i know duck hunt is a big deal in the states and can understand why people would want representation for it but in japan wouldn't playable duck hunt dog be about equivalent to asking for playable hogan's alley criminal

like, hell, even in warioware i think hogan's alley shows up more often than duck hunt

Smash has a history of catering to the Japanese players with Marth/Roy in Melee and Lucas in Brawl. Sakurai has shown with Little Mac that he's willing to cater towards a western audience a bit this time around so I don't think Duck Hunt Dog would be totally unbelievable.

I've been thinking...

We've got a lot of characters where they can switch between Male and Female like WFT, Villager, and Robin.

What if the Ice Climbers are turned into the Ice Climber, with selectable Popo and Nana, if Sakurai ran into difficulty with them? Maybe buff 'em up in exchange, with a new Up-B (the Condor)?

I'd take that honestly. Never really got into the IC playstyle, but I like the characters.
All the Ice Climbers have going for them is the tandem gimmick, and Sakurai cited that as the primary reason for their inclusion in Melee. It's what makes them unique, and it justifies the presence of characters from such a minor IP. The Ice Climbers will be cut entirely before they're gutted like that.

HE BROKE A FULL SHIELD WITH ONE DOWN SPECIAL!?

WHHAAAAAAAAT!?

How in the world is any of it teasing at a playable character though? You realize that Ridley has probably been planned as a boss since the beginning, since it actually makes sense...

Because everything that's been "said" about Ridley so far has been incredibly ambiguous in a way that no other character de-confirmation has been.

Every single other possible playable character de-confirmation so far has been straight to the point, they all fit in with this quote:

Sakurai said:
I don't like it when a tweet or whatever leads to needless speculation getting spread around," he wrote. "For example, when I tweet about playing some game, some people immediately get the idea that that character is in the new Smash Bros. Then people fan the flames on it, people start to think it's really true, people get angry about it. Nobody benefits.

I can't see Sakurai saying this and then thinking to himself "I know, I'll dance around and tease the most wanted playable character since Melee as a stage boss, people will love it when I finally announce that!".

And even if he doesn't think that he's being ambiguous, he either would have just shown him already because it's no big deal or he would have noticed the amount of speculation that's going on and killed the rumor to stop people from getting their hopes up.

They actually "analysed" the shadow? Huh.

Someone compared his shadow to Bowser, DK and Pikachu's shadows on pyrosphere and came up with a possible range of sizes for Ridley based on the shadow and the brief glimpse of his tail we get, neither of the sizes are too big to be a playable character.

Anyone read the newest leaks from Smashboards?

>Dixie
>Shulk
>Chorus Men
>Ridley
>Bowser Jr (riding in the mini clown car, 7 koopa kid alts)
>Mewtwo
>Duck Hunt Dog

Mentions of Ice Climbers, Snake, Wolf and Lucas being cut. Maybe saved for DLC?

Sadly Dixie and Ridley are the only ones who have only been speculated on for what ever reason. Also aside from foul mouth guy, the others are reputable as far as I know. Oh and no one knows if these are all the rest of the newcomers.

It's worth a look that's for sure and I mean we are getting extremely close to launch, someone is bound to leak something. Still even the guys who leaked this stuff are saying take everything with a grain of salt since they didn't see everything for themselves.

EDIT: Wait can I even post the link? I forget how things work around here sometimes.
Guess I should log in and see what's going on.

God damn. Sounds like you work in the industry my friend or just research well enough...

I hope you weren't off put by my tone or post content, that wasn't my intent. I was just trying to logically explain the potential issues with your suggestion that's all.

I genuinely believe the NoA reps that were taking down feedback were actually noting it down and hopefully sending it to Sakurai, but I have no confidence in Sakurai as a developer to listen to feedback and instead just make the game he personally wants to make.

Sm4sh might be fixing a couple of problems with Brawl but for me personally it's hasn't been enough to repair the damage it caused to my opinion of him as a developer, hopefully the final release will change my mind but whenever I read comments he makes pertaining to the competitive community it's always knocks that hope down a peg or two.

I understand and can appreciate your disappointment if an entry in a beloved series is not to your liking. I just want you to keep in mind that you (& everybody with your exact viewpoint) are NOT the only source of feedback he is receiving and that a developer always has to decide what feedback they are to take to heart, which feedback they must deny, the reasons why and how that relates to the type of game they are trying to make. It's not an easy job and I don't envy Sakurai and his team. Hopefully the maximum number of audiences can be satisfied with this game :)

Takamaru is the only Amiibo worth buying. It can turn invisible, throw ninja stars, shoot lightning/fire/cause earthquakes.

I'm all for the inclusion of Ridley and others as playable bosses in the Wii U version. Pretty cool idea on Sakurai's behalf if it's true; it's the best fit in my mind for a playable Ridley. It would be pretty mean if he only ends up as a stage boss especially after all of this secrecy around him.

Wasn't ROB also only relevant to North Americans?

Sheik is only in the game due to the now removed transformation gimmick though...

If he did have two Ridleys in the game (He's not, either Other M ridley is going to be playable or he's going to be a boss).

Huh... did you already forget that Brawl had both Ridley and Meta-Ridley as bosses?

I know and understand this, I've already decided that if sm4sh continues in the same direction as Brawl compared to the rest of the series then I'm done with future Smash games because it's clearly not for me and if two games in a row are like that I can't see the direction changing back towards 64 and Melee.

Maybe stuff will be fixed in patches but I can't really factor that in to my opinion without confirmation on that, but my main concern with Smash 4 currently is the longevity of the game, which I'm imagining is only going to be slightly longer than Brawl, which is just disappointing when you wait so long for something.

He was used as a trojan horse here and is probably best known in the west for "saving" the market, but it's not like he was some totally unheard of peripheral in Japan either. He got referenced in a bunch of Japanese games and Brawl made his default scheme the Famicom Robot instead of R.O.B. as well.

I already have an invisible Takamaru amiibo.

Interestingly, Larry Lurr (the 3DS tourney winner) said the game played like 64.

what if Robin and Lucina are the last additions to the game regarding newcomers?

and that they don't even announce veterans because they want to have them as unblockeables?

I wonder how people would react

So, like Brawl's unlockabe/default division, but even worse? I think you'd just need to go back and look at the reactions to the confirmation of Brawl's line up.

Sheik was always treated as a standalone character, though. She never appeared together with Zelda in-game, and she always had her own HUD name/celebration/etc. Popo and Nana combine to form the character called "Ice Climbers" -- cutting Nana would be like cutting the Luma from Rosalina.

We're at least guaranteed a Rhythm Heaven character thanks to the Sneaky Spirit's presence, so that's 1 more newcomer minimum.

Interestingly, Larry Lurr (the 3DS tourney winner) said the game played like 64.

I have noticed that the game does have a lot of callbacks to 64 in terms of mechanics, visuals and music, but 64 was very offense oriented, with probably the worst shielding mechanics in the series whereas the new game is quite the opposite.

64 also had L/Z-cancelling that completely removed landing lag and a lot of very long (relative to the series) combos in the game, which I don't see sm4sh having.

The game plays like 64 in that it's average speed, has no momentum conservation and has high knockback throws, but it's still falling short of a few things (which were the most important things for me).

I wouldn't go as far as guaranteed, but it does seem somewhat likely.

Find Mii gets represented as its own universe with its own enemies in Smash Run too, and while you can probably make the case that it's tied to Miis it's still a unique series with Smash Run reps. Rhythm Heaven might just be a set of stages and trophy/item content, kinda like Animal Crossing in Brawl.

No way. They would have chilled out on the character reveals if that were the case.

Also the fact that he said they were "nearing" the end of the newcomer videos, not that they'd reached it yet, so it's a pretty pointless hypothetical.

I'd be supremely disappointed with the amount of newcomers if that was true anyway.

Banjo and Kazooie, Battletoads, Killer Instinct, Jetpac, Diddy Kong Racing Characters and Jet Force Gemini might have all been in smash in some way by now if Nintendo never lost Rare.

Playable Characters, Trophies, Assists, Stages... All gone just like that.

Worst part is? Nintendo technically should've had the rights to Rare's IPs when they left. Apparently, blame Howard Lincoln for letting Rare keep those IPs for free out of courtesy to the Stamper Brothers, and blame Hiroshi Yamauchi for being bitter and letting it happen (Melee was also supposed to have trophies for every Rare IP and Grant Kirkhope back as DK's VA, too, but that was also likely Yamauchi & company's doing). Incidentally, the only one of those guys still working in the industry right now is Kirkhope, but it's too late to fix things now.

Granted, with how many IPs Nintendo has to attend to right now, all of those Rare franchises barring Banjo-Kazooie would likely be dead and buried next to F-Zero right now anyway, and it would've had to have been given to someone else, so the series would've been given to, say, Retro right before Metroid Prime, or HAL back when they were pondering where to go next with Kirby, likely putting these franchises in the same purgatorial void BKis in today.. Still, having Orchid or Rash playable or a Conker stage would've been great!

How many were you expecting? We have 11 so far.

I think it's weird Sakurai hyped up bosses in the smash direct, and has so far still only officially confirmed Yellow Devil, leaving the find mii final boss in a weird limbo where we're still not sure if he's just a background hazard or a boss (powers up the player what?), and Ridley who was clearly teased but continues to not be shown.

I would agree with this if it somehow wasn't possible to please both sides. However, it is very easy to please both and clearly Sakurai doesn't care enough about one side to do that. Also this point is brought up literally every time this subject rear it's head. I think everyone here understands where his priorities are.

Really hoping that the Duck Hunt Dog and Bowser Jr leak is legit. Give me two characters I want, Samurai. Give me~ ლ(╹◡╹ლ)

Oh, well who do you want that isn't in yet?

K. Rool, Ridley, Isaac, Ray Mk2, Rhythm Heaven Rep, Sukapon, NES Sports Rep, Mach Rider, ExciteBiker, Sami/Andy, Duck Hunt Dog, Mike Jones, Detective Club girl and Bubbles would all be higher on my list than Palutena, Miis, Lucina, Robin and Rosalina.

I generally sway towards older characters, villains and characters whose franchise has no representation, so Palutena, Rosalina, Robin and Lucina are lost on me, whereas I can see why Mii's were included, but I still hate their design and don't think they fit in smash.

Here are my updated roster predictions/expectations:

26mN4k.png

Takamaru being disconfirmed really threw me off... I replaced him with Dixie Kong (while it may be a long shot, after getting two Fire Emblem newcomers I believe there's a chance we may get both Dixie Kong and King K. Rool), but I'm not feeling very confident now about any newcomers other than Shulk and Chorus Kids. I'm also starting to worry about Mewtwo's chances of returning, and some other Brawl veterans, too. But this is my optimistic roster. Take away six characters (Dixie Kong, King K. Rool, Ridley, Mewtwo, Lucas, and Snake, specifically) and you have my absolute minimum expectation roster. Anything between that and the above roster is what I expect now.
