bowser/Ganondorf/Mewtwo being so weak in the games was some weird Nintendo-forced deal where they didn't want the villains being too strong and scaring the kids. Like, they needed to be threatening, but still beatable by the good guys.

C'mon, surely we'll be able to turn off boss hazards, right?

Hopefully.

If the Yellow Devil is any indication, bosses will be much more than simple stage hazards. I'm a fan of stage hazards in general, but the Yellow Devil is an all out intrusion. He appears far too frequently and lasts for too long. He's also pretty much unavoidable.

The Yellow Devil changes the dyanmic of the fight to the point to where it doesn't even feel like Smash, but rather a mini game out of Mario Party.

Avoid the Yellow Devil for as long as possible to outlast your opponents! Take a chance if you're brave and attack the Yellow Devil to try and win!

Wiley's Castle was actually avoided at my Best Buy event simply because of the Yellow Devil. The concern many players have is that there won't be an option to turn off stage bosses, which would "ruin" otherwise perfectly acceptable and unique stages.
